  • In this video i am going to show you how to convert fixed voltage adapter to variable power supply.

    Nice explanation, but one warning is missing: Check the voltage of the output capacitor. When you cross them, you can be sure that one day it will explode.
    OT: The TL431 can replace the zener voltage control.
    OT2: If there is no zener diode / TL431 on the secondary side of the power supply, then maybe you've hit the treasure. In my case there was the TSM101AC (sop-8) chip. After looking at the datasheet, I found that there is also a possibility to regulate the current.

      mine has a TSM101AC with 817 optocoupler. but i stiil can't figure it out to make it adjustable. Do you have a video for that?

      @@danniananta199 Sorry, no video. But look into datasheet on page 10 (EVALUATION BOARD - TECHNICAL NOTE) - there is all explanation.
      You need replace R6&R7 (high precision, more digits on it) "Middle" point is connected to 7 leg of TSM101AC. Fot R6 I'm use 720Ohm, and for R7 2,75kOhm shift + 20k potentiometr.

    Set it to 4 volts and connect a load. You will see that it doesn't work. The IC on the primary side has UVLO (undervoltage-lockout) protection. When you set the voltage below 14 volts, it switches to integrated protection.

      1.2 v very low to operate the TL431 ic. U can use my other power supply that will work 0-18v when u give 18v from this type adapter

    I tried opening two laptop chargers but could not find TL321 transistor. Useful video if you are lucky to have TL321 but most of the circuits doesn't have one. It would be better if you can mention the adaptor model and make.

      But this is not possible.
      Power supplies designed for a certain fixed voltage value can work well with very close values but certainly not as distant as in this case.
      If it's a PSU designed for 18v and 2A It won't be able to deliver the same power at 8V and at 36v, as, someone write here, at 36 you will blow the output capacitor which will not be at the proper voltage and other problem of switching at 8v or lower..
      The switching power supplies capable of going from a few volts to 30 volts are designed taking into account this need and have adequately sized components, certainly more expensive and bulky components because they are suitable for situations in the two extreme limits

    Checking voltage alone isn't enough!
    You must connect a load test and show us the CURRENT it can supply at various voltages!

      Regulation & amp controlled by primary side, lm431 is like a variable zener to feed back primary though optocoupler.
      It gives variable regulated full amps.

    This looks like a very cheap quality circuit. I had an extra charger (Dell) that is very complex and also they have added lot of thermal adhesive on the components that makes it difficult to modify.
