- Just two days after his Fretboard Journal Live interview (where he appeared and played alongside Bill Frisell), John Pizzarelli stopped by the FJ offices to perform one more tune, this gorgeous arrangement of "The Way You Look Tonight."
Pizzarelli is playing his Moll 7-string archtop through a Carr Sportsman. We recorded him via a single Ear Trumpet Edwina microphone.

That extra string really adds another texture of "I'm never going to fucking play this."
+mrrusss Thats really funny, cracked me up TY
+mrrusss Yes true. I think the extra string is A. As i'm sure you know if John plays some dominant chord with its root in the fifth string he would move it to the seventh string. Like an E7 would be 7xx677x not x7677. Correct me if i'm wrong.
+N
I'm not really sure, but just looking at it simply, yeah an octave below would make sense to me. Being able to play a note a fifth below any root normally played on the sixth string would also make sense.
+mrrusss It's still possible to play this on a six-string! Look at my channel and you'll see what I mean :D
low A is lovely :-)
I love this guy and his Dad. What a great thing playing with your Dad is.
Quite incredible ,, John you're a master; chip off the old block; you keep the Pizzarelli flag flying high
I could listen to John play endlessly! Top shelf Jazz guitar man!
Its no surprise that the son of Bucky Pizzarelli is a phenomenal guitarist! I met John when he was just a kid, sometime around 1980 at Ken Spooner's Clearwater Guitar Gallery. He was a regular guy, unassuming and unaware of his status as royalty. When John entered the store, a Tom Waits tune was playing, he commented that he knew the Gallery was special and it was. Ken Spooner was a terrific teacher and his Gallery was a unique oasis in Clearwater, Fl. Ken tried his best to bring some culture to Clearwater with some live shows but the area just didn't support it. Ken moved to Nashville where he did well, he deserved it.
It`s always a pleasure to be able to stop the life for a moment to listen to this generous master of guitar and just back to breathe when the song is over.
Truly beautiful, feel as if im floating on the notes.😊
WOW !! WTF !! usually watch Tommy, Joe or George at their prime and think
"Man that guys a friggin Genius" but this rendition surely puts John up there with them
Thanks John for such delightful education
Great playing from John as we would expect and I love that extra depth from the seventh string.
One of my favorite songs masterfully rendered by one of my favorite guitarists ... doesn't get much better than this!

UNSTOPPABLE! John Pizarelli knows every trick in the book
Yo John, Crazy!!! Joe Pass on some serious steroids!!!! Can't wait to hear you and see you again at Birdland!! Miss you and the band!
Good grief. Talk about taking it to another level. Genius.
Hey John, I saw your Dad and you at Waterloo, back in the 80"s, Dad, is beyond compliment and your definitely the same, the real deal, thanks!
Excellent ! The most musically literate Jazz guitarist on the scene today as was Johnny Smith in his day .
John Pizz! So talented, so good. Music from strings, do Get a, brain, and joy!
Totally awesome guitar playing.
Really great playing from a very fine guitarist. Thanks for the joy of listening to you..
We can say it was only a first shot ....like some exploration ....and a few years later JOHN added his voice
on that even more stratospheric comp part , using classic nylon strings guitar for an outstanding fluent
escape . ( réf . briusada . John PIZZARELLI . Just the way you look tonight . At Home ) .
I return to this recording often, I just love that combination of the nylon and his charming voice..:)
John, great as always....
One of my favorite pizzareli
Beautiful, one of my favorite tunes. Thank You!
Very tasteful and virtuoso playing ! I never heard of mr. Pizzarelli, but I'm certainly going to find out more about him. Thanks for the upload !
Lovely.
Wondered why I was unable to
Make sense of some fingerlings until I realised its a 7 string.
my god..so many details
That guitar sounds really nice,... and the player also
I like the tone of that guy's guitar. Not talking about the playing but the sound of the guitar. He's a great player but I mean the tone. It's a lot of the strings being part of this. He's using LaBella flat wrap strings which give them an almost nylon string sound. Those strings suit his playing style well.
TO MUCH compression for me .That's not what i consider a great tone on
an amplified archtop . I prefer a single acoustic without any effect .It looks
here as John was using the octaver on a 102 POLYTONE of the 70's .
@Bennett TurtelThanks for the explanations and details you bring here . My comment at that time was quite clumsy . Don't misunderstand I do like and admire JOHN PIZZARELLI guitar playing and singing ....and Moll's archtop guitars are the acme
lutherie and the tone with rich harmonics and absolute definition of each note into chords sequences is a must . May I admit I have
some resistance to amps !
champion player, a pleasure to listen , thanks john!
That 7th string... whoot!!!
Genial, grande John Pizzarelli.
this lovely chords
Unbelievable!
I need to study this
I hear a lot of George Van Eps there! :D Amazing
Amazing ❤️😍
Bravissimo!
I’d love some soloing ideas over those changes
Great Harmony Ideas!
Thank you, dear Master! Extremely lovely!
Great virtuoso, rich playing! ❤
Wowwww 🌟🎸

Very very good!
This dude is legit. I'm buying a 7 string soon and I hope to be half as good as this guy
So nice!
Loved him since "after hours" "dear Mr. Cole" is simply a fantastic album.

Great ! :) Thanks John
I just bought a 16 string Guitar and when I opened the box there was an Octopus inside !
Perfect👌
I have a Jimmy Reed Twin Just like the one hanging in the first Minute of the song. Mine must be older it has a wooden Bridge.

Good Lord!

Go John P! When are you coming to Seattle ....?
Man !
Respect, John P!
sweeet!
A seven string would thow me off! But I'd love to try it.
Beautiful John just beautiful Santo Russo here Sonny’s son
Whew!
He makes the 7th string work-not a gimmicky thing.
🤗🤗🌹❤️
wow (,:
any idea on whats the tunning on his guitar?
who knows this black string name?!
What's going on with his black strings?
John uses La Bella Black Nylon Tape Wound strings. They come in a 7-string pack, too.
www.labella.com/products/800-7-black-nylon/
Fretboard Journal They're great on a Bass Guitar too..
+Fretboard Journal Is the 7th string a lower one than the 6th for bass notes ?? I didn't even notice 7 strings =(
Hey...Wait a minute you lost me....do it again🙄
I think he has said the bottom string is an A.
Correct, it is.
Is the guitar in b standard or drop a?
The seventh string is an A. Strings six through one are standard guitar (EADGBE).
you don't get to hear the george van eps'in live much
What's going on with his pink trousers?
Show business !
+Bbario pink is the new blue
Bbario you’re clearly a f- -k wit. John is not only a phenom but one of the few gentlemen left on this planet.
Can anyone tell me what's the chord when he places his middle finger on the low E string?
I’m sure you’re capable of playing other styles of music but how do you get by just playing one?
NIce Pink Trousers!
around 1:45
Sounds like he still is learning the tune to me.
99corncob I can’t tell if you’re joking
So..Pizzarelli huh....
Eats super mushroom at 2:56
Bass Little out of tune but great arrangement and 7 strong has a nice texture.
Really love this tune and John’s playing is unbelievable but, so many of these amazing guitarists over complicate their music to the point that it really stops sounding good and seems to turn into more of an exercise of just how much unbelievable finger work you can stuff into a song. Sadly in my humble opinion that is the case here. This would be so much better thinned out with more inflection than speed picking... I mean sometimes it’s actually hard to hear the actual song phrasing under all the thrashing.
Not really the point… but his outfit is great.
BAD NEWS: 1) John has been practicing. 2) His stylist put him in pink pants.
GOOD NEWS: 1) He's wearing glasses. 2) The new harmony on the bridge.
Don't like the sound of the bass string.. But the arrangement is yabadabadooh!!!!
That was boring
Out of tuning. Terrible. :-/
Robert Gliński what are you talking about
Robert Gliński lol no way you’re being serious
