The fourteenth-century London Codex contains an important Italian collection of songs and dance pieces from the same period. It has nothing English besides the name, due to its location as in 1876 the manuscript was purchased by the British Museum. Its sheets are in parchment while the cover is in very thick leather; on the back, made of wood, there is engraved in gold the inscription: "Madrigali, Ballate e Mottetti posti in Musica” (Madrigals, Ballades and Motets set to Music).
On the first sheet stands the coat of arms of the Medici family, who bought it in the 15th century. 88 sheets in total plus a few pages dating back to the following centuries. Inside there are compositions by Francesco Landini, Jacopo from Bologna, Bartolino from Padua, Lorenzo from Florence, Niccolò from Perugia, Vincenzo from Rimini, Donato da Cascia, Gherardello from Florence and Antonio Zacara from Teramo. The codex also contains some of the most beautiful and famous medieval dances: the 8 istanpitte: Ghaetta, Chominciamento di Gioia, Isabella, Tre Fontane, Parlamento, Belicha, In Pro and Principio di Virtù; 4 saltarelli, 1 trotto, 4 chançonete tedesche, La Mandredina and the famous Lamento di Tristano. The structures of the istampitte are similar to the oldest French instrumental dances called estampie, for example those contained in the Chansonnier du Roi.
"Estampie - Istanpitta, Instrumentalmusik des Mittelalters" was recorded in 1974 under the direction of the unmatched Thomas Binkley. Those who follow this channel know my opinion on Thomas Binkley, pioneer of Medieval Music, and also in this recording his artistic choices have made school.
About the video, I selected many images from the "Tacuinum Sanitatis" made in Lombardy by Giovannino de Grassi. In these splendid and detailed images, there are scenes of common life of the fourteenth century in Northern Italy, the same place and time of the istanpitte presented here.
I wish you happy listening!

Fantastic. This is one of the best channels on RUclips.
Thank you! 🌻
Congratulazioni i brani sono fantastici 🖤
Saltarello is an unbelievable piece of art.
For 30 years i believed nothing could surpass classical music. Now this channel has become my favourite, and medieval music my favourite music. 😁
The Maestro strikes again! Saving this for Saturday morning while sipping on an espresso.
Are you married?
wish i could speak Italian, love Italy but, well, anyway.
So just start to study it, if you want you can.
A good start is to check all English words of Latin origin, it helps a lot.
@@pierocavolino1057 oh cool thanks I will try and do that. I got an app too so finally doing it but need to keep Bible first :). A lot of English words are similar too
@@PaulA-os9pb I write a sample.
mano 'hand', hence Eng. Manager
piede 'foot', hence Eng. pedestrian
dente 'tooth', hence Eng. dentist
capo 'boss, head', hence Eng. Capital, cape, chapter.
At a glance, it might seems not, but if you think for a minute or so; it is not difficult.
@@pierocavolino1057 thanks so much!
I am studying for a final on Dante and needed this, thank you.
💖Magnificent!! Greetings from 🇲🇽
This was one of the first full albums that I heard back in the nineties in a radio station here in Chile. I swear that I didn't heard this in more than twelve years! Thanks for sharing this masterpiece!
Grato👏👍
Love the Cat at 19:18. At first I thought it was a monkey, but the striped tail speaks of 'Cat.' Cats have been around for a while, yah. Great illustrations!! Thank you!.
The expression of that sheep/goat/whatever at 14 minutes! 😂
😆
😃🌈🎶🎶Hermosa música!Adoro la Época Medieval!🤗❤️ Imágenes preciosas! ✨ Bravo!!👏🎶🎶🌈😃
Are you 7?
Ph. Coisy
Beautiful! I just discoverd this channel before Xmas time. :) Great atmosphere for dinner time and during the day also.
i love most music from this era, but the instrumental music on period instruments is my favorite. thanks for the upload, and please keep it coming!
Great illustration, absolutely
As always - such great information and artwork to motivate and inspire us =----> =----> =---->

I just wish these guys had done a version of Popeye the Sailor Man in this style. It would have been a hit! ;)
One can clearly hear Arabic influence on the music. I'd have thought that the music dates from the 13th century.
@@messertancredi4364 Come no ? Nessuna influenza araba ! Soprattutto in Sicilia !
From minute 10:00 - she's making pasta? Already in the 14th C?
Probably, pasta and dumplings have been around in different areas of the peninsula at least since the 12th century, possibly even since the Iron Age
Pasta in Italy was already eaten in the central southern area. in Etruria and Magna Graecia. More than 2000 years ago.
15:23 sounds Eastern.
I dont care about the music but the pictures of Giovannino de Grassi
Pizza pizza
I hate whenever people dismiss medieval people as backwards idiots. They were in many ways more creative and intelligent than us

Almost sound like turkish ottoman song
Musica con radici arabe orientali
Yes, I'm Malayo-Indonesian, and I immediately heard the Arabic roots of the music.
