Please do just the tiniest bit of research. My wife is a special ed teacher and she told me this is a standard practice at most schools around the country. If a parent wants to bring an “advocate” to an IEP meeting, the principal is required to have their own IEP expert at the meeting. Additionally, in most school districts, the parents are required to notify the school ahead of time if they are bringing an advocate to a meeting. Seems pretty reasonable to me in today’s litigious society where schools get sued for giving someone a bad grade. In this case it looks like the parents showed up with an unannounced advocate, the principal notified them of the policy, and then they went crying to the news claiming that the principal refused to meet with them. No mention of what the policy says or whether the school offered to reschedule when someone from central office was available. The principal probably resigned because the school district caved into this parent and scolded the principal for trying to enforce their own policy. In today’s society, where parents scream and yell and even sue teachers for giving their kids a bad test score, I don’t blame the principal at all for wanting someone from central office there.

The elementary school I went to tried to label me as MMR. My parents knew better and had me tested by a child psychologist at Riley Children’s Hospital. On the day of the meeting with the school principal and teacher my parents brought the child psychologist with them. From her testing she told them I was advanced with reading, writing and spelling which was at a high school level. I was in second or third grade at the time of this testing. The only problem I had was how I was able to learn. I had to have a combination of seeing and hearing. Just listening to a teacher lecture didn’t work, I needed visuals. Another argument my parents and the child psychologist had was the fact that I always passed the state mandatory ISTEP testing every year. The only reason the school wanted to label me and put me in the classroom in the basement was because they would get extra money for every student who was in that class. However I was given the IEP that I needed and stayed in regular classes.
Y’all realize if Project 2025 is brought to life, this child won’t have an IEP because they won’t exist if you dismantle the Department of Education and defund IDEA- right??
Schools can definitely adjourne meetings and reconvene later in order to have an attorney present. This seems to be what the school was trying to do, but they had issues communicating it. If you intend to bring an advocate to the meeting then it is best if you tell the case manager or director of SPED in advance so they can arrange to have their attorney present if this is what the school district requires.

Well, I don’t know any specifics of this case, but my wife is a first grade teacher. One year she had a special needs child in her class. The mother was a lawyer and a zealot. If her daughter wasn’t keeping up- even with a (taxpayer-funded) nurse/assistant- then my wife was to blame. Yet my wife (a County teacher of the year a few years previous) was spending half her time assisting the nurse with this child. Basically the child was severely mentally and physically handicapped. But the mother had bullied and threatened the entire school district to keep her child in a regular class (I don’t know the law on this). My wife also had to work at least 2 hours- sometimes double that- at home in the evenings- on lesson plans, because she was unable to get a break during the day. After 18 years of teaching, my wife was ready to just quit. By November!. Our marriage was affected because of the stress. So I really won’t judge a Principal for quitting. There are two sides to everything.
If I schedule a meeting and the other person brings a lawyer and I wasn't told to expect them, I am definitely rescheduling the meeting so that I also have a lawyer. Not because I think the other party can't be trusted, but because I don't want it to be about what I think. Other people's lives are affected by the choices I make.

@CP-xm4gg If they know another parent who is knowledgeable about IEPs and is a great advocate for their child, then they can ask that parent to come to the meeting and assist them Also I think if they look up Educational lawyers or ADA lawyers they might find someone to help
I once substituted in a high school special ed class (different state) and that particular day there were only two girls with Down Syndrome. I was kind of horrified to find that the girls were simply given 'educational' games to play. They were designed for neurotypical preschoolers, and the girls never succeeded at any of the activities, because the didn't understand the subject or the way questions were asked. They did recognize the answer page and would randomly click on answers. So no knowledge being learned and no sense of achievement. The particular level that day was seasons, which the girls clearly didn't understand, or understand that each answer was to match the season name to a season picture. So I asked the teacher if she had a hard copy page showing the seasons and what they looked like. So I spent the time with them explaining just that and guiding them through correctly coloring in the picture for each season. It was clearly going to need repetition, but throwing them on standard software that assumes there is already familiarity with a topic and expecting connection and extrapolation in the thinking was appalling and not condusive of learning for the girls.
Cancelled a meeting because the principal was unsure about the regulations. Hardly something to get your panties in a wad. I find this entire thing ridiculous. Schedule another meeting with administration involved. Good grief. Doesn't anyone have any brains anymore?
Exactly. The amount of knee-jerk, judgmental comments here is ridiculous. It was clearly explained by the assistant superintendent that the principal was allowed, under the IDEA, to decline the meeting, which could simply have been rescheduled. Yet, for some odd reason, that fact is being ignored and people are raking her over the coals. It seems they prefer that the principal be dragged against her will to the meeting, chained to a chair that's bolted to the floor, and locked in the room, all because the parents "say so." The lack of impulse control and critical thinking skills displayed by hordes of commenters is an atrocity.
Principal had right to have another school representative there also. Parents seem full of themselves and lacking understanding, IMO. They should have let the principal know ahead of the meeting that they were bringing in a third party with them to the meeting.

The parents should have informed the school they were bringing a lawyer to any meeting. The school was justified in wanting to reschedule to insure the principal had proper legal representation. Principal education does not train you how to avoid seemingly innocent legalese when meeting with a family lawyer. And, in TN, that meeting can be recorded without two party consent and it appears that is what the family did. Advocate can = lawyer, for those who don't know.
Only they don't have to according to the law, The Superientendant should have been there, My cousins wife is the superintendent of our School district and everytime a teacher or principal has a meeting with a parent ther parent teacher conferences, the Teacher, Vice-principal, Principal and the Superintendent are all there and they video tape the meeting and are being told that it's being videotaped, it cuts down on the "He-Said She Sad" shit because, well lets go to the video tape and see what they said and also lawyers tend to not want to be on videotape.
@@TheREALOC1972 A school system the size of Williamson might have 500-600 parent teacher conferences per school year. Each one lasting 1 to 2 hours. Not sure how a superintendent could be at every single one. As for recording, I'm sure the school would let them know, but that is not sop for most parent teacher conferences. However, the parents don't have to inform anyone, at least not in TN. And while the law does not explicitly require a lot of things doesn't make it ethical. That principal cancelled a meeting so it could be rescheduled because the parents showed up with a lawyer/advocate. There is nothing illegal about rescheduling. The advocate was going to be welcome at the rescheduled meeting along with legal representation for the school system. That is to protect us the common citizens of the district so we don't have to fund unnecessary lawsuits through higher taxes. I believe it's important for taxpayers to be protected too. I don't know the details, if the parents actually have a case, none of us will ever know because those kinds of details are protected by privacy laws for the child involved. What this case highlights is that principal was not prepared by the district in how to handle this situation.
My son is a principal. He can’t be at every teacher/parent meeting or he’d live at the school and have to clone himself. I do think it’s wise for the principal, the teacher, and someone from the district office to be in scheduled meetings that are for things other than a kid getting low grades or not turning in homework. There needs to be a dedicated conference room and days of the month and times when the meetings can be scheduled and a list of people attending no later than 48 hours before unless it’s an emergency. There was a cheating scandal my junior year of high school. Only three parents were called. Two for the ones who started it and one for a friend of the cheaters who didn’t know anything about the test because her mom would have made her life miserable with every chore imaginable and anything else she could come up with. Which was a lot. I was amazed that they even tried. One of the cheaters parent had called and someone in another class saw them with the test and narced.

They were having the custodian help out as a 1:1 aide when he could. I told her this is unacceptable. Granted the custodian is a really nice man, basically the child needs a dedicated regular 1:1 aide familiar with his or her IEP to provide consistent and effective support. The administrator turned to me and haughtily said, “Why do you care so much? You aren’t a principal!” I calmly replied, “With all due respect ma’am - why don’t YOU care?”

The parent absolutely has right to bring in someone on their child’s behalf. Regarding CSE meetings, you do need to inform the chairperson that an advocate will be attending meeting in advance. That way both school district and parent will have representation. If all else fails, then if parent is in disagreement with IEP, it goes to an Impartial Hearing.
Kinda pissed off that my STORY OF ABUSE in the Williamson county school district didn't get this level of attention or action! 20 years later I'm still messed up.
That's crazy! Every single time we ever went to an IEP meeting, we were presented with a booklet of papers stating our rights either before or at the meeting. We were then asked at the meeting if we received the packet and if we felt like we were prevented from bringing a representative or other persons with us to the meeting. I'm glad the principal resigned and that this child might actually get the education she deserves now.
PROJECT 2025 would end a lot of programs such as IEPs. The book doesn't state that specifically but it would have all federal money just dumped into the states via block grants without any strings attached. So, any current federally funded programs could be dropped if the state so chose. 🤮
Yes. That is exactly the plan. Remember Kevin McCarthy's bull crap about if a program is worth it, then it should be reauthorized every year? Looks to me like the Principle felt blind sided by the parents bring representation, recording the meeting, and feared a hit job or simply needed to consult with the district superintendents office on how to proceed with a potentially hostile interaction alone. Of course it must be the teacher. It couldn't possibly be that, despite the teachers best efforts, your child still couldn't learn what was being taught. Your child is not the only child in the class nor can teachers make miracles happen
Talk to special ed kids, people you know who had IEPS and they’ll tell you they weren’t used despite being required, special ed teachers will tell you the same thing and yet schools don’t do anything about it and the majority of parents are unbothered…really really frustrating, getting an IEP to begin with is no small task and takes a LOT of effort…only for it not to be honored…. Appalling to exclude an advocate‼️If advocates were not essential, there wouldn’t be any.‼️
Please do just the tiniest bit of research.
Parents should develop the children and can work with others toward the goals they have with their child! 👍
In our district, a parent generally needs to give us notice of an advocate or lawyer attending so we can be prepared on our end.

Kudos to the mother!

The district's claim they are proud of their special ed teachers, etc., is a typical cover-up response from a district.

This principal is an embarrassment
@@mandawood9756 Being in meetings with parents is a part of a Principals job, the Vice Principal can do whatever the principal was supposed to do while they are in the meeting. I am a retired teacher. Special Ed needs more funding especially for para educators (1:1 aides). I remember in a meeting the discussion was regarding children who had 1:1 aides as part of the needs specified on their IEP. The administrator just kept saying we don’t have the funding so we try to make do. I brought up a case regarding a former student of mine that seemed to be regressing at the next grade level.
My school board does not provide 1:1 EA's. Ultimately I blame the government where I live for not properly funding public education. For not mandating smaller classes. For not providing resources.

Seems there is more back story here, as a cancelled meeting under these circumstances looks pretty innocuous to me. Principles aren't politicians. I hope we don't make them become them.
When one side shows up with tape recorders and backup representation, I think most people would feel like, "Oh, this looks like a lawsuit in the making, we need to reschedule after I consult with the district."
