Ha! As i said this being next. Now Cochem? Was there not long ago. Mosel area is always nice. Except the fact every place to drink or dine has a highly active road between sight and river.

Thanks for your video. I always enjoy watching them. You guys are doing the exact right thing for your kids. By moving to Germany you make them adapt to a different environment, to a different language and culture but embedded in a family that makes sure they are not alone if things don't go so well. Most people encounter this experience in their 20s when moving abroad as a university student. Your kids have already made that experience when they are really young. They benefit from this enormously.

Love the positivity in your videos, I really enjoy watching these kind of montages/videos. Me and my family moved to germany when I was 10 from Hungary. I live near Dortmund, in NRW. I find it interesting to hear the views of an american because most of the foreigners in Germany are from Eastern/Central Europe. I personally was afraid of moving to Germany because I couldn't speak German at all, now I'm 14 and can fluently speak German. People here in Germany/NRW are very helpful and friendly. I didn't watch many of your videos till now so I don't know what your childrens hobbies are but I would recommend some kind of Sport if possible, there are many great options like Football (Soccer), Tenniss, Ping-Pong, Handball, Basketball, Athletics and so on. No pressure of course. As already said, I love your videos and your positivity. I hope you keep this up!

My parents and I moved to Germany about 15 year ago (I was 10 back then). Germans tend to be extremely hospitable towards people who show just a little bit of an effort, especially Americans. I think Germany’s connection to the US is much stronger than that from a US perspective. I am thankful my parents made the decision (not that the US is a particularly bad place to live, but I think we all now the obvious reasons). So if it helps at all: if you can truly see yourself living hear, do it, don’t be scared (easier said than done - I know), they’ll welcome you with open arms.

If you want to remember your Burg Eltz trip:The „Lego“ Burg Eltz has been around for some time (not Lego the brand, the Lego type of blocks). It's by the German brand Bluebrixx. They sell several German and European landmarks, like Neuschwanstein, Mont St. Michel, Hamburger Michel, Semperoper, Akropolis…
My favourite is the fictitious Burg Blaustein. Which teaches you in its single sets the history of German castle building from 1200 to 1600. It‘s not made for children, it‘s for teenagers and adults - 5000 parts and much more.
I can absolutely recommend it, if you are interested in castles.

But i totally understand your reasons and both areas are pretty cool and worth to visit. It's one more of a little of interesting places Germany and Europe has to offer.
I'm personally a huge fan of traveling by train, whenever i get the opportunity to do it, I'll go for it.

We have visited the Vogelpark Walsrode (biggest birds-park in the world) and afterward the nearby Serengeti-Park in Hodenhagen (both parks near the city of Hannover). In the Serengeti Park we stayed for two nights and slept in an so called "Abenteuer Lodge" (adventure lodge). I can really recommend it for you and your kids to visit it! You can see animals from all over the world and an amusement park with rides and shows for the whole family. It was absolutely worth to see and we had a lot of fun there!!! Wonderful to see you back in my neck of the woods - sort of. Unfortunately, I am still in the US, and will only return in October, but I am glad to hear that you had somebody else guiding you around Trier, and I am looking forward to seeing the video of that. Hope your health holds up and you and the kids get to enjoy your time in buildings that are even 1000 years older than the ones you saw today at Burg Eltz. Trier is amazing, and I hope you get to hear about some of it, while the kids climb up the Porta Nigra or around the Amphitheater or the Kaisertherme, depending what is on the program to do for the day. Trier has so much to offer, you can anyhow just see a small piece of all that is to see, and with kids you want to target those sites that are more fun for them.
For the return drive, maybe interrupt your trip in a town that has a big swimming pool =Freibad (assuming you have a nice weather day), or one of the many kids friendly sites (i.e. the technic museum in Speyer).

Or drive in the other direction to Lake Constance (Bodensee), which lies exactly between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. I love Burg Eltz, I've been many times since I was a child and the Mosel Tal is beautiful. If you have time left during your visit, maybe check out the town Cochem and the castle there and on top of one of the mountains surrounding Cochem is a small Amusement and Wildlife Park called "Wild- & Freizeitpark Klotten /Cochem". The kids would probably enjoy that very much and you get amazing views down into the valley.
For longer hikes to make it easier for the kids, maybe try Geocaching? My husband and I started last year and already had a lot of fun with it. You can walk many kilometers without really noticing it, because your so invested to finding everything. For example just on the way down from the parking lot to Burg Eltz, there would have been 3-4 Caches hidden beside the pathway.

There also is the "Denkmal Bestimmung" or whatever it is called. Meaning: Every item has to have the look (in style and material) of the Era the Denkmal originates. Friends of ours own a Denkmal-Stadt-Villa. Everything on the out and inside has to be preserved (accept of bathrooms). If they decide to have the flooring re-done, someone from the Bauamt has to come around and approve both the changes and the materials about to be used. They once had an issue with the perimeter walls, it was a whopping 150.000€ job for a total of 15 Meters of a replacement wall.

We in Austria are making jam, cakes and high quality Schnaps out of "Mirabellen"..singular "Mirabelle"...and we also have especially in the North East a Mirabell subspecies which is called "Kriecherl" in Austria and usually those are mainly blueish but in the mentioned North East they are yellow as like Mirabell therefore hardly to distinguish ...also used for jams, cakes and Schnaps.
While the Mirabell is a "cultivated plant" the Kriecherl is a "wild plant" ..."the wild brother" of the Mirabell so to say.
The Salzburg Schloss Mirabell (background in the Movie "Sound of Music") has its name because it had a big Mirabell garden full of Mirabell trees in the past.
And "Sorry" always when I see a breadcoat of a "Wiener Schnitzel made in Germany" as like the one at the beginning of the vlog I have to cringe heavily..that´s not how it supposed to look like.... the breadcoat has to be evenly golden brown and the breadcout has to be "coating" - loosely - the meat and not "stick on/glue on" the meat...yours stuck on the meat and was on the edges burned and in the middle the colour was way too light....it is in fact very easy not to say extremly easy to make a decent coated Schnitzel when you know "how" and when its made with "love/respect"...but 9,9 out of 10 Germans are always butchering it ..which makes my eyes and also - as a Viennese/Wiener - my heart bleeding because "such a thing" doesn´t deserve to be named "Wiener Schnitzel"....and I presume it was ordered made by a german professional...and things like that besides other german cooking things/mannerisms is the reason why german chefs and "german cuisine" have a very very bad reputation in Austria in general..Sorry to say that but it is simply a fact which I now have to mention at least once just for the record..

Good morning! First video to watch today, and the intro music really woke me up, contrary to what's on the radio. Try to make (and pronounce) Mirabellenmarmelade. Some people like it, some don't.
I must be one of the few people who haven't seen Burg Eltz, although I was stationed with the army in the Mosel area for a quarter year. Only excuse I have is that it was in winter. On the other hand, I have seen Fürstin Gloria's palace in Regensburg when there was a christmas market on the precinct. The only christmas market, btw, where they take an entrance fee. Can get expensive with four kids. Cats, I think, are free.
edit, about lions: I once was at the Nürnberg zoo waiting for a male lion to get up, so I could take a picture of him. After an hour, I gave up. Lions are cats, they can sleep all day.
And did you really buy your son a wooden sword? Then teach him knightly behavior, especially the Minnesang towards women. And next year, when hopefully the pandemic is over, I would like to invite you to Furth im Wald, Bavaria, and especially to the "cave gladium" (Latin for: Beware of the sword) festival. Entrance fee is five euros, but those who come in medieval gown can pass for free.
