As always, interesting, and truly, just brilliant. There is an engineering speak that resonates, NVH, load paths, etc., but also the depth of knowledge of each car ex-factory, that continues to surprise me.
Probably one of the best YT channels I have seen. As a retired aerospace Design Engr. of 40 odd years, it is so refreshing to watch the application of proper metalwork skills, and hear offhand comments that display detailed materials and tooling knowledge; plus the use of 3D printing, and all the CAD and scanning work, its a delight!
Your videos are real, honest, funny, and educational. Keep at it.
I sincerely hope your business is generating the money to support the passion and effort you show. You deserve to do more than just ok at this. I don't think I have ever seen this knowledge, skill, and passion, applied or managed with such humility and commitment in one place. I'm running out of superlatives... lol. I will make visit you some day, if only to shake your hands, and maybe see some of the iconic cars you create. (Personal fav. is Churchill, that's what an XJC of the early 60s would be...). Thank you for being what you are.
Very kind words, and much appreciated. Cal.
@@retropowercars not about kindness, its about smart guys with proper engineering knowledge creating beautiful cars. Not one other custom, hotrod, whatever moniker you choose, gets close to what you do. Keep on climbing. Know that you are special and unique.
I love how Bobby prefaces everything with: "it's actually very simple"...and proceeds to explain something that's so difficult and complex that my head is about to explode. Master of his craft 🙌
Bobbi's skill and enthusiasm is really starting to come through, there can't be that many people with such a combination around
The leatherwork stuff is fascinating, Richard looks like he's been practicing for a shot at TV for years, what a natural.
Love Marc’s sense of humour as it adds some interesting dynamic to the team videos. 🫶🏻🏁 watching here from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you 😜
Bobbi’s English gets more eloquent every week, he must be listening to Mark 🤣😂🤣😂
Bobby is amazing. Skill level in that shop is incredible
Firstly, haha, I was like: "That guys profile pic looks like that bloke that was in Corrie.." (That REALLY resembled my old man, back in the day...) and then I read your username !! - Anyway, Bobby is great and 'kudos' to him using English so well to tell us the great things he does - I'd be lost if it was in Spanish / Northern Irish !
@aobdesigned3881 yes it's jim mcdonald so it is.
I said after he reviewed Project Vader (and I guess Gordon’s Escort too), that you ought to get Jonny Smith to review all your finished cars for his Late Brake Show channel.
Well....
@@retropowercars How to say loads by saying very little! Giddy with anticipation now!
As long as it’s a review and in no way a judgement, as I believe the re-engineered Retropower cars are both unique and arguably many levels of quality above the cars that they originate from..
That's a great idea Johnny's mum
@@red00eye Shhhhhh, I’m undercover
The Late Brake Show with Johnny or Harry's Garage would be just the guys do these cars justice. I've been thinking for ages now that you should partner up with either Johnny or Harry for final road tests and features. They both share your profesionality and enthuisiasm for special cars 100%.
I would like to hear Harry's opinions on some of these cars
“Wanged a bit of metal in the space !” Love it!
This is always the greatest way to end the weekend. Keep up the fantastic work gents.
I’d love to see Henry Catchpole review the mk1
Ha ha Literally came here to say this.
A Retro car series by Henry would be fabulous 😊
If these boys were building moon rockets we’d all be up there enjoying fully inclusive space holidays by now! 😁🤣👍
So cool to see more of the guys presenting their work, enjoyed the interior stuff, the door cards etc.
Always a good Sunday afternoon to watch craftsmen at their best
"Polished car video's" Ooo please let it be Henry Catchpole. 😁
Another really good video guy's keep up the great work!
More fascinating content. Individual contributions from the various specialists is especially insightful. The addition of an upholstery craftsman is an added bonus.
Good to see your upholsterer has diplomatic immunity!
ha ha ha I was thinking that too....
Really enjoy your content. I like how you let the guys chat about their work and I always learn something new. I particularly enjoyed the trimming content by Richard. It's the details that make all the difference 👍
Another amazing update. Always the highlight of my Sunday!
Question(S) for Nat when the next (eagerly anticipated I might add!) Q&A segment happens. All to do with Carbon Fibre panels and the bonding, rust proofing, and finishing process.
- Your dedication to rust proofing is incredible! So I'm sure you've given this a lot of thought: How do you ensure the bonded carbon panel joints are as corrosion proof as the rest of the build? Are you epoxy priming and seam sealing these? Raptor? It can't be as simple as just gluing the panel on...
- You alluded to not wanting to do a carbon roof on the Audi - and the question relates to that car but also the other builds, with the different (albeit slight) thermal expansion rates of steel vs. carbon, how do you finish the outer surface of the joints, or will you always avoid doing a carbon on steel joint in a visible area, and limit it to perimeter bonding as on the Allegro quarters?
I do look forward to a long and rambling tangent on this :). It seems this is a somewhat new frontier and the number of finished projects in the wild are relatively few, and relatively new.
Thanks and all the best!!!
As with many commenters, I really enjoyed Bobby’s contribution, but for Gawd’s sake, do something about the workshop moth infestation and give him a new shirt while you’re at it 😄
Aaaah back to normal now can relax and watch something worth watching 😊
In my saved pictures folder there are some renderings of a Rover P6B Coupe. I really need to win the lottery so I can commission RetroPower to build it for me.
Really loving the level of skill, knowledge, and enthusiasm shown by all of the team in these videos now too.
Churchill's colour is fabulous! - compared to the Mustang and the E-Type, bizarrely, the blue of Churchill has a hint of contemporary but yet still looks thoroughly in period - spot on!
My suggestion for someone to make a highly-polished video of the car being driven would be to get Chris Harris to throw these things around Anglesea. I know your budget doesn't extend to actual media personalities, I'm looking forwards to who it ends up being though! (maybe Richard Brunning? He's a pretty dab hand behind the wheel!)
Thanks for the update guys. Richard certainly is a great addition to the already outstanding team you have there.
I always learn something from your updates and upholstery tips were somewhat lacking. Not any more.
Bobby is such a star!! Love what you do 😊
You evidently put a lot of time and work into your recruitment. The talent you hire only add to the strength of your company. My old boss always ensured that not only were the new guys of the right ability, but more importantly that they were the right 'fit' for the team as a whole, to retain the right team dynamic. It seems you take a similar approach.
'Ooold aaaat ya 'aaand!
Haha, brilliant episode as always!
Looks like that audi is trying to steam-clean the bonnet sound deadening 😆
And when it’s oil 🤣
@@Retropower_Marc Oooh, so its applying the non-stick coating on this one? 😆
The colour on Churchill - gorgeous.
Absolutely my favourite!
Sunday night back on track ☕️in hand feet up catching up with what’s been done this week 🙏🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
You seem to have the midas touch with hiring! Just when I think you can't possibly get anyone better you do. For example, the new upholstery dude is unreal!
Capital episode.
Love this channel/content SO MUCH !!
The Jag doors are definitely a challenge, apart from the design and fabrication of the mechanisms, you also have many more issues to consider in final operation, like weight of glass and other door components, and also when the door is opened if the car is unlevel - one side will struggle to open while the other side will fly open. Interesting.
The A/C ductwork on the Jensen looks like a nightmare hallucination suffered by a urologist.
The interceptor's front looks so good without the bumpers.
Quite cool to hear Richard and his unmistakable South African accent. A bit of full loop happening thanks to the internet, I was born in Nuneaton in 1978 and have been living in South African since 1980. And now Retro Power from Hinckley (5 miles away) has a South African working for them. Ok now I write it out, it does sound like quite a stretch.
Afternoon, great content. I’ve sent you a message on your fb page with regards to the videographer 👍🏻
Class! Sheer class!
Good old bobbi...well explained 👍
as always brilliant, great team you guys have there
Do you still know which Allegro is which?
Ned, it sounds like one more bit coming under RP's roof. I worked in a factory for a time that make auto AC lines and air lines for OTR trucks- and most of the long hard tubes were bent with specialty benders, some with high production numbers would need a "bending jig" built (my job) to bend the tubing to, then swaging tools to create the flares and tubing ends. These were then assembled into more complicated assy's using a table sized jig, then crimped with special dies and sir powered power frames. It sounds like a lot, but proto typing and small runs were difficult set ups but once the set up was done, the execution was simple.
Cal, I am increasingly glad I asked about GWS- it definitely shows the huge complexities of what you do, and adding another large area like inventory for separate cars would be stunning. From what I think I am seeing, you could likely even generate tram measuring points for collision work on one of your finished cars. When the Algorithm brought you to my screen about Episode 60, your shop was already turning out great; to this date you have continued to do even more awesome builds. You are already doing more within your shop than many others do.
Yes, 'lead time' can be a killer when working on prototype parts.
Sorry if it's been mentioned before but were there any factory Hemi's produced by Jensen? There were 440 Six Pack's I believe. I hear that the 68' Hemi Charger (OEM TorRed) gifted to a Jensen executive back in the day has been sold privately.
They are still a gorgeous looking car even after all these years
Churchill really is a beautiful colour
you've never done anything about Kaiser one keep seeing it in the background looking awesome
can you do a walk around of it
thanks russ
Richie for PM 🤘
amazing work u guys. I work at b g penny and work on some of the car parts u brings in 👍. keep up the brilliant work
I really like watching the progress on the E Type, having owned and raced them
Eyebrows, helping engineers and farmers solve the worlds problems, since 18th century. @9:12
Love the content. Can hear Richard is from south africa...
You think so???
I wish I could win the lottery to give these guys (don`t laugh) a Ford Capri, that`s my boyhood dream car & these are the guys I`d give it to! If they`re good enough for Gordon Murray!
Mk1 with a Duck tail ?
Excellent work as usual boys😊
If the drain tube tends to block on the XJC would it be beneficial to remake it in a slightly larger diameter tube?
32:55 Johnny Smith I think will good fit Cal!!
Hi guys, I'm really loving your builds, truly awesome. Got a couple of questions for you, first one how's grass track mini coming on? Secondly do all your builds have to be checked /inspected once your finished and do they keep original plates? The reason I ask is because in NZ we have to go through a certification process, which costs thousands depending on the level of mods, scratch built is now over 16k to get it through cert, they have similar process in Aus, but over there it has to be signed of by an engineer, when this was introduced it killed the kit car industry almost overnight. Anyway had my rant, keep up the good work, cheers Marty
Hi Cal I would like to hear your take is on what DVLA are proposing on restored, modified classic cars.
Who waffles more. ?
Bobby or Nat. ?
Engineering porn. Fabulous work. Mind blowing. Did I hear Nat saying he's been at the machinery auctions again?
Aston Martin use an "infinate stop" strut on their doors too (Vantage V8, probably others too). It feels like it has a break inside that's released by motion. As you say no space! Always a problem!
What about chopped strand spraying for your in-house fibreglass parts
last weeks dinner didnt taste right due to the lack of Retropowers video, not to worry
Whats with the green 240z behind Bobby!?
You missed something important in the cad cave. Who's puppy?
I hope Mark is wearing a mask when he's mixing paint and thinners ?? Painters tend to be a very happy bunch from fumes around the workshop :)
Hope your e type doors will have better safety against trapping body parts than the tesla cybertruck frunk. I see that Bobby realises that there are potential threats so thats great.
That green Datsun shell on the mezzanine - I've been seeing it in the background of videos pretty much since the start, if I recall correctly. Whose is it, and when is it getting a Ferrari 575 V12 in it?
Can I recommend ' Duck hunt ' on the NES , for all duck issues!
11:35 Perhaps weld a thicker tube on so there's less of a chance than before for it to get clogged. More work. But good solution I think. Just a viewer.
If you're on about Johnny Smith doing videos, I'll bet he'll be gutted when you finish an alegro.
May as well made that escort exhaust yourselves by the time its been chopped about. As nice as those simpson systems are they aren't suited to a road car that needs some refinement.
I went through the same with my escort but with a piper system. Added a flexi, centre silencer, had the rear box made re packable and re made the hangers to isolate the exhaust.
I’d almost forgotten about the carbon fibre CV8 project. (Will that car be returning?)
Was praying for an S4 burnout
At 2:49 it shows light fittings from the inside labeled "outer right" and "inner right" Surely they are round the wrong way?
Time to sort your router dust extraction!
😂 well sold A4, will you be able to dial out the understeer?
When you unpick bits (like on the jag bumper mounts) - do you spot sand blast inside to get a clearer picture? Or how do you clean things up - just wire wheels?
Richard a fellow South African
Seeing you make aluminium sheet wheel arch liners for the Jensen made me wonder, how do you avoid electrolytic corrosion betwern two metals in a place that gets drenched with muddy water?
Those paint fumes, eh? 😄
How do you keep track of which bodyshell & parts are Allegro 1 & which are Allegro 2?
Magic 😂
What’s the green car up on the mezzanine behind Bobby?
😂 Mark, is a fantastic car salesman, "oh it's just a scratch, it'll buff out perfik".
I'm wondering, is his surname Daley, by any chance?
Perhaps son of Arthur Daley?
🤣🤣
Mad Mark's manky marques.
Bobby - I think you need a new T-shirt, mate. Looks like you’ve got nipples of steel 😂
I thought they were about to scan his torso
I might have missed it in earlier videos, but I don't recall an explanation of why you're bring upholstery in-house and not outsourcing to Trimworks these days?
I think it's so they can have a smoother more integrated design workflow in house. In a word teamwork.
Correct
What do you think of the new TWR Jaguar XJS that's been designed by magnus walker and Kyzal?
NIce Mike Brewer p1ss-take 😆
What happened to Bobby's left arm?
41:30 Forgot to hide some of the future projects. Whoops
like 365 !
Where in South Africa are you from Richard?
Grew up in Middelburg Mpumalanga lived in Hartbeespoort while working in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Why couldn't you just use a carbon nylon 3d print instead of glassfibre?
For your trackback partner get a couple of young blokes in skinny jeans with backwards baseball caps who say 'Yo!' a lot. Chicken dinner!
Nat, Cal, I am guessing you got into the business because you are true petrolheads, but as the old saying goes, once you make a business out of a hobby, you soon realise you are actually doing management/admin tasks 99% of the time (ok, it's not an old saying, I just made it up). How much do you two actually get to work on the cars yourselves?
The E Type. Will be epic in deep purple with orange interior and mini lites ❤
I challenge you and your staff to create a video without using the word BASICALLY it's not needed.
Basically, i could never achieve that.
Basically correct
Pigeon excrement repairs🤣
I'm struggling to understand what Bobby is saying, even the subtitles are struggling
I have no problem
@@fraserwright9482 Same here, get what he's saying straight off.
So, what are you suggesting? 🤔
Mark is a real character isn’t he? I bet he never hangs back if there’s a free bar! …😁🍺
He speaks perfectly well. Clear and informative.
