My pleasure! Sorry you had to wait 8 minutes to hear the shoutout. Big fan of you podcast as you might've concluded from the video. Will be taking more inspiration from those stories so more shoutouts to come.
Question for you two gentlemen of swimming! At what point do individual modifications to standard strokes become "illegal" by Olympic standards? Are these rules for strokes different by Paralympic standards? How far can pros push this? I ask because my favorite stroke is a hybrid one: free arms with a fly kick on each arm stroke. Powerful. Other than that in regular free my legs always just kinda "Ledecky". (I competed summers all strokes/formats as a kid-teen 8-18, so I've had plenty of coaching and time to sc around lol) Not that I'm at all competing any more! I'm 60 now just enjoying the hell out of being back to the pool, analyzing my strokes and curious... Would my stroke be illegal in freestyle competition?
@@andreawallenberger2668 I believe the only ways to get disqualified in freestyle is 1. A false start 2. Staying underwater past the (usually) red laneline markers 3. Pushing off the bottom of the pool 4. Pulling on a laneline and 5. Not touching the wall on a turn. In a freestyle event, you can do any stroke you want, but the “frontcrawl” is what everyone does because it is the fastest
The idea of letting your body choose what technique for you was a GAME CHANGER FOR ME! I spent so long using play book swim techniques that didn't make me feel comfortable but switching things up with A LOT of practice made the difference.
2:15 this is what makes a great coach. it's why people like dirk nowinski became great. because the coach didn't say "you're 7', you can't shoot 3s." instead, he let his athlete be himself. bad coaches, like the ones i had, try to mold athletes into "traditional" roles and techniques
As a former swimmer. Trying to improve during those times was one of the most frustrating things I've ever done (and I'm now 30 yo). Each coach had a different technique. Each athlete had a different opinion.
At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Klim set a world record (48.18) leading off the 4×100 m freestyle relay. Micheal Klim was a straight arm freestyler. Pretty sure he trained with Alexander Popov at the AIS.
Just amazing video I have noticed that around 2007 / 08 people started swimming with straight arms. Not only Busquet and Cielo as mentioned here, but same thing started at the same time around the world: sweedish Steffan Nystrand and the aussies, specially with Aemon Sullivan. South African Schoeman and the other french Alain Bernard did the same. Cool video
Wow! I didn’t know this story. It’s a good one! Thanks for sharing it! I swam with a guy who went on to swim for Auburn. He was the best swimmer I ever had the privilege of swimming next to even though it was only for a year. His first 50 of big practice sets was faster than my fastest 50 ever. 😳
Hi there. Greetings from Brazil. And how about the 2008 olympic 4x100 freestyle relay video? Have u done it? Thats the most amazing, incredible and outstanding relay event i have seen in my entire life. It may be the most exciting one in all history. Thanks in advance
I don't understand anything about swimming (so you are right for sure about the "new" technique) but I remember Roma 2009, it can't be a coincidence who every race was a WR (someone still resists today) and that the polyurethane supersuits are removed after that world championship (sorry for my "eng"). In short; you're sure polyurethane supersuits didn't help break down the 21sec barrier more than the technique?
arm speed under water has to be equal or faster than body speed ,if you don t want to create an eccentric contraction and excessive load on the shoulders muscles and tendons, same as speed kayak stroke
Thank you im liking swimming again. Have u reviewed the form smart goggles? I sorted out nasal polyps with nasal spray and I sleep a lot better now so im confident in recovery between swim session once pool opens.
The coach probably used "You will break the 21 second barrier" in his introduction. Like "Hey. Nice to meet you. You will break the 21 second barrier."
Any good coach knows that the same 'cookie cutter' techniques don't work for every one they coach. We are all different, and some of us are more different than others. One of the reasons I like Raul, is that he encourages you to try different things rather than cookie cutters. This sets him apart from other swim channels.
I really love how you make your videos. If you don't me asking...which video editing software do you use, and where do you source your music/sound effects from? I'm thinking of growing my channel.
I’m new to your channel. I don’t know if there’s already a video about crossing legs kick. When I used to swim, I would do the kick sometimes crossing my legs. I knew back then that it wasn’t optimal, but it felt more natural to me, less tiring and I was also faster while doing it.
Things go in cycles...you need the luck of genetics, perseverance, and training to all align at the right time...the good thing about history (and also the bad) is that it repeats.
Hi man, but doesnt the use of supersuit somehow jeoperdize their achievements? Biedermann record should also be ignored, with all the respects to him and Cielo but mostly - respect to all swimmers now who try to do it the right way :)
But something important to note that regardless of technique, the super suits they wore were directly responsible for shaving off the extra time needed to break those particular time records.

For every coach capable of thinking outside the box, there are 10 conventional, uninspired coaches. I recall very vividly a day in swim practice at the YMCA (very informal group, we did not compete at meets) we had a race from one of the pool to the other. Those documentary-style videos where you combine historical facts with technique analysis are extremely nice to watch.
VAI BRASIL!!
Cesar Cielo was a swimming superstar for Brazil. Glad he entered in History

Fantástico! muito obrigado por compartilhar a história do grande Cesar Cielo! Orgulho nacional!
... MANY UNKNOWN SUPER HUMANS ARE NOW BEING VEIWED ALL OVER THE WORLD AND MAYBE AT THE SAME TIME .MMmmm.?..
you really made swimming more enjoyable.
Awesome !
A hug from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Great video!! These kind of videos on the story of swimming is a great complement to the usual technique videos. Keep on it, we appreciate!!
Thanks! Will do!
Dam, this video is better than what Olympic post on their channel
Cool music, like watching a short movie🎥makes the atmosphere complete.
Thanks man, Cielo is our star of swimming.

So what is the status of these records since the hydrophobic speed suits were banned in 2009? Everyones times dropped considerably.
The records are still legal. Most of them have been broken with textile suits.

Very good advices, I swam long time at the university, any coach gave us advices like and informations like this., Thank you man
4:45 why is there a transparent blue shirt floating over that guy's white "France" shirt (on the right)?
Hearing about Frederick's story and how he started at 14 gives me much more hopes and motivation because I started at 12.
