"Burg Eltz" is in the same family for more than 800 years and she survived all wars unscathed. Every generation has something to build. Middle Ages, Gohtik, Baroque, to find everything. That's why the castle is so neat. And if she looks familiar? She was over 30 years on the back of the 500 DM bill She is probably the model template for every knight movie
Pretty close to this castle, on the Moselle river, there's a town called Trier. It's Germany's oldest town, and used to be a Roman capital. Yes, you've heard that right. Roman Emperors actually had their main seat there, and in ancient times, it had the nickname "Second Rome". The town itself is ancient, and there's a lot of Roman architecture still present there today. The region is also pretty famous for its white wine, and lots of local wineries offer taste tests. Trier is beautiful, and there's lots to do and lots to see. If you're ever in the region again, you should definitely check it out!
Wow that's awesome! Thanks for the info! I'm planning to travel to the Mosel region next year and will definitely stop by Trier now that I know of its history
Trier is wonderful. Actually the whole of the Moselle valley is such a great place to visit that we visited twice. Burg Eltz is well worth the entry fee. We stayed in a self catering property in Enkirch called Weigut Stiftshof just outside Traben Trabach. Enkirch is a lovely medieval village. Full of character. The first year we visited we were there for the Traben Trabach wine fest. Great experience, including live music. The second year we experienced our host’s own wine fest, as he had his own vineyard (excellent wines too). He’d also organised live music.
Most german Castles where re-build (or new build) in 18th, 19th century (german romantic time period) Burg Eltz is one of the few castles that is really old (12th century) and only restaurated (with respect to the existing architecture in the 19th century). It was never captured even there was a lot of conflicts in this area. It's owned since 800 years by members of the same family and was on the back side of the 500DM note de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Eltz#/media/File:500_DM_Serie3_Rueckseite.jpg
most of those arent real or authentic castles, they didnt had any defensive purpose. You can easily tell from the lack of a real gatehouse with murder-holes, no outer ward, no crenelations and machicolations. The tiny towers also hadnt any purpose other than for the looks of it.
You guys MUST visit Rothenburg if it's not already on the agenda! It is the perfect fairytail town. It's where they filmed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Don't miss it! PS it's a fortified town on a hill so it's almost like a massive castle
Visited this castle summer 2016 and have to agree, it’s a fantastic place to visit. You did the right thing getting there early, as it gets very busy later in the day.
Ive been there last summer. Amazing!! I life close by the german border in the netherlands, and my goal is to visit as much german castles as possible.
@@timgoorman You should visit Burg Nideggen, which is quite near to the Netherlands. It was unfortunately partly destoryed in the 16th century during a fight between the german emporer and the duke of Jülich with these new weapons - canons. But still impressive and the small town of Nideggen has still town gates in pretty good condition and nice old town. The duke of Jülich build after that a new Zitadelle and town fortification in Jülich - the first north of the alpes constructed for canons in mind with bastions. Unfortunately Jülich was very destroyed after WW2 - but the fortifications are still standing strong - which were the aim of the allied air bombings. Also the giant bridge head added to the fortifications by the french under Napoleon is in quite good condition.
Check out the "Wartburg" in Eisenach and the "Burg Hohenzollern" in Bisingen...Those are my favourites. But you are right there are many castles and strongholds in Germany so I myself have to vistit many more of them^^
Oh what beautiful castles! I love watching you guys explore them and show us all around. The bees were a great comical addition, if not slightly terrorizing for you two jajaja. Well done, show us more!!
Awesome video!! Just discovered your youtube channel and i've been binge watching your videos! So glad i found your vlogs and will definately continue following your adventures!
This seems to be such a charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
This is probably my favorite vlog entry of yours yet. I love the German Medieval castles. Burg Eltz is at the top of my places to visit, along with Burg Abenberg, near Nuremberg. Love your channel!
Georgeous castles! Really looking forward to your upcoming UK vids. I went to Wales for the first time this summer and loved it. Especially the little fishing town of Tenby and walking along the Pembrokeshire coastal path - stunning views! Highly recommend it you're still in the region.
11:08 I visited both castles at the same time as you did. Funny. But ringing up the stairs has been hard to go without filming, to do this with a glass of wine in hand seems to be crazy. Now I understand what you mean by "endless adventure".
Dunrobin castle in Scotland is absolutely breathtaking. They also have an amazing falconry show in the summer. I visited about 6 castles in Scotland and it was by far the best.
I wish i could meet people like you, people that are into culture and castles! Discovered your channel today and immediately gave you a sub! Love your content:)
Burg Eltz actually got build in 800. It was planned as a manor at first and at ~1100 it was already a castle and many generations lived there. I think there were more then 35 generations living there
The Moselle Valley is stunning. Cochem is beautiful and moving towards Koblenz and down the Rhine Valley through Boppard, St Goar, Rüdesheim. All amazing.
Also, in Spring and early summer wasps are really helpful as they kill a lot of pests that want to eat growing veggies. They only become a pest when they are ‘pensioned off’ from their colony at the end of their season.
Burg Hohenzollern is definitly a must. Very beautiful. You will definitly be not alone. Because it is the Homecastle of the last dynasty of german emperor. And it is as beautiful as Castle Eltz in a same beautiful landscape but way bigger.
Great video, both castles look epic. Well done on the early start, really should try that more often. Look forward to seeing what you guys get up to in the uk. Hope the weather is better than you normally experience here.
Whenever you come back to The Netherlands, I recommend visiting "De Haar" castle near Utrecht, "Muiderslot" castle near Amsterdam, royal palace "Het Loo" near Apeldoorn and "Schaloen" castle near Maastricht.
Did you know that if you swat at wasps they give off a scent that tells their mates that they’re being attacked and so more of them turn up? Love this video, we visited the Moselle valley and Eltz castle a few years back. Stayed in the village of Enkirch, just north of Traben Trabach, which has lots of medieval houses. It’s also a great area for walking, if you are into that. The Meselle valley is a big wine producing area, so lots of the towns and villages have wine festivals over the summer. Wonderful! We liked it so much we visited twice.
That opening scene, though! Nice one, Eric 👏 Also, I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to your time in Wales! I met my husband there on a missions trip in Carmarthen, so I'm a little partial, but the towns are so quaint, the rolling fields, speckled with sheep, the old churches... It's all so freaking amazing! Plus, the people there are so beautifully genuine and welcoming. We visited Llansteffan Castle (c. 1100) while there; it's a really cool place with lots of great surrounding landscape for drone footage 😉 As well as some cute shops nearby.
We were there a few months ago, I was not in the best of health at the time so I limited my exploration to some inside rooms and the lower area but it is a very impressive experience. I loved the history of it. Enjoyed your exploration of it very much.
I did the tour at Burg Eltz just a few months before this video was posted (around May 2018) and found out this castle specifically is one of the ones that have the most original structure to it, alot of other castles in Germany were reconstructed after war times. The other castle we visited was Berg Rotteln, which is much much smaller closer to Basel Switzerland near where my Oma grew up!
Keep up the good work with the videos because they are AMEZING. Can't wait to see the videos you are doing in Scotland because it's ours favourite country. Gå to Arthur Seat all the way up to the top and see Edinburgh Castle it's soooooooo huge and beautiful. If you guys are planing a road trip in Scotland, then visit Urquhart Castle laying next too Loch Ness really really stunning scenery and beautiful. And now you are up there visit Glencoe ohh my it's amazing place. And there are so many other places you guys need to see in Scotland.

Research, well done. 👍👍👍
Too bad we can't all jump on space ships and head to other galaxies and planets so Eric and Alison can have earth ALL TO THEMSELVES!!!!
Does Eltz castle hosts weddings?

The German castle looks so old but it's amazing, reminds this in some of the movies.

The castle in wernigerode is beautiful! And the town makes it even more gorgeous!

If you are still in the area, I highly recommend Rheinstein Castle along the Rhine river. It's amazing!
LOVE that you had the glass of wine the whole way up the stairs!
I love the details of the castle is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing guys. Enjoy traveling and keep safe. 😍👍🏽👏🏽

The walk from Moselkern to the castle through the wood and along a brook is absolutely marvellous.
Those castles are amazing ! And i love how all the bees are attacking you guys , its so funny :D
We always have a problem with bees / wasps when we go to Europe for some reason 😂🐝 They just love us over here!
The Castle HOHENZOLLERN is pretty neat
This is the most beautiful castle
and this is why this castle was on the former 500 DM bill

Yes!! Hohenzollern is beautiful!! I visited this past July. I also think everything in Germany is beautiful ❤️
Yes, but those were built/rebuilt in the romantic period. Burg Eltz is legit
You should try the castle in Schwerin. It's just stunning, also with the lake and gardens around it

In my opinion you should visit the castle of Hohenzollern in Baden-Württemberg.
And while you're at it, go see Burg Liechtenstein near Reutlingen. Small but cute
Those 2 castles were my favorite.
Hohenzollern.... Wilhelm 1 ....3 .... I prefer Burgund and Chur-Cölln....
Totally looks like a magical wonderland 🤩

@10:14 I wonder how many people of the past have looked through that crack in the wall, even more of what they had thought
I think Neuschwanstein is the most impressive castle in Germany. Didn't see many of Germany but I fell in love instantly.

great job with the filming and the drone footage.
My favourite castle is the " Burg Rheinstein" on the Rhine river. Easily reached by car from the Frankfurt area in under an hour
11:08 I visited both castles at the same time as you did. Funny. But ringing up the stairs has been hard to go without filming, to do this with a glass of wine in hand seems to be crazy. Now I understand what you mean by "endless adventure".
