When the interviewer asked "Did it change your life at all?" and the girl said "not really" speaks volumes. She just went through with the surgery to please her mom. It's sad that the mom is negatively warping the daughter's perception of herself at an age when children value every opinion, every criticism from their parent.

The saddest part about this is the mother’s obsession with beauty standards is so bad, she can’t even accept her daughter as she was and makes her believe the way she was born is “not as cute” or even ugly. I had a friend in HS whose mom had a nose job at 18, and pushed her daughter to get the same nose job even earlier in Vietnam (where they were from) at 16. My friend said her mom was always bullying her for being born with her original “ugly” nose. So sad because there is nothing wrong with the way she or this little girl look. • @rin55

It's not that the mother thinks her kid is not cute the way she is, it's just that she wants her to have good opportunities and positive experiences that come with pretty privilege. And I can't fault her for it. Because it does make a difference in life, weather you like it or not. Japan is also still very rigid in ways regarding girls and women.
And sadly, if there is a way to get advantages, there will be people willing. The mother is right about the fact that if the eyelid surgery is done this young, people the kid meets in life won't know. The more important thing is that the surgeries stop there and don't spiral like it happened for the hostess lady. The mother did say that any surgeries in the future will be the kids' own choice, which is good, I hope she can keep her word and won't influence them. Because rhinoplasty and boobjob are in no way like eyelid surgery.
I guess what I mean is, the mother is the symptom of the issues of society, and I don't think blaming her like she is the problem is right.
But therapy for her demanding this qould be great.

So I have deep set hooded eyes. While I have finally learned to love them at 38. It breaks my heart that this mother feels the need to try to make this young girl so insecure. All this does is create self hatred in this lovely young girl. She looks just fine as she is. Having a monolid allows for people to really see eye makeup and you can do all sorts of cool eyeliner designs that I can't. Because I have so much skin that almost overlaps the eye itself.

There’s plenty on studies out there that show physical attraction does lead to a better quality of life. This isn’t even that extreme of a procedure (though I still don’t agree with having it done at such a young age) it’s like getting a cleft lip fixed, minimal in terms of the procedure, massive in terms of the increase quality in life.

Anesthesia is a tough job. You could kill a patient so easily, and anyone knowing a bit about it would know children are trickier. They are not just tiny adults, that's why surgery should be avoided if possible at younger ages

i understand what the mothers was trying to do, she wanted her daughter to have a wonderful life because from her experience her own life as a child wasn’t beautiful because of the eyelids. she wanted the best for her and thought this was the way to do so, without realizing that her own mind was warped into thinking that that was the only way to her child’s happiness. truly she will be impacted much more positively growing up in a loving environment. when you grow up loved by your parents and with their loving presence, you think happier, you act happier around others, your personality is overall much more lovely, and that personality would attract lovely people who would’ve loved her as she was. the problem is not majorly society, for they do contribute some, but the parenthood of parents. depending on how your raised, it affects how you act as a person, and people will either be drawn or will not be drawn to that.

Yikes! 😬 As a Korean-American woman, I’m shocked that a mother would put her daughter through plastic surgery at such a young age.😲 Especially since her daughter hasn’t even physically (nor mentally or emotionally) developed yet. I’m not that against adults who choose to go through plastic surgery. However, it’s another thing to try to convince your child that he/she needs plastic surgery. Personally, I was born with a monolid, but developed a subtle crease around my late teens or early 20s. Back then, I didn’t think much of it, until my aunt mentioned to my mother in Korean that it was nice that I had double eyelids. Though I may not look like a K-Pop idol or K-drama actress, I’m quite proud of my accomplishments, creativity, independence, and inner strength. Yes, looks matter to varying degrees in different cultures. However, it’s only a fraction of a whole person.
