      Claudius has always been, to me, a conniving bastard whose need to end Hamlet's grief is selfish and stupid.

    • @josephzepeda7608
      @josephzepeda7608 2 месяца назад +1

      I don't think it's about his grief in an interior sense. Claudius wants Hamlet to show public approbation of his kingship. It's about the political role C wants H to play.

    Forgot to add. It was a clever directorial touch to have Hamlet seated and surrounded by his disapproving elders & superiors: Hamlet as a naughty boy. Very clever indeed. And conveyed with such subtle finesse by Scott.

    Andrew speaks like a normal person which brings the character of Hamlet closer to us. In sharp contrast his co stars however speak with that voice that many actors use when playing Shakespeare. Their characters seem distant and unapproachable. Therefore Andrews acting alone seems to be on a different level. Really fascinating.

      @GenOberst 4 года назад +4

      It's supposed to. Much like how it angered Hamlet. Because of what Hamlet discovers later on. He'd come back to Denmark to mourn, already suspicious of the circumstances. Claudius needs Hamlet on his side. Even though he stole the election for King (Denmark had an elected monarchy, where the lords picked the next King), he still needed the legitimacy of having Hamlet on his side. Even with an elected monarchy, there would have still been nobles who would have agitated for Hamlet to succeed over Claudius. And probably still are. If Claudius can get Hamlet to his side, then it would leave the dissenters to Claudius' succession without cause. If Claudius can't get Hamlet to his side, then it leaves the question of succession still open. While it's an elected monarchy, it was still unusual to not choose the designated heir of the previous monarch. It would have bred discontent. Gertrude knows this. Claudius knows this. Everyone in court, who is in Claudius' camp, knows this. And if they can't get Hamlet on their side, then they need to remove him from the country until Claudius can further entrench his claim and sire an heir to rival Hamlet.

    • @ctfangirl
      @ctfangirl 4 года назад +2

      @@GenOberst basically this. the only thing I would add is that Hamlet was perhaps not just angry at that point but straight up depressed. understandable given that his father just died. and then he's got folks pretty much telling him that 'boys don't cry' and he did the required 3 days blah blah so move on (if you've seen Downton Abbey consider the whole thing with Mary regarding Patrick's funeral. but the court is Mary). Hamlet's words are as much trying to explain his depression to everyone as everything else. but they don't get it and we move on to him basically saying "well perhaps i should just die"

    I know what Hamlet feels. Its like when you are the only one able to not vomit when cleaning cat shit. And your family was the one who brought in the cat while you hated the idea of having pets because of the clean up issues..

      I believe that's exactly the analogy that Henry Irving used when discussing his 1893 performance as Hamlet in an interview with The Times.

      Hi Sumukh... Hamlet's father has been dead some months and his mother (Gertrude) has married his father's brother, Claudius (they are the two older people in the scene). They are trying to persuade him that it's time for him to stop his mourning and get on with the job of being Prince. Gertrude tells him that death is a natural part of life and 'all that lives must die'. He replies that what he feels is much deeper than the outward show of grief - that even if he stopped wearing black or crying or sighing, it would make no difference. Claudius says that this is unmanly. That most men must lose a father. And he asks Hamlet to think of him as a father, instead.
      What Claudius and Gertrude don't know is that Hamlet has met with the ghost of his father. His father's ghost has told him that Claudius was the one who murdered him, and has told Hamlet that he must swear revenge...
      Hope this helps.

    he doesn’t seem think that hamlet engages in irony. “Sun,” “common” etc. Hamlet is impotently throwing barbs. Also, Claudius isn’t getting that he’s speaking publicly, at court. It’s theater and statecraft. Everyone’s just scratching and twitching like they’re in the bathroom. Affectation of naturalism.
