I'm a fellow Canadian with 2 senior rescue dogs & I can't even find the words to express how wonderful you are for giving this amazing boy the best retirement imaginable ❤ this is what golden doggo years should be all about 🎉
As someone who rescues animals as a volunteer, I've seen cases similar to Elephant. There are pets out there that will continue to fight to live not just out of pure tenacity, but because fosters or their new families show them so much love and support, they can sense that. I had a senior chihuahua pug mix that was totally given up on from a pet hoarder situation, she was 11 years old. Vets said she had 3 months to live. She lived to be 16 years of age. She spent her remaining 5 years in bliss. She crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully in her sleep.
I thought my boy could get 2 more years at least when at 16 he got what was to be his last rabies shot. The day before he was still playing like a puppy , picking out his clothes, But then, so since I've been relegated to I don't deserve what I'd worked for and was working towards, the extra care he needed for meds to get him past that was going to be impossible, nothing left to give up. So I frantically was calling everywhere to at least give him 2yrs more. He read flash cards. Found someone who said they would, they didn't. We were always seen as inseparable.
Using just the one leg in hydrotherapy with such an innocent look on his face ("Oh, should I be using the other three? I just didn't realise...") made me laugh out loud. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing! Absolutely grand!!!
Maybe his original owners were compassionate and thought it best to let him go. You don't know what the Vet told them. It would be rare for a dog of his breed to live to 18 anyway so maybe they thought he had only a little time left and thought it was the kindest thing to do.
@@katbar6066 how is abandoning a dog that has been loving and loyal for ~20 years the best thing to do? How would you feel if your family decided to drop you off in some alley to die scared and alone? It’s easy to surrender a pet if you feel you can’t deal with their health issues. No living being deserves to die alone, scared and lonely.
@@malcolmr3 They didn't dump it, they surrendered it. I personally wouldn't ever surrender or dump an animal and a couple of mine have cost eyewatering amounts to keep in good health. I'm just saying if they couldn't deal with it and couldn't afford to make its last days comfortable then they did the best thing. The vets were all amazed it lasted more than a few days so maybe their vet said the same thing. You don't know their situation so shouldn't judge them.
@@katbar6066 There’s absolutely NOTHING kind or compassionate in what they did, it’s nothing but cruel and uncaring. Rescues will often help with medical care if that’s the reason for abandoning a pet. If they have children, they showed them that it’s okay to abandon someone/thing when it’s no longer convenient to care for them. All he knows is that someone he has loved for his entire life doesn’t care enough to help him cross over the rainbow bridge.
So awesome! He’s thinking “I’m not leaving now that living is so very good!” No pain, no worrying about food, has a very nice home with many friends and a family that adores him. Yeah, he’s sticking around for all that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a few more years in him. He certainly looks like a puppy when playing but you see the old, wise man when he’s made to walk on the treadmill. Oh and him using his paw to ‘walk’ is hilarious and omg so smart!!
I'm grateful, every day, that loving people like Elephant's mom are among us. May this world continue to be blessed with the love and compassion like hers.
Wow! 20 years for a dog is a nice long life. I wish they could live to 30 or 40 even, but 20 is awesome. You brought his health right back up. Seems the last owners sucked at dog care, but you're rockin it woman. I hope you get even another year. He looks so incredibly happy and healthy for 20. He's got the spirit of a pup. 😊❤
What an amazing dog and a wonderful story. Thank you GeoBeats animals for all your hard work in bringing us these stories and publicising the hard work of the people who care for animals in need.
As someone with a dog that's about to be 15 and has her family berate her with questions like "dO yOu tHiNk hE'LL mAkE It pAsT 15??" Or "dO yOu tHinK hE'll Be gOnE tHiS yEaR??"... it just makes me so happy. My dog has such light in his eyes, and despite the few hurdles in his health, it hasn't been anything life threatening (thankfully). He has trouble with stairs, but mostly bcs his spirit is too young for his body now (even if I make easier ways for him, he still tries the stairs bcs he's so stubborn.. but it's his stubborness what's made him keep going), and I know I'll keep giving him everything he needs until he knows it's time. I'm glad to know many others think the same despite what some ppl may think. Some will just keep going bcs they still have sm life in them, we should also keep going with them if they can and want. ❤️🐕 I hope this good boy lives his happiest life from here on out 💜💜
I had a dog for 17-years that was born with a heart issue. He passed away in 2021. The entire time I had him, I had this feeling we're on borrowed time and I appreciated every day. I imagine that's kind of how this lady feels. Living to 20-years-old is really something, especially for a larger dog like this. Maybe his start in life as a working dog in the country increased his longevity? I once read the longest living dog on record was a border collie that worked on a farm and herded sheep his entire life.
He was 18 when they let him go. That’s an ancient dog. Clearly they did a damn good job with him but couldn’t afford the costs of the care he needed. There’s no evidence at all that he was abused or neglected; he just got old and sick. Remember the vets were telling his new family they would only have 3 weeks with him. People who dump animals because they’re inconvenient, or who are abusive, are the dregs but these people weren’t.
Nice story.Got our first dog a few years ago. Wanted a senior. She was a breeder at a puppy mill. What a lovely soul.. Adopted at 9 yrs, going on 11. Perfect pup
A beautiful bond you have with him. Thank you for bringing him to be part of your family. My granddog will be 15 soon and was diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease almost a year ago and was put on a special diet and just recently had lab work and the vet said she is the healthiest senior dog with kidney disease. She is so special to me and my best friend.
