Hi it Me. I recorded this video pretty freshy after moving to a new place, so the recording ended up being a bit different than usual (you might notice it, it doesn't terribly matter) anyways, just wanted to say that there are some parts to this video that I'm not completely satisfied with, but was unsure how to do them differently to fix my concerns. Basically, I'm not sure I did this topic justice, despite my interest in it, so I hope you enjoy regardless of my concerns.
Honestly, I love Yuuto's story. People made fun of her, only for her to pull out the metaphorical Uno Reverse Card and become arguably the most popular and beloved Touhou fan character.
23:57 Yeah I agree, the chinese touhou wiki is insane lol. I'm constantly impressed by how good their coverage of fangame/album stuff is. They have records on the most obscure things. Like, somehow they have an entry for a random throwaway album that I made for an r/touhou event back in 2017.
2:04 those characters are all part of a series of old Illustrations by ZUN called "Portrait of Exotic girls" this girl is called "Hourai Girl", they have some odd similarities to both DiPP girls too, their names are also pretty generic like "Cleaning Maid" and "Blonde Shrine Maiden of Future Era", there's very few fan art of those characters, but they are actually pretty good. too.
Super happy that Buront-san gets mentioned! Unfortunately, the comic you mention hasn't been updated in over 12 years (30th May 2011), so there's very little hope of seeing it continue unless someone else picks up the mantle for whatever reason Still, great to see him mentioned in something modern, thanks for including him!
Yeah, I agree. I still remember when I played some Touhou fangame Shmup, and I gotta say Iesua definitely pick my interest the most. It just feels like she could be fit well within Gensokyo, pretty good design character, not to mention the so "subtle" reference to certain religious figure (........not Byakuren). Honorable mention to Corin, Phiased (The Last Corner), Fuma (Book of Star Mythology), Yukiko, Touko (Servant of Harvest Wish), as well as probably most of Sapphire of Panlogism characters, specifically Azure, Sakkagumi, Saga, Umehime, Padma & Ummu.
@@AmericanCaesarian The Last Comer is a peculiar fangame in that it chooses to adapt the Book of Revelation very loosely The plot of the game is basically "A star has fallen into Gensokyo, and was found by a sheep girl (stage boss 1 and extra mid boss). This was mistaken by Satan (stage 4 boss) (who has been hiding as the evil Shinto god Ame no Kagaseo for millenia) as the sign announciating the Last Judgement, cause Mumumu (that's her name here) to go out to prepare for the Apocalypse. Once defeats, Mumumu points the heroïne towards what is a much bigger threat than her to Gensokyo Iesua, who has been searching for Satan to retrieve Juda's soul, arrives in Gensokyo by installing her fortress of Angels directly from Heaven, on the peak of Youkai Mountain. During stage 5, you beat the angel sergent, Joan of Arc (here Janet Arc'Angelo), and her boss, Archangel Michel. After beating up Sanae who was trying to solve the incident before the chosen character (Reimu, Marisa or Sakuya), you faces Iesua, have a climatic fight, and then you get an ending. In the "true" ending, Iesua pretty much forgives anyone, including Juda and even Satan. Reimu scolds her for making trouble and ask her to bring a bottle of wine next time and everyone goes home. Iesua Nazareus is an interesting take on Jesus. She of course diverges greatly from the Christian myths, mostly around her crucifixion, using how Faith work in the Touhou Lore. I'll paste her character profile from the Touhou Wiki. "Though she is the child of God, because of the excessive pain she endured at the time of her crucifixion, she ended up speaking curses to God. "God, God, Why have you abandoned me?" Faith becomes power. Whether it's the past or present, Gensokyo or the Western country, this fact is unchanging. So, if one doubts God, the powers he has promised through faith will be lost. In truth, after the crucifixion, though Iesua was supposed to be resurrected as a holy person, she had already become nothing more than a human who no longer had the ability to bring about miracles. She had suffered on the cross and died. Initially, the betrayal of the disciple that had been planned by Mumumu was going to be turned into a good thing by Yahweh. Contrary to expectations however, upon facing the worst possible conclusion, the disciple who's true nature had returned deeply regretted his actions and was tormented by guilt. So, in a way that no one would see it, he took the body of his enshrined master away. Why? If the body disappeared, rumors of Iesua's revival would begin to spread. The rumors among the people would turn into faith, and the power of faith would become the power to bring about a miracle. Thus, Iesua was barely able to be revived as the child of God after three days. And so, forgiving her disciple was the first thing she went to do upon returning. ---The disciple, however, had already hung himself. His soul was not saved by God, but instead ended up being captured by Mumumu. Moreover, to make things worse, Mumumu had once again hidden herself somewhere in the world. The religion that Iesua taught to the world was truly a simple one. To write, it would only take one word: "Forgive." No matter how you decorate it with pretty words, everyone whether in the past or the present lives with something they want everyone to turn their eyes away from. If someone is able to forgive them, they can be released from their suffering. Therefore, first, I will give everything I have to forgive "you."--- To the people who had been living carrying such suffering, her words wrapped them in an overflowing love. When the star fell into Gensokyo and the sign of the last battle was mistakenly given, Mikaboshi Mumumu's power keeping her hidden was released, and the morning star began to give off a strange light. From this, Iesua could finally determine the location of the Demon King. She decided to descend into Gensokyo, but not with the purpose of fighting Mumumu. Instead, it was to forgive everyone. Michel, who feared God's Wrath; The still suffering soul of her disciple, that had been captured; Even the pitiful demon king who had lost all chance at reconciliation with God. "You don't have to suffer anymore" is the only thing she wanted to say. Only that. The saint who had forgiven the suffering of all mankind wished only to forgive them herself." The extra stage reveals that the fallen star was in fact the palace of Hades, who fell back on earth after Pluto lost it's status as the 9th planet, making it lose all the remaining faith Hades could get from it.
I believe Sendai actually shows up as the stage 1 boss of a fanshmup titled Tou no Kuni no Shuukaku Sai, though I don't know if her original creator was involved in any way. The game itself is pretty solid and quite overlooked as well, worth a look imo
This was a fun video. I was familiar with all the characters but still learned some new stuff (like Yuuto being in Rivals of Aether, and Maybell popping up in some fangames). Just wanted to mention a few things: -Chang'e definitely should have gotten a mention in the "canon but no official design" section. She's had two fan made themes and even a boss fight script, which is more content than certain characters who were featured in the video (like Myouren or Karen Yawata) -The game where Sasha appeared, White Names Spoiled Past, actually featured a few other similar OCs. Not talking about the main cast (who are OCs designed for the game) but the midbosses who are like Sasha (aka characters that were made in anticipation of specific games). For example the Stage 2 boss was based on an early screenshot of Sekibanki in Touhou 14. -I appreciate the Horou mention. The other Kaisendou final bosses (like Iesua, Mitama, Momohime, Mishandra etc.) all have their fanbases but they seem to be more on the Japanese side (meanwhile, I've actually seen Western content of Horou). Anyway I hope you do a future video featuring some full fangames. The Kaisendou games in general (TLC, MPP, RSS, BoSM, HoSB) are pretty underrated though some games have really fun casts, like Sapphire Panlogism and Wonderful Waking World.
I remember once hearing about Yuuto when I first got into Touhou, mostly from learning about Patchouli, I'm surprised to learn that there was more that I hadn't seen
Hello, this is a very good video! Thank you for properly crediting my music (Unlockable Girl ~ Star Azure Fantasy) in the description as well, i greatly appreciate it (a lot of RUclipsrs forget this!)
Would love to mention Layla's appearance in a specific fangame, since that one is actually doing something with her but it would probably be a spoiler, so I'll hold myself back until we might someday see that game in a stream.
Was not expecting to see a yuuto related video in my recommended today but hey, its always a nice surprise. I love the blue cookie baking bootleg and is honestly half the reason I even got super into rivals and its workshop community. Even though I don't really talk ab her as much I won't deny that she had a huge impact on me.
It really pains me that Sendai isn't canon, her story i ls just so well written and interesting (not to mention tragic and puts Reimu's entire personality on a new perspective)
@@ironmaster6496 The original was a mugen(A template fighting game that wants you to provide your own custom characters) character concept someone made as a "shrine maiden before Reimu"(With no specifics if she is even related to Reimu or how long before Reimu she was supposed to have existed). Then the fan community started making their own characters based on that concept until the one from Little Reimu stuck. The "Reimu's mom"-character also got the name "Miko Hakurei" because of a western misreading of her title(translating to "Previous Hakurei Shrinemaiden" as a name). I still personally reference it as her name a lot, but it seemingly died out and she is just getting called "Sendai" as a nickname now.(Which is very cold btw. 💀In-context, that's essencially just calling her a "has-been") Another semi-popular misreading that didn't quite die out yet is that the name of the series is supposed to be Little Reimu and not Childhood Reimu.
Im so glad you looked into that RoA bit for Yuuto! And im glad to have went back to watch your Wonderful Waking World stream archive, even if im 3 months late :)
I was a bit late when i arrived at the fandom to see the whole yuuto controversy, wish i was there because when i saw her art it made me smile, it has kinda the same heart that zun puts into the touhous when he draws them, they look funny and cute at the same time, is a good charm wish i could see some touhous drawn in the yuuto ichika style
6:44 this is that Street Fighter 3 character that got obsolete due to being a projectile character in a game where you just press forward in time to delete them
I can definitely see Yuuto and Monie getting shipped a lot. One is a Bootleg Touhou Character while the other has the Ability to Manipulate Glitches. One's a Magician and the other is a Fairy. Make of that what you will. These two havea surprisingly good chemistry when you think about it. At least to me.
On a semi-related tangent from the fan game characters (the fanmade schmups) , I think a good amount of people resonated with some of the Sapphire Panlogism characters - especially Padma and Akiwaza - but aside from those, it was always cool to see characters like Mitori, Sendai, and Satsuki Rin become "canon" within the fandom and being so recognizable (similarly to Kasane Teto, Yowane Haku, and Akita Neru in the vocaloid community/eventually the Project Diva games)
That elf dude is a male Touhou fan character done right. It kinda proves to me that Making my own character and putting tons of effort into it was worth it after all
It's cool seeing what people create from a series they are passionate about! I also have made my own Touhou character and made bits of lore about her and what her design could look like too. But since I'm not an artist she'll probably just stay as a written out character sheet 😅
I felt that when you said something about someone loving a character as much as the creators. I mean, heck, considering Kaisendo's bias towards Horou now, one could argue I love characters like, I dunno, Ruri, even more than they do.
how about the hakurei gods tho? their existence is literally only ever based on what Byakuren and Rinnosuke said about them... i wish they come to a next Touhou game
I kind of see Sugar Satellite's perception power as a failsafe in case Sunny and Luna's light/sound concealment fails. It doesn't present people from sensing you're there, but it can change how they perceive you. For instance, maybe she can alter your perception of her as something insignificant that you don't need to take a closer look at, causing you to likely pass her by instead of investigating further.
Appreciate the video! I've been into Touhou since I was young, but tended to stick to fan videos and things like that. I'm not very good at the games due to being disabled in ways that make these types of games very difficult. That eventually led me to move on from the fandom. Lately, i've been feeling nostalgic and playing fangames in genres I can more easily play, but having been away from the fandom for a long while now, was wondering who a lot of these characters were
Ngl, I still remember the time when I browsing touhou art and saw Miyoi for the first time. Tbh I thought she was a fan character based on Yuyuko XD Then sooner realized that she was a new touhou manga character.
Idk where else I would get to comment this but admittedly I don’t really know all that many fangame exclusive characters myself as before I watched this video I only truly knew about Kusuko, Momo, Saraka, Tenmu, An, Mitama, (who’s nonspells on Lunatic are more or less impossible to dodge which caused my mind to spiral downward causing me to take a bit of a break from my ongoing attempts to 1cc Mystical Power Plant on Lunatic Mode) and Riko (who on an unrelated note was also the first extra stage boss I have actually beaten) all of whom are from Mystical Power Plant which to anyone reading this comment if you haven’t already played it or any other danmakufu made fangames and want to get into fanmade shmups for the first time I highly recommend playing it The balancing is pretty great for the most part with some exceptions such as again Mitama’s Nonspells on Lunatic are straight-up Psychotic (even with the fact that lunatic difficulty was made in good faith in Ido’s head) and that An would pretty much get laughed out of the room of any running for hardest stage 5 boss no matter what difficulty. The mechanics in my personal opinion are good. Oh and also Okuu playable which is admittedly both what drew me into playing it back in December 8 of last year (I also 1cced it on normal back in December 15th of the same year) and why I still love it despite its flaws.
I didn't know much about The Iron and Yin-Yang aside from a few panels of a guy with Medicine i found on Danbooru, but honestly that manga adaptation looks really cool. I'll check it out
This was a fun video and I learned a lot, but coming in, I was hoping to see a video about YOUR favorite fan characters. You've played a good number of fan games, so I'm curious which ones you personally found memorable.
Who's more forgotten in Touhou Lore: Koishi or Rin? A bit of a tough one since one of Koishi can't be seen by the naked eye, and the other hasn't appeared in a Touhou game, period.
This was cool, I was aware of the existence of fan OCs, since every franchise gets at least 1, but only knew 2 or 3 of them, so this was really interesting. I do wish Chang'E would've appeared tho, since she fits in with the few first in this list.
Ah, so that's where Mart Murasa comes from. Only heard of her in the PDP Shard of Dreams Extended fancharacter mod......which sadly hasn't gotten it's second round of characters still....r.i.p. It's sad that artists just deleting all their work from Pixiv (or even just their most popular stuff) is so common. Why not just leave it archived there if you are moving on anyway? Sugar Satellite is a cool idea, even if only gods/youkai are born from belief. Accidentally creating a new comrade for pranks while pulling a prank. Add her to FMW to get a 4 unit combiner! Glad Yuuto's creator and Yuuto herself got a good end.
Hi I’m making a second comment on this video (your welcome algorithm gods) I was originally going to say this in my initial comment but that one is long enough as is which is why I’m making this a separate comment. I have an idea for a fan character and that idea is this: Nightmare Formed From Glitches In The World Luminera Bydo Alright you might be wondering who Luminera Bydo is? Well it’s a character I made up in my mind who’s design is similar to the character shown in 16:48 but with added elements from eldritch Horror and who’s name is inspired by Lumine the final boss of Mega man X8 and the Bydo Empire the villains of the R-type Franchise of side-scrolling Shumps. As for her abilities they are as follows: her abilities are to manipulate, rearrange, and corrupt data, to copy any spellcard that herself or one her many multiples has seen at least once, and she’ll everything about it aside from background and once a spellcard is copied Luminera Bydo can use a replica of the exact spellcard in its base or even stack it alongside other spellcards, and to multiply herself via glitches and bugs in the code. Of course individually she’s weak (only slightly stronger than faires to be precise), with weak fighting ability when there’s only one of them and can’t exactly make much noteworthy changes to data but given enough multiples and Luminera Bydo can make the internal code bow to their whim.
Where is that fangame list? I made a fangame a few years ago and saw an issue with the entry of that fangame. I would like to know where the list is and have it corrected.
Where does ZUN take inspiration for his characters?internet, books, old people, literate people whom know folklore, manga's.where? I want to make a game series similar to touhou but I dunno where ZUN takes his inspiration from and I am really upset that my game is going to be called a shameless ripoff
You could always tap into the sources that are completely untouched by ZUN, there's a lot of non-asian folklore out there and it's easier to research for us english speakers than asian folklore.
@@-FFFridge I want a series that is based around occidental folklore rather than oriental, but there some characters that are based around oriental folklore.but where ZUN takes his inspiration from, like if there are books about Eastern folklore, there definitely could be a book about western folklore
Often folklore mixed with Animesque stylistic choices and well, other video games he likes. It's really a mashup of ideas, it looks like. As for where you cam find info on folklore and such, it's pretty much everywhere. Internet, yes, there are tons of books you could buy, try to talk to people from the area you want to use the folklore of if that's at all possible. The good thing about Touhou is that the characters are pretty loose with lore and such, imo, so you can really get creative with fan characters. There are often many, many blanks that easily allow new characters.
Since this video didn't put much spotlight on characters hailing from fangames, it focused more on fan characters aren't prominent to me personally. I didn't recognize anyone between Mitori and the average Touhou girl. That just means it was more interesting for telling me things I didn't know, though.
I have a Touhou fan-character, Noémie Baskerville. I hope she can be in a Touhou fangame someday. I created her in Walfas first, as inspiration for her design(as I didn't have a clear idea at first). She's French, Bisexual, Autistic, and a converted Buddhist. I'm these attributes myself, which led to this, so she's essentially a self-insert with exaggeration. She's a naga, a half-snake humanoid in a similar way to a mermaid. You could also call her a lamia, as the two mythological hybrids are essentially the same outside their myth's origin. This fits with her being a Buddhist, as one of the Four Heavenly Kings has control over them(which was actually a coincidence, but a good one for me nonetheless). For now, you can still search her up for my art of her, though.
So...Can someone tell me how i create a Touhou OC? Which especifications i can take to make it "Touhoulike" since for example PMMM OCs have part Uniform School and Magical Girl suit and things like that

Yuuto Ichika moment
thank you for showing this funny little bootleg some love, we at Lame Dimension look forward to bringing you more yuuto fun.
It really pains me that Sendai isn't canon, her story i ls just so well written and interesting (not to mention tragic and puts Reimu's entire personality on a new perspective)
I suppose you mean the Osana Reimu one, given the OG one doesn't really have a backstory lol
@@juaneste4640Of course, wait there's another one?
i fucking adore her strengths
@@ironmaster6496yes I saw one where she leaves reimu bc of bullying
Rin on 2:42 reminds me a bit of Parsley with da green eyes
I was a bit late when i arrived at the fandom to see the whole yuuto controversy, wish i was there because when i saw her art it made me smile, it has kinda the same heart that zun puts into the touhous when he draws them, they look funny and cute at the same time, is a good charm wish i could see some touhous drawn in the yuuto ichika style
OMG ASPREY POSTED
Yuuto Ichika real!
It kinda proves to me that Making my own character and putting tons of effort into it was worth it after all
I strongly disagree, having some douchebag come out and beay everyone's asses is not good writing, is just the typical self insert gary stu fantasy
we are in need of a remaster of this video for kakkoi
It's cool seeing what people create from a series they are passionate about!
I also have made my own Touhou character and made bits of lore about her and what her design could look like too. But since I'm not an artist she'll probably just stay as a written out character sheet 😅
I felt that when you said something about someone loving a character as much as the creators.
I mean, heck, considering Kaisendo's bias towards Horou now, one could argue I love characters like, I dunno, Ruri, even more than they do.
Layla did appear as stage 4 boss in Alternative Age and possibly the main design from. And Maribel and Renko appear.... I don't question it.
how about the hakurei gods tho? their existence is literally only ever based on what Byakuren and Rinnosuke said about them... i wish they come to a next Touhou game
Yeah I knew there were lotsa fan-made characters as well, it's like a neverending list of anime girls.
Maybell seems to be Rozen Maiden inspired, being a living doll, design wise she looks close to Shinku from that series.
I've always liked the expanded 2hu universe. So many neat ideas for characters.
Great vid!
Sendai~. God, I love her.
Wish there were more fangames for her.
Appreciate the video! I've been into Touhou since I was young, but tended to stick to fan videos and things like that. I'm not very good at the games due to being disabled in ways that make these types of games very difficult. That eventually led me to move on from the fandom. Lately, i've been feeling nostalgic and playing fangames in genres I can more easily play, but having been away from the fandom for a long while now, was wondering who a lot of these characters were
Thanks for mentioning Rainbow Birb
Ngl, I still remember the time when I browsing touhou art and saw Miyoi for the first time. Tbh I thought she was a fan character based on Yuyuko XD
Then sooner realized that she was a new touhou manga character.
Y'ALL-
WHAT IF REIMU'S MOM IS THE PC-98 VERSION-
Nah.
The Dialogue we see implies PC98 happened to our Reimu, with both Yuuka and Makai.
Yuuto Ichika my beloved
HOROU MENTIONED LET'S GOOO
Iesua Nazarenu (the real Youkai Jesus) is the most underrated one and it hits hard 😞
I understand she’s not really that popular, but I do think Youka Kazami deserves a mention. She’s just adorable.
Aw man and who can forget Brad the best touhou
I didn't know much about The Iron and Yin-Yang aside from a few panels of a guy with Medicine i found on Danbooru, but honestly that manga adaptation looks really cool.
I'll check it out
I believe in General Set supremacy
This was a fun video and I learned a lot, but coming in, I was hoping to see a video about YOUR favorite fan characters. You've played a good number of fan games, so I'm curious which ones you personally found memorable.
24:00 untrue there is not the unofficial phantasm boss for svl jouou (you'd get it if you were me)
One of the fangames in this video looked like it was a romhack of Live A Live
Every now and then I remember that one fangame that featured Literal Actual Jesus (in touhou girl form) as a boss fight
I think that Apple Girlington taking cues from Johnny Appleseed is actually pretty smart, considering Toby Fox is, ya know, American.
Rumia:"Miko Hakurei? I miss her so much 😭"
Reimu's mom...
everytime I remember about it my eyes go funny
Yuuto Ichika Real
Run. scream. hide. Nothing will save you, as Apple Girlington has arrived.
Oh this reminds me of my hit character Kasen Iblueki.
I have a Touhou OC, but now I realize that the power I gave her made her unnecessarily powerful😀
anyone know the game at 2:12? i will be ever so happy if you guys can find it
Who's more forgotten in Touhou Lore: Koishi or Rin? A bit of a tough one since one of Koishi can't be seen by the naked eye, and the other hasn't appeared in a Touhou game, period.
The forgotten ones are listed as lost words.
whats the game he's playing at 6:44?
The fact you can connect Jerma to Touhou because of a fan character is hilariously horrfying
You know I've been wondering about this for a bit, but who draws your thumbnails?
Wheres Nix (Dark Girl) from Touhou FDF?
This was cool, I was aware of the existence of fan OCs, since every franchise gets at least 1, but only knew 2 or 3 of them, so this was really interesting.
I do wish Chang'E would've appeared tho, since she fits in with the few first in this list.
Create fan characters and stories is good inspire.
here for the bluechouli nostalgia
Can Yuuto defeat Flandre (Ronald McDonald) in rivals tho?
For those who don't know Ronald is a completely broken meme character.
Don't worry, TPDP EX FC is still being worked on!
@@wookywok That's great news!! Thank you!
yuuto
Hi I’m making a second comment on this video (your welcome algorithm gods) I was originally going to say this in my initial comment but that one is long enough as is which is why I’m making this a separate comment.
I have an idea for a fan character and that idea is this:
Nightmare Formed From Glitches In The World
Luminera Bydo
Alright you might be wondering who Luminera Bydo is? Well it’s a character I made up in my mind who’s design is similar to the character shown in 16:48 but with added elements from eldritch Horror and who’s name is inspired by Lumine the final boss of Mega man X8 and the Bydo Empire the villains of the R-type Franchise of side-scrolling Shumps. As for her abilities they are as follows:
her abilities are to manipulate, rearrange, and corrupt data, to copy any spellcard that herself or one her many multiples has seen at least once, and she’ll everything about it aside from background and once a spellcard is copied Luminera Bydo can use a replica of the exact spellcard in its base or even stack it alongside other spellcards, and to multiply herself via glitches and bugs in the code.
@@MokohiChan thank you so much.this is really helpful:)
I like Apple Girlington
i'd love to know the thumbnail art source!
Since this video didn't put much spotlight on characters hailing from fangames, it focused more on fan characters aren't prominent to me personally. I didn't recognize anyone between Mitori and the average Touhou girl. That just means it was more interesting for telling me things I didn't know, though.
ブロントさんが東方扱いされてると相当草が生えてしまう
Cisa Perlach Augusta
My touhou fanmade characters are Futakuri, Minari, Odetari, Oyuu, Suguri, Furumi, Minayami, Itari, Last Asuri
What game at 2:12
YUUTO ICHIKA MENTIONED!!!! LAME DIMENSION HIJACK
I don't have much to say other than... I'm a big Sendai fan
Horou 🥰
Which especifications i can take to make it "Touhoulike" since for example PMMM OCs have part Uniform School and Magical Girl suit and things like that
Iesua Nazarenus.
No Ha Seoi?? 🥲
She's at the very end of the video.
Ah i see, i didn't see her in the description so..
Man f all the yuuto haters YUUTO FOREVER!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
