The theatre is so lucky to have both your talents, singing and sewing. I wish I was closer to come see you in the show but alas Florida is quite the ride. I have watched your singing videos before and as always you did not fail to give me a smile and goosebumps. Very talented lade.
This was so interesting, both in terms of seeing the changes in fashion cronologically but also hearing the reasons for each costume choice in terms of character development. Would love to see some more. Perhaps other characters from plays that you would like to one day perform and how you would dress them (no pesky directors to say no).
I watched you make that last dress you showed(blue and white check) and it was such a transformation. I didn't like the dress it was copied from, I didn't like it when you were working on it - it seemed boring and ho-hum and the pattern reminded me of formica - and then you did the reveal and suddenly it was so charming, and made me think of Rilla of Ingleside. It does seem like a younger person's dress and would be great for Mother starting a new fresh life. And I loved this walk through story and time through costumes!
I loved this video. It was cool seeing what you’d be doing through the show. I’m in Texas, so I won’t make it. However, I’ve seen Ragtime, and your costumes are spot on. It’s very cool compared to the other show I’ve seen, but I do think the last dress would’ve fit in perfectly.
I have been struggling with mental health since last year (it’s been a long pandemic, right??? Oof…) I don’t watch media/plays unless I know what to expect, otherwise my own anxiety rises with the tension of the show, because my amygdala has a hair trigger, now. Last week was especially bad with gun violence in the US and I just cried. And cried. For 5 days. I don’t even have kids in public school but the grief has been intense, even so. I only have one fear that is worse or bigger than losing my kids and that is that I pass away before they are ready to be adults in their own lives. Aside from that, burying of my kids would be the worst nightmare of my life, especially if it’s from a murder, or mass murder. This is my long and windy of saying I really appreciate the preview (including the spoilers!) because I was curious about the show but kind of afraid to watch the whole thing without knowing what to expect. I’m from Kitsap County (WA state) originally, but I live in New Hampshire, now, and will have to miss you in this production; but I love the little snippet that we got, and I love-love-love seeing your show wardrobe of mostly self-made clothing! Also… I always love when you add your singing to our sewing content! 🥰 I don’t know that I have the emotional wherewithal right now to actually watch any production at this time. Maybe if there’s ever again a time of “normal” shenanigans in this country (compared to the last six years with really “beyond” shenanigans…) then I’ll find it online, if not in theatre. Thank you for sharing this with us today and congratulations on your self-made wardrobe! I know not every piece is handmade but this is still great! Well done! ❤️

Penniless homesteaders in Mojave Desert, it's doubtful Gran would've owned anything so lovely... but then again she was a church goer and might have had something special for Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes.
Can you get the 1981 movie "Ragtime"? It's fabulous. Elizabeth McGovern, Mandy Patankin, Mary Steenburgen, James Cagney, Debbie Allen, Howard E. Rollins, Jr., Donald O'Connor, ... I could go on. Not a musical but a marvelous movie.
I absolutely love this video. I love all the costumes of course. I couldn't help but think how creative it would be for a history or English literature teacher would be to have you come in a educate a class. The students would/could be inspired in so many ways.....it would create more interest for the students. You never know. You could even inspire a student to learn to sew!

Just seeing this for the first time a year too late. I would have traveled from California to Washington to see that performance. I love Ragtime, and you have such talent, your voice is incredible. I hope this was a huge hit. And yes, I get it. We did a "cemetery tour" a few years back and I supplied nearly the full cast of high school kids from the local performing arts school from my own costume closet (lots and lots of safety pins...)
I read the book right after it's publication. It opened my eyes to a portion of history my mostly white world hadn't known of. The movie and no way did it justice and I didn't know it was a stage show until you started talking about it. I am saddened that I will not get to see you perform the show but I will be seeking it out on RUclips to watch it after you explained it so beautifully. I’ve been a costumer for my local high school theater group for the past 15 or so years and this video was bittersweet for me. On one hand I LOVE hearing someone else walk through how character development is shown in the costumes! On another note, watching this also made me incredibly sad as that part of my life has ended very recently and I’m going to miss it terribly.

This was awesome! I want to jump on that "please do more videos like this" train before it steams by. I really like the idea of designing a costume/wardrobe for a character, it is something I actually am planning to do (someday) for a piece of original fiction that I'm writing. Now that story and the characters have their own flavors and unique aspects, but if you look back at some of my sources of inspiration, you could kind of say I'm designing a 1900s (decade) wardrobe for a female Draco Malfoy. So I think it would also be great to have some fun with interpreting a character's historical wardrobe, kind of like with the historical Disney princesses!
Beautiful! I think 19-teens is one of my favorite fashion eras. It was really cool to see all the costumes, plus learn more about Ragtime. I had heard of the musical before, but never knew anything about it. It was also fun to hear you sing (I am a little bit new to your channel & did not know that you're an actress and singer). This was a really interesting concept for a video.
Back to Before had an impact on my life. I had to give up many fundamental aspects of the way my life had been ordered and understood. It's been the best decision, but it was hard. Thank you for carrying on the tradition of this show with such grace.

Everyone, Family & Friends, that have heard me do it, say my On My Own is really good, but they’re also Family & Friends so...😊. Never did get a chance to see Ragtime during the Pre Broadway run in Toronto, but I really wanted to. Is Sarah the role the great & amazing Audra McDonnell played in the show? Just wondering. BTW, if you really want to hear a simply beautiful sung version of It’s Not Easy Bein Green, check hers out. It’s just her & an Acoustic Guitar & it is stunning!!! Anyway... I really enjoyed this & all of the explainations of the Costumes. Pity about the last one, as it’s so good & really looks good on you too. I do love this era for the look & how streamlined things became in Clothes. Still intricate, but not as much as the Victorian Era, which I also love. There’s something about the Shirtwaists/Blouses of this Era that just really makes my heart happy. 😊 Thank you so much for showing us what you’ll be wearing in Ragtime. Was that you singing? I love the Edwardian Era so much! I haven't seen Ragtime but I love Ragtime music! Have you listened to the Hello Girls Musical? It's about the American switchboard operators called "Hello Girls" who went overseas to man the switchboards in France at the end of the Edwardian Era. A fascinating subject!
Bravo!! Wonderful costumes and beautiful voice! I am a union dresser and worked the first national tour of Ragtime in 1998 for 4 months at the National Theatre in Washington DC! It was my first union gig and it still remains my favorite musical of all time! As a theatrical wardrobe professional, I really appreciated your costume/character journey.
ragtime is my FAVORITE musical and book. did you costume the rest of the cast, or just yourself? if you costumed just yourself, was there any worry that your outfits would not match the rest of the cast? side note: i was in ragtime as a sophomore in high school, and the edwardian lite outfit i was in really made me want to dress historically. i even did a full gibson puffed hair style (at least as best as I could do)! i loved it and loved how i felt in the walking skirt and shirtwaist. there were no specific undergarments because i was simply ensemble, but between the silhouette, the hair, the shoes and the makeup, i really felt like i had unlocked something new.
I just costumed myself. Luckily as Mother, I was supposed to stand out, so it made sense that my costumes were better than the other women in the show. 😉
I so wish I had seen this when the show was running! I have a new scooter so I'd be able to (I can still walk but not far) but I'd absolutely love to see & know the whole story. Love hearing you sing too. Couldn't you wear the last dress any time you wanted to? Nice you could also be showcasing your talents with costuming.
It's a wig! It's a long curly wig that I used for Jo in Little Women last year - at the time I had two braided sections pulled back into a sort of half pony. For this, literally all I've done is haphazardly pinned up the ends.

I remember this musical coming out on Broadway when I was a kid and just not paying attention to the white people's story really. It was huge to see the immigrants story since that was my family's story. I just remember everyone in New York at the time having something to relate to in this musical. I'm thrilled you're getting to play your dream role. Disclaimer, "white" is used to mean the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant rich people that Mother is a part of. Mother and her family are meant to be the lens through which we view the events of this show, but they were very alien to me a third generation American.

This show is about the social stratification of New York at the turn of the twentieth century and a huge part of that is how the people in the group that Mother is from worked to consolidate power away from the other two groups represented within the show (Eastern European immigrants and African Americans). Also the term white here is not what you think it is. At the time of this show the only people that were white were the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. If you were Catholic you weren't white. If you were German and Protestant you weren't white. People from Eastern and Southern Europe weren't considered white. Tell me you didn't read what I was saying or listening to what Rebecca was saying without saying it. Oh wait, you just did.
Very nice costumes for your character! Ragtime was also made into a film in 1981. It starred Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Crawley in you-know-what!) Mandy Patinkin as Teti(?) and James Cagney in (I think) his last film role before he passed away. It was a dark story as is the musical, but your costumes would fit either version. Have you ever considered costuming a whole show? You've a great eye for historical design...
Thanks! I saw the movie a long time ago (when I was prepping for Ragtime the first time I did it), but I remember not loving it. And the last time I costume designed a show was in college (The Importance of Being Earnest). While I'd love to design a show, unless you're at a pro high level professional theatre, the costume designers also have to do the building/shopping/etc, and get paid almost nothing.

I saw a suspiciously similar dress at Target last summer, but it was not nearly as sweet as Rebecca's version.

I’ve been a costumer for my local high school theater group for the past 15 or so years and this video was bittersweet for me. On one hand I LOVE hearing someone else walk through how character development is shown in the costumes! On another note, watching this also made me incredibly sad as that part of my life has ended very recently and I’m going to miss it terribly.
Is there another theatre group you could costume for?

This was awesome! I want to jump on that "please do more videos like this" train before it steams by. I really like the idea of designing a costume/wardrobe for a character, it is something I actually am planning to do (someday) for a piece of original fiction that I'm writing. Now that story and the characters have their own flavors and unique aspects, but if you look back at some of my sources of inspiration, you could kind of say I'm designing a 1900s (decade) wardrobe for a female Draco Malfoy. So I think it would also be great to have some fun with interpreting a character's historical wardrobe, kind of like with the historical Disney princesses!
Beautiful! I think 19-teens is one of my favorite fashion eras. It was really cool to see all the costumes, plus learn more about Ragtime. I had heard of the musical before, but never knew anything about it. It was also fun to hear you sing (I am a little bit new to your channel & did not know that you're an actress and singer). This was a really interesting concept for a video.
Back to Before had an impact on my life. I had to give up many fundamental aspects of the way my life had been ordered and understood. It's been the best decision, but it was hard. Thank you for carrying on the tradition of this show with such grace.

Even though other costubers often do analysis/reviews of authenticity/costume designer choice, the role development, the why, and how someone uses wardrobe to tell a story is neat.
I so wish I lived near you to see your show. I also did community theater for many,many years. I also had a tendency to supply my own costumes if I wasn't costuming everyone!

I find it so strange to hear your refer to the 1979 as old times I had been working for three years by then. And sad to say that I think in relation to race it is worse now than it was in the 1970s.

Never did get a chance to see Ragtime during the Pre Broadway run in Toronto, but I really wanted to. Is Sarah the role the great & amazing Audra McDonnell played in the show? Just wondering. BTW, if you really want to hear a simply beautiful sung version of It’s Not Easy Bein Green, check hers out. It’s just her & an Acoustic Guitar & it is stunning!!! Anyway...
I really enjoyed this & all of the explainations of the Costumes. Pity about the last one, as it’s so good & really looks good on you too. I do love this era for the look & how streamlined things became in Clothes. Still intricate, but not as much as the Victorian Era, which I also love. There’s something about the Shirtwaists/Blouses of this Era that just really makes my heart happy. 😊

I love the Edwardian Era so much! I haven't seen Ragtime but I love Ragtime music! Have you listened to the Hello Girls Musical? It's about the American switchboard operators called "Hello Girls" who went overseas to man the switchboards in France at the end of the Edwardian Era. A fascinating subject!

It was my first union gig and it still remains my favorite musical of all time! As a theatrical wardrobe professional, I really appreciated your costume/character journey.

ragtime is my FAVORITE musical and book. did you costume the rest of the cast, or just yourself? if you costumed just yourself, was there any worry that your outfits would not match the rest of the cast?
side note: i was in ragtime as a sophomore in high school, and the edwardian lite outfit i was in really made me want to dress historically. i even did a full gibson puffed hair style (at least as best as I could do)! i loved it and loved how i felt in the walking skirt and shirtwaist. there were no specific undergarments because i was simply ensemble, but between the silhouette, the hair, the shoes and the makeup, i really felt like i had unlocked something new.
I just costumed myself. Luckily as Mother, I was supposed to stand out, so it made sense that my costumes were better than the other women in the show. 😉

I so wish I had seen this when the show was running! I have a new scooter so I'd be able to (I can still walk but not far) but I'd absolutely love to see & know the whole story. Love hearing you sing too. Couldn't you wear the last dress any time you wanted to? Nice you could also be showcasing your talents with costuming.
I keep meaning to just wear the check dress as a regular dress, and yet, I never have!

It's a wig! It's a long curly wig that I used for Jo in Little Women last year - at the time I had two braided sections pulled back into a sort of half pony. For this, literally all I've done is haphazardly pinned up the ends.

I remember this musical coming out on Broadway when I was a kid and just not paying attention to the white people's story really. It was huge to see the immigrants story since that was my family's story. I just remember everyone in New York at the time having something to relate to in this musical. I'm thrilled you're getting to play your dream role.
Disclaimer, "white" is used to mean the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant rich people that Mother is a part of. Mother and her family are meant to be the lens through which we view the events of this show, but they were very alien to me a third generation American.

This show is about the social stratification of New York at the turn of the twentieth century and a huge part of that is how the people in the group that Mother is from worked to consolidate power away from the other two groups represented within the show (Eastern European immigrants and African Americans). Also the term white here is not what you think it is. At the time of this show the only people that were white were the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. If you were Catholic you weren't white. If you were German and Protestant you weren't white. People from Eastern and Southern Europe weren't considered white. Tell me you didn't read what I was saying or listening to what Rebecca was saying without saying it. Oh wait, you just did.
Very nice costumes for your character! Ragtime was also made into a film in 1981. It starred Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Crawley in you-know-what!) Mandy Patinkin as Teti(?) and James Cagney in (I think) his last film role before he passed away. It was a dark story as is the musical, but your costumes would fit either version. Have you ever considered costuming a whole show? You've a great eye for historical design...
Thanks! I saw the movie a long time ago (when I was prepping for Ragtime the first time I did it), but I remember not loving it. And the last time I costume designed a show was in college (The Importance of Being Earnest). While I'd love to design a show, unless you're at a pro high level professional theatre, the costume designers also have to do the building/shopping/etc, and get paid almost nothing.
I really enjoyed this format! I enjoyed seeing the changing fashions through the lens of a character. Would love to see more videos in this format.
