Herb Alpert ~ Aranjuez (Mon Amour) 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

- When Herb Alpert released the very timely "Rise" LP in 1979, he already had twenty years of musical experience behind him. His impeccably produced 60's instrumentals graced the airwaves hungry for his special brand of latin fused jazz instrumentals. Then he surprised us all by using his own voice when he sang "This Guy's In Love With You" a #1 pop hit for four weeks in June 1968. After that he kinda disappeared off the charts but his A&M label did kick start the careers of The Carpenters and Captain & Tennille, both tremendous successes before his company turned their focus on new bands like The Police, Joe Jackson and later, Janet Jackson. In late 1978, Alpert was convinced by his nephew Randy Alpert who thought the time was right for him to record disco-fied versions of his Tijuana Brass hits. I think he was a couple of hours into the new version of "The Lonely Bull" when he realized it was not working and stopped the session. Since studio time was already booked for several more sessions he took suggestions for the new tracks. Randy now dubbing himself as Randy Badazz, gave Alpert a demo tape of songs he and his friend Andy Armer had been working on. The basis for "Rise" was on that tape, and the rest is history. I bought the album and instantly fell in love with every song, from the opening fanfare of "1980" signalling a new direction for Herb Alpert, all the way to last track "Aranjuez (Mon Amour)". Incidentally, "Aranjuez" was the B side to the million selling single "Rise". This was the first album I bought that I listen to from start to finish, its great to paint walls to. This particular version was inspired by "Concierto de Aranjuez", written in 1939 by Joaquin Rodrigo and it established him as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the last century. Alpert made a disco flavored flamenco version out of it that completely updated it into an energetic dance song. I figured a bull fighting crowd would add some atmosphere and drama over the break...Olé!

Rodriguez' Concerto de Aranjuez is one of my absolute favourites. Brings a tear to my eye every time. Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain reworking does too.

Nice Instrumental with a great beat. I sounds Middle Eastern.
Herb Alpert is Jewish - hence the middle eastern sound even though he is an L.A. native and grew up in So CA. A lot of people think he is Latin or a Mexican because of his Tijuana Brass records like Lonely Bull and Tijuana Taxi etc. I made that mistake for years. I thought he was a guy who grew up playing Mariachi music or a Concionero and the truth is he was, plus he played all kinds of music. He's so versatile and like Harry James he has a sound that's instantly recognizable on the radio whether it's Rise, this tune or Mary Had A Little Lamb!
Great info! Also, don't forget that the Moors had a huge influence on Spanish culture, including music.
Este som faz a gente viajar.... lindo

La primera vez que escuche esta melodía fue en versión merengue, con Fernando Villalona, luego la escuche en esta versión y me gustan las dos
I've always liked Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez," originally written for classical guitar and orchestra, but I never dreamed the Adagio (second movement) could have become such as snappy pop tune until I heard Herb's recording of it, with none of the dissonance that plagued Miles Davis' recording on his 1960 "SKETCHES OF SPAIN" album. While I'm aware that the A-side of the single, "Rise," peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart in 1979, I've always preferred "Aranzuez (Mon Amour" to the A-side. I own all of the versions of it, the 7" single, the album, the 12" single and the 2007 remix on the Shout! Factory CD reissue, and my only fault with the 7" single is that it's too short. It's unquestionably my favorite of all of the tunes in Herb Alpert's discography, and I've been a fan ever since I first heard "The Lonely Bull" on the radio in 1962. Why it wasn't saved for a subsequent A-side single on it's own baffles me. I enjoy the two versions on the "Rise" album so much that riding in the car, the album remains in my CD changer and when "Aranjuez" comes on, I hit the "repeat track" button on the player and listen to it over and over again!
I have the Miles Davis "Sketches Of Spain" on CD that a tenant gave me when I was a landlord. She knew some of the music I was listening to when I did some work in her apartment, and when I was done, she gave me her 2nd copy of the CD as a thank you. I also have the "Rise" CD and turn it up when "Aranjuez" comes on, latin sounds with a disco beat have always raised my temperature.
Absolutely love this, my favorite Herb Alpert song, such a genius. Thank you Mr. Alpert.

Oh Love what all memos flushed with all love.
Dear DJ Disco Cat, I know you don't usually do mashups, but I'm thinking a mashup of this and Rise (with a faster tempo) would sound awesome, especially with your skills and perfectionism.
That's all. Awesome version.
Someone out there should combine Rise and Dancing Queen.
Good Version, i also love Charo's version, it is hot!

I use to think herb Albert was black. Damn I’m relearning shit!
I thought that Tom Jones was black when I was little, also Colonel Sanders of KFC (no this is not a joke or troll comment!) LOL
Somehow I can't imagine Rodrigo thinking "disco" in his head when he thought of this delicate, romantic adagio. Alpert put the wrong spin on his interpretation. He has the capacity to play this trumpet solo with all due respect to the composer and missed his mark. Sorry. Two thumbs down from me.
Mi versión favorita de Aranjuez. Gracias por compartirla
dont like the edit!!
