Need a prison architect tutorial? Or some prison architect tips? Or maybe you just want some good ole prison architect gameplay? Then you are in the right place! In this prison architect beginners guide I cover everything that you're going to need for this management sim! In this prison architect update, you will learn everything necessary to get an up and running prison! Enjoy!

As an already advanced warden, I recommend you to not pause time at the beginning when your cashflow is green, because it gives you 800 extra a day and will spare you some time, especially when building a large prison from scratch. Also if you build a shower just put the drains at the entrance instead. I tend to not build showers blocks at all anymore and instead build bigger cells with a few more things to keep the prisoners happier (=less riots, less stabbing, etc...) including a shower in every cell so they can do that anytime they have the need to from their cell. Also with the newest update make sure to not only build fences but put barbed wire on them, or surround the yard with buildings entirely, because the prisoners love to climb fences.... (-> that gives me quite the headache lately when building 300 x 300 prisons....
Btw you only need 1 sink per kitchen from my experience. Instead build more cookers and fridges (approx. 2:1 for 2 cooks supplying maybe about 10 Prisoners).
Important: If you are going to utilize a holding cell you definitely need bunk beds too or the prisoners will start rioting after a short amount of time!
To make things easier and quicker use „Quick build“. Most often I use „clone“. I build and furnish 1 room and then copy that for the rest.
Dont forget to add sprinklers! Dont be that person who looses a complete save because he forgot to add a few sprinklers.
To increase the happiness of prisoners of a cell (and the cell rating) put a window in every cell, especially if the cell window would grant them a view on outside. (Cell grading can be found and checked in the Logistics tab => needs to be unlocked over bureaucracy).

Dont unlock „Legal“ at the beginning. That is the last thing I usually unlock because its expensive and you can use the money better for other stuff.
For the infirmary its actually enough to have a cramped infirmary with 5 beds ad 2 morgue slabs. (I usually build the morgue and infirmary in one room.)
There are still a few things that I havent mentioned here. For example that your prison is easy to escape from. I would change that with perimeter walls surrounding the entire prison, road blocks for the roads and the „deployment“ tab where you can set the entrance to be staff only so that the prisoners dont just walk out the front door.

Fun fact about the shower thing. I work at a prison and they have showers in the cells in the interest of safety, time management, and crowd control.

So many damn good ideas from the community, and the way you put it....It seems so obvious to put them in the cells the more I think about it lol. I'm no expert, but being a prison officer makes me think about the game in a different way.
There are plenty of potential or missing features from the game which may seem minor, but as someone whose job it is to ensure a regime runs smoothly, is incredibly frustrating. Although having said that I understand that there are limitations of a video game, and I am very impressed and happy that we can get a prison management simulation game this ambitious.
I've owned this game for 2 years and never really bothered to play it seriously because it was just way to hard for me to understand the mechanics at first and I just kinda frustrated myself. But now I can actually play the game AND know what I am doing!

you should try Lords and Villeins... its basically same graphics and concept for building, but way more advanced for npc interactions.

I hurt a little inside when you put drains under every shower head instead of just the entrance. I know they don't cost much money and to each his own with prison style, but that little voice inside me screamed "INEFFICIENT!" Lol

This it technically inefficient and efficient depending on out look it is inefficient from financial outlay as you say but any tile with water on it has a higher cleaning requirement for janitorial staff dropping environment modifier dealt with by prisoners with a cleaning cupboard but for higher security most likely keeping your paid janitor doing more so you may loose more money from needing more janitors I have no exact numbers on this but both methods have positives and negatives =)

just a tip: for economy reasons, you don't have to put the drains beneath each shower head in the shower room, just add a couple at the (door) opening to close off the shower room so the water doesn't get beyond that - it will as well drain the whole shower room automatically. You can place drains , if you want, beneath shower heads for individual showers in a cell so it doesn't actually flood the whole cell.
and for early money boost, just cut some trees and sell or export them

If I may add a suggestion: leave the game running while you're planning so that you can make some extra money. As long as you aren't taking in prisoners, you can't go into the negative until you hire an accountant, so it's better to keep that daily income coming in.

This has really been useful. I got the game and then realized there was no tutorial and I had *no clue* what I needed to do to get my prison going.

Thanks for the tips! Just started the other day and really enjoying it. Spent an hour last night just planning/setting up my prison before accepting any prisoners. Can’t wait to learn the game more so I can figure out what different crazy scenarios I can make happen 😄.

I needed this so bad. This game literally just doesnt want to teach you anything. I have genuinely never had a more frustrating experience trying to learn a game
Did you do the campaign? I found that really useful in terms of learning how to play the game because it gives you a to-do list and explains what to do in bite-size chunks, whilst also having a semi-interesting story line and some cool art :)
@@willowcloud57 just knowing that I could stop intake at will and take grants with short term objectives helped to the point where I can run a small prison somewhat effectively. I stopped playing the campaign because I didn't know how to stop taking in prisoners and it was really stressing me out. I'll probably try to finish it now
I felt completely the same way when I first started playing this game, literally why I decided to make a channel based on games like this. It seems to be a trend in builder type games.... So glad that you found this useful though and it helped! Thanks so much for the comment and the support!
Some small things I noticed in this tutorial, all of your points are perfect, but, there are a few things that you can do that are faster than what you are doing, please do not take offence to this. This list might save money (even the smallest amount) or is faster to do than other options.
1. When planning, there is an option in the menu that builds all plans automatically for you instead of doing it manually, you can also place doors like this as well as the wall type.
2.When placing doors on walls awaiting construction, you do not have to have a wall to place a door, you can place a door in it's place without a wall being there, this will save barely any money, but it's some.
3.You can double click to place a door.
4.This is just mean, I'm sorry. You start with 3 capacitors, so you can place 3 without paying anything, I'm sorry for the pettiness.
5.In the showers, you can place 4-8 drains in the center and under the door, it costs less.
6.Prisoners will see shower heads in their cells as valid shower rooms, so you can fit more cells in place of the shower room, though I'm not entirely sure how cost effective that is so I'll have to do some math and edit this.
7.If you need something built urgently, I think ctrl-left click will give it priority, which means it will be built before anything else.
8.If you need to build a prison quickly, or just lazy doing things manually, the quick-build tab has lots of buildings and rooms, but you don't have to.
If I made any mistakes please let me know, if there are things I missed, please let me know, and if you have any feedback I could add, I will.

One of the tricks I learned was to put a shower head, drain, and toilet in each cell. That allows you to limit the amount of fights that can happen in the shower. You can use that area for cells and since you are running plumbing for toilets, it fills the pluming for the shower head as well. The only thing you need to do for the grant is to have a shower. You can make a single square shower with shower head until you get the grant money and then remove it.
Another really good tip is to build in a jungle area. Since, you can cut down the many trees in the jungle and get tons of money from selling the logs. That in a large area means at least 50,000+ extra money or so.

Man this is so helpful, I got this game after years of wanting it and I’m so happy about it, thanks for the tips.
Tip to others, that intake area that was built in this video is not up to snuff. I did the same thing and noticed that the prisoners were going to delivers, not that area. So i tried to build a reception but because that area wasn't built as a closed room initially, i couldn't assign it as reception. So make sure you build a fully enclosed building, THEN put doors on either end.
Yea that sounds like a door placement issue. If it's not built just right the game will sometimes force them through staff doors or wherever is accessible. Glad you figured it out!
I would like to add that it helps making cells with outdoor windows, because it is the easiest way to improve the cell quality by a lot.
Ahhhh that makes so much sense, we were taught the difference between a room with and without light and how it effects mental health in architecture school, this is factual so it makes sense adding that little touch into the game! Thanks for the heads up, cheers!
Man, I'm having so much trouble with this game. I start a prison and it'll day the prisoners have no access to a canteen. Then the kitchen doesn't have access. Cant build a yard cause it has to be behind at least one door. I added like ten doors
I could be because your individual rooms are inside the door if so you need to remove the room Inside of the door
This sounds like a bug that happens when you don't have your entire perimeter secured! Make sure you go around your prison and make sure that there are absolutely no holes in your fence and that should fix the issue if everything else is built properly! Hope this helps man, let me know!

One ULTIMATE tips extend your cables to the edge of the map, leave one meter, then another cable for new generator
Building area must as clean possible from the cables, save you pain moving them when need land to buold but mist connect to new generator
And if possible don't overlap cables and pipes, cause moving cable meaning demolish old line, that will demolish overlapping pipes too

You can save money by placing the drains on the exit/entrance of the shower block, then just have the shower heads in their regular spots

This is really in depth stuff. I subscribed. Looking forward to some good stuff.
I recognize this is a year old already, but this is really bugging me. When you build showers you only need to place the drain in the entrances of the shower to block water from flooding out. There is no reason to have 10+ drains in one shower.
Also another thing, this time regarding the pipes. You don't want large pipes near cells/cell walls because inmates can tunnel into them and escape easier.
I don't know man just watching those workers build is extremely satisfying .. 😅

I knew all this but thanks good job i watched it just to try to kinds steal a layout. Its hard for me to conceptualize an efficient prison. I always try to make it a circle but then i wind up with useless hallways.
Tip when it rains water can go on the floor and if water goes in the gen the gen will go on fire
Putting large pipe under wall make it easier for prisoners to make a tunnel above it

Nice. I have been eyeing this on the Switch, though quite expensive ($42 AU, not including the X2 DLC). Was wondering, is this worth buying? I like sim games and tycoon games, this seems up my alley, but never played it before.

So many hours can be dumped into this game just having a blast getting lost in creating a prison! Highly recommend it if you like sim tycoon style games! Go for it, you wont regret it!

Im building a giant city, fully functional, roads, Arcades, Café(s) Diner, Cafeteria/Canteen, Restaurant(s) Hotels, Apartments, Utility Room(s), Armoury (For Emergencies) Guards just like Police cars, Parks/Yards, and a Storage along with Staff rooms, Mayor (Warden), Deliveries, Security, Offices, Etc. Oh and showers.

I mainly watched this video because I was confused how the money works in this game. One day I would be making money and the next day I would be like 1000 dollars in dept.
I have to say, I really enjoy your video's, learning a lot. I am having a problem, and wonder if you have ever ran into it. You lay out some foundations, the workers start to build them, then all of a sudden they stop and never go back to it. I have tried everything and nothing is working. I end up having to destroy the room and trying to start over. Does this when I do quick build and / or lay foundations first. Hope this makes sense.
Hmmmmm, this sounds like there is no entrance placed on the foundation anywhere? Building the original foundation should be pretty simple, just click and drag, once you release, MAKE SURE that you add an entrance (cell door, staff door ect.) somewhere and they should complete the building right up!
