I also work in the field, I do mainly Server and Network Management, but have come quite the IP Surveillance admin over the years as well. I recommend using software called "Milestone XProtect". It is not as intuitive as a setup, there is definitely a learning curve. But, the things you can do with this software is really mind blowing. Best of all, as long as you are using 8 Cameras or Less, they have a free version, it still needs a key but you get that for free on Install, and the software is completely unlocked for everything a home user would need and more, and you only have to start paying a license fee if you intend to use more then 8 camera's with the software. It also extremely scaleable across networks if you ever did license it. So for instance, if you ever got am office to work out of, or a second home or something, you could install the software on another PC there and tie together both systems through a VPN, and have a redundant setup where your recordings can copy across the VPN to the Other's PC, meaning you footage is in both places in case you ever lose one, and allows you to access your cameras from just one place. You get a web GUI interface to log into and view your cameras, and it displays them on your screen so you can easily see all cameras at once. I use it at my home, as well as have huge sprawling networks of Camera's setup at clients corporate offices, and they love what I can do with it.
Anyways, If you are interested in seeing what it can do, if you are curious, shoot me an email and I will gladly let you log into one of my networks to let you see it for yourself, I think you would be quite impressed with the possibilities. Best of all just like the software your using, it can be installed in a Windows Environment. My email is Matt@MattTheTech.net. Keep up the awesome work Paul!

PS. I used to use iSpy as well. It worked well, sort of, but I got sick of it crashing randomly, and the client was forced to pay that $12 monthly fee to be able to access remotely, and unfortunately remote access was shoddy.
With the XProtect setup you do not have to pay a monthly fee, and you can either just open a port on your router, or if you do it like we do in the Enterprise, you simply setup an IPSEC VPN on your network, and VPN in with your remote viewing device, whether that is a phone, tablet, laptop, or computer, and then you can access a Web interface to view the cameras. The awesome thing is it leverages the GPU or iGPU (Ryzen APU offloading is not yet compatible but I am hoping that will be coming in a future update) so it keeps both CPU usuage down on both the recording side, and the viewing side. If your cameras have PTZ, you can easily control the movement of your cameras through the browser interface, and even setup patrols. Really, anything you can think of, you can do. Anyways, would love to show you. Keep up the awesome content!

Paul has a unifi router doesn't he? Most other decent ones should have the capability even if not: manually assign the cameras to a different IP based on the MAC address. It makes them a lot easier to manage - something like 192.168.2.xx works well. Then you can access the web interface for configuration without finding the ip every time, and not worry about your NVR losing track of them. Ideally, you can also segregate them into their own VLAN with no internet access for security reasons - ip cameras are notoriously insecure.

Riser rated cable is required by code for running between floors. The cabe is self extinguishing in the event of fire(attempt to keep from spreading the fire). Plenum rated cable is for running in air handling areas, vents, ducts, above drop ceiling where that space is used for air return. When Plenum cable burns the fumes it gives off is not supposed to be toxic.

I set this up recently and have been loving it other than a few UI and configuration quirks. The built in web server is dead simple to set up and has a good UI as well so you don't need to worry about crushing your internet trying to dump a dozen video streams onto a cloud service.
I'd prefer a non Chinese camera but it seems like they all come from there anyway. I went with amcrest since they were on sale at Microcenter. They're on a separate VLAN with no WAN access, which in theory should stop any exploits or backdoors.
I also have it running on the same box as my NAS and media server via Proxmox, which I'd highly recommend you checking out Paul! Fun project.

Hey Paul, still learning myself about camera's but I do know about cabling. The reason there are two types, Plenum and Riser depends on the ceiling environment. Riser cable when it burns will let on gases, not great for human breathing..... Plenum doesn't. The other difference, Plenum is most of the times twice as expensive...:( In most home type environments, cabling will all be in the sheet rock ceiling , so riser can be used. Hope this helps, and keep up the great work!!!!

  • @TheR3lentlesss
    @TheR3lentlesss 4 года назад +4

    Paul,
I actually work in the security industry so this is one subject that I know very well.
Ok, first comment is regarding your switch. The one you showed only has 4 ports that are POE capable out of the 8. That said, you'd have to buy another switch (or poe injector) if you added a 5th POE camera.
Another note about the switch and network planning. Being a 10/100 switch you need to be careful about bandwidth bottlenecks. From the video I couldn't tell what the uplink port was but I'm assuming that it also was 10/100. You need to take into account the maximum bandwidth per camera. If you have 10 cameras that max out at 10mbps then you'll have issues.
My last comment is about ONVIF. You did say it correctly but one thing I wanted to add is that not all camera functionality is available via onvif or the rtsp stream. For example, depending in the video management software (vms) and/or camera, things like recording on motion or dewarping for 360° cameras won't always work.
If you want to chat more I'd be happy to help! 😁

I would suggest not keep the local IP addresses as "169.*.*.*" This "169" ip format is an indication of of an unavailable DHCP server and could cause conflict if you ever have an issue with your actual connected network because if your actual network fails with your ISP ect, the IP will default to 169.*.*.* It means, the computer is not connected properly to the network or the computer was not authorized to connect to the network. Just a tip from a networking nerd.

Blue Iris is very configurable. It can record constantly or only when motion is detected. It can send emails or text messages to one or more email addresses or phone numbers whenever there is motion. It has remote access server so you can easily monitor your cameras when you're away from your laptop or you mobile phone via their app. It does need a decent CPU but I think you already have that covered. Hey Paul. What I recently learned testing both Contacam and iSpy:
    - Contacam writes to system memory by default to show you a few seconds before a motion was detected. You can turn that off or reduce the bufferd seconds
    - iSpy can reduce video feed resolution and framerate in software to reduce system load. Contacam will use the IP-cameras setting (maybe that depends on the connection mode, but we are using the same it seems)
    - Contacam has way less CPU load in my case (when resolution and framerate is the same)
    - Configuration of motion detection areas in Contacam is really nice
    - Contacam is more stable
    - I have a yet unresolved problem with Contacam not recording smoothly in some instances. May very well be an I/O speed problem.

CMP/Plenum cable is just for air handling spaces. In residential, that would really only be necessary if you were travelling in air return ducts. CMR/Riser is the general in-wall cable. It's really not that expensive. In the past, I've found it to be cheaper than stranded patch cable (CMG) in some places. CMP plenum self extinguishes and doesn't produce toxic fumes when burned (why it's necessary if its in an air system. Riser rated cable will give off some nasty smoke, but won't keep burning or carry the fire with it, which is why its good for in-wall (and required in a lot of applications). Cheap patch cable (CM/CMG) isn't required to self extinguish. If they're exposed to fire, they can burn along and carry fire to other areas. Obviously, this isn't something you anticipate, but given that it's usually not any cheaper than CMR, I can't see any reason why not to have the proper cable installed.

Riser rated cable just means that it has a special fire rated jacket that will theoretically self extinguish and is meant to be run in non plenum(air handling areas) spaces such as in your walls while a plenum cable has a special jacket that is also self extinguishing and also does not emit any toxic smoke when burning since it is meant to go in areas that handle air such as ducts.

Cat5 riser is meant for running a wire through multiple levels of a building or home. Plenum wire has a different coating that is less toxic during a fire and is typically used when running above a drop ceiling or when you have to run a wire through air ducts. The only difference between cat5 and cat6 is the data flow and the twisting. Cat6 is kinda over kill for security cameras unless you are using it as a trunk wire connecting 10 or more cameras to another switch or NVR recorder.

Now that I know you're willing to branch out into different types of builds, not just gaming, I would love to see a modern build guide on a music editing and production rig. My brother is trying to get a head start on a career in music but is working on an old, out-of-spec machine and I would love to build something for him for when he discharges from the navy. I just don't have enough knowledge to make a real solid build for him and would love to see someone else with more experience walk through it.

I think I posted in the previous, but Wyze cams which can be four for $20-$25 have a firmware update that supports traditional IP cam usage and are great to drop around the house. Also I've had better luck with Blue Iris, I used iSpy for years and switched to Blue Iris and saw significantly less CPU usage. You do have to pay for it, but you can buy it once and as long as you don't care about support after a year or significant upgrades you won't have to pay again. Blue iris also has good android and iphone apps available. It is free to try for I think the first 10 days, it might be worth seeing if you get better CPU usage.
BUT on the noise/temps you might benefit from switching to the 120mm AIO that is supported with the Sentry 2.0. You can still fit a 3.5 inch drive where the GPU goes and a 2.5 can be mounted on the upper mount or double-sided sticky taped to the top of your hard drive if you want. That way you get better cooling without the noise. My security system uses the same cooler as you are using, but the noise isn't an issue because it is tucked away in our utility room. When I was testing it in my office, the noise drove me crazy when it ramped up
Also the other downside to the USB cameras, is they basically lead someone right back to the system which has the recordings of them breaking in. I would use extra webcams when we travel to keep an eye on the inside until we switched to the Wyze cams inside.

There's another reason to avoid USB - cable runs. Even Ethernet solutions use PoE. The downside of some PoE cameras is they cannot be on the same circuit as your UPS, rendering them useless in the event of a power outage.
Old Logitech solutions used Ethernet over AC - a total failure in terms of security. You had to manually get to each camera on the network and reconnect them at the camera end to work again after any type of power failure or scheduled outage. On the plus side they had amazing low light capabilities and the software wasn't terrible to use either.

11:14 If you want silicone washers to diminish vibration you have to put it inside, in between the drive and the case, because you want to dampen the drive's vibration and prevent it from vibrating the whole case, silicone on the screw on the outside won't do much if anything... For the best absorption, you can put it n both places.

Just curious, Paul. Are you diving into this project more as a learning/content experience as opposed to simply "I want this to work" experience? I'll admit I'm not as well-versed as others on security/surveillance, but surely there are several "plug and play" options here that, for lack of a better term, "just work". As opposed to your path of using non-security-centric components like webcams and a dedicated PC and the hurdles that have to be overcome to get those all playing nicely and reliably. That being said, I'm definitely enjoying learning along with you about this stuff even though I don't have an overwhelming need for this (I live in an apartment). Looking forward to the next steps and what the final result will be like!

Riser cable and plenum cable have more to do with what sort of atmosphere they are in. Riser cable is more general use while Plenum is required by code in office spaces where the cold air return is just above the ceiling tiles. Riser is perfectly fine for use in a house, even an attic. Plenum is better but more expensive. Neither is out door rated.

Use a Hikvision NVR (your camera's are rebranded Hikvision ONVIF). Built in POE, purpose built to handle cameras, no licensing fees, 1/4 of the cost of your PC, can provide network segmentation because of the built in switch, and plenty of other reasons. Also use IVMS 4200 for your viewing software.

Pah, you shouldn't listen to anyone that say they are an expert in Surveillance. GEnerally, their knowledge is based on bias and overselling. You don't need a lot of cameras in a home even. You need strategically placed cameras that does its purpose.
For example, if I were to install those cameras at home, in Sweden. Most of the install would be illegal externally. Because those camers you have, don't have the focal adjustment needed for privacy protection. Nor do I need several cameras in a home, since if someone were to break into my home, they would probably go for the more valuable room and then disperse from it, so two cameras is all you need for recording purposes. Because once they do a break in, they probably will go for the whole house.
Among other things. Not to mention, doesn't matter what kind of camera you use where I live for evidence. As long you can prove something with it. It is like saying, a smartphone's video recording isn't a viable source of evidence of someone beating a dog. Albeit a webcam is typically superior to a smartphone camera.

When doing installs like this, you should always check your local laws before proceeding.
In the USA, unless there's a city ordinance or something specific to your local area, all surveillance is legal as long as it's installed on your property and isn't blatantly violating your neighbors' privacy (such as pointing it directly at a neighbor's bedroom window). Public areas (sidewalks, streets, etc.) are, by law, allowed to be recorded as you do not have any right to privacy in public here.

14:15 -- Paul that is incorrect. PIs can be used with PoE 802.3af standard, but to enable this feature you need a "HAT" add on to the GPIO pins.
This feature is only available on the 3B+ and the 4B
Doing this will allow you to use USB cameras with a PI over PoE.

Motioneyeos is great for Pi's is also great. Something you need to understand when using motioneyeos is that it is a OPERATING SYSTEM not just a software you instal. That tripped me up when installed my pi cams.

Reolink app and external connection is possible (might want to setup your FW if you don't want it, not an issue if you don't setup internet connectivity). Supports ONVIF for recording and remote management (compatible with Synology Surveillance Station). Also works with PoE.

One of my good friends owns a surveillance CCTV company. I was just asking him the other night about the drives they use. They DON'T use the WD purple HDD because they are only 5400 rpm vs the WD black HDD which are 7200 rpm which they DO use, the purple HDD doesn't read as fast when you're trying to review footage. Also DON'T get cheap cameras with a plastic housing, they'll BURN UP within a couple years! Get cameras with an Aluminum housing, because the metal housing acts as a heat sink for the electronics inside making them last a LOT longer! You're basically building a "server" too, so don't cheap out on the PSU which has to run 24/7.

Someone's probably already pointed this out, but unless you have several TB of SSD storage, i advise against using SSD for momentary video, I've written ~16TB of video this month to my array of spinning rust, Also, i dont know if you know already, but that 8 port POE switch, only has 4x POE ports as indicated by the "POE" brackets around the first 4 ports, I have a similar switch with 8xPOE and 8X non POE, 2 SFP(non plus) and a serial port(serial over RJ45)
I prefer to have my server manage motion capture because then i can set the zone for motion detect, and a minimum and maximum threashold for motion, for instance, i dont want the IRcut filter moving out of the way to cause a false recording, so i set the maximum to 95% motion detect, and i dont want an ant crawling across the floor to set it off either, so i set it at 5% inside, and almost 30% outside(were i'm looking for cars in a speciffic zone)
Does iSpy have a fee now? i've never payed for it
