    I have finished my bamboo rods with the GG Original and the Clear for the past two and a half years. I also did a graphite rod two years ago. You are correct in giving credit to the bamboo rod making community, but to be accurate, Tim Anderson came up with the idea and technique years ago. He is a bamboo rod maker from California and he produced a PDF document on the technique. I have also used Elmer’s and Titebond PU glue and they work just as well.

    Thanks for doing this video. I was fishing at a jetty when I chipped my 11’ Penn battalion spinning rod. I fell down and dropped my rod on the rocks pretty good. I was able to fill in the chipped area with this GG white after scuffing it down with 600 grits and following that whole guide section. I’ve put about 5 coats and lightly sanded before every coat with 600 and the chipped section has improved a lot and is not as noticeable.

    Gorilla Glue CLEAR worked for me. Did this on three old rods. Doesn't look professional if you have GOOD eyes with magnifying glasses on. Have to really nit pick it. This was all caused by ME, not the glue. Glue works fine guys. If you can apply it evenly, this is awesome. I didn't spend a lot of time on my old rods. Still it looks fantastic with a ton of shine. I globed it on right out of the bottle. Didn't use a small brush. Reason for the above comments about MY poor but actually good looking glue job. Thumbs up for GG Clear.

      Just to clarify (pun intended 😁) you used the bottle labeled "Clear" gorilla glue and not the bottle labeled "White" which is also clear, correct? The labeling is confusing (way to go Gorilla Glue 👍).
      The one I used in this video was the "White" which would make a thinner and harder finish than the bottle they label as "Clear" like I used to finish guide wraps in a previous video.

  • @jonathononeal2570

    I've been wondering about fiberglass resin like you would use on a boat or car repair. and how it would do on a carbon or graphite blank that has had all the finish sanded off. And what would be the best way to apply it. Or if it's just a bad idea altogether.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 года назад

      I'm sure it would work, but it would be a lot more work getting it on and in an even coat. Another option is the oil based Helmsman Spar Urethane. I've used it on an old fiberglass rod blank before. Very slow drying stuff and it stinks pretty bad but it makes a nice blank finish (a lot of the bamboo rod builders use it). If you are looking for cheap, fast and easy, the White Gorilla Glue is the easiest option in my opinion. Just make sure it is a very thin coat and it won't give you any problems and it will be dry very quickly too.

      If you are painting the rod, do that first. A painted rod will need something like an automotive clear coat on top to protect the paint instead of the glue like I showed in the video. After it is painted and dry, then you use the clear coat to seal the paint. After that you will install all of your components (grips, reel seat, guides). Then you will epoxy the guide wraps.

    • @TheFishingHobby

      I didn't sand it, I scrapped the finish off with a single sided razor blade. Hold the blade 90° and lightly scrape the finish off. I try not to use sand paper on the blank finish because the grit depth varies across the surface. A razorblade doesn't so in my opinion it is a better choice.

    • @TheFishingHobby

      I will wrap over the original or white gorilla glue the same day I put it on. It dries really quick. This is not the same as the clear gorilla glue you have used as a wrap finish on your catfish rods that you left comments about on the video I had covering that subject. The original and "white" gorilla glue are polyurethane glues. The white gorilla glue looks clear in the bottle, so that can be a little confusing.
