Honestly, I could see something like this happening in history quite often. There are all kinds of insane stories in the pages of history. Some stranger than fiction. Also, there are amazing rivalries in war. If you need an example, look into Hannibal and Scipio Africanus. Particularly, research Scipio's obsession with Hannibals tactics and their final conversation after Hannibals defeat.
