An even cheaper option that’s available now that wasn’t 6 years ago is an ESP32 with a built in camera module, you can get them for like $8. Honestly if they were gonna make another guide that’s the way to go.
Thanks for vids like this. Tired of some many things turning into a "service" that requires a monthly payment when the tech is there to make it affordable. That's the whole point of technology, to make things easier and cheaper.
I’m not gonna lie, our family has a nest cam, and I can fully understand your issue. It costs too much on its own, and that subscription shouldn’t be a thing. It’s literally just a camera that records footage in your device, hell, you may as well just use your phone or tablet! So to anyone reading this, DON’T. BUY. A. NEST. CAM.
Local storage is often expensive (NAS ONLINE 24/7 365) failed drives or failed nas or even a stolen nas. Plus it's a hassle to check to make sure it's still working or hasn't recorded over something as space runs out.
# Yeah until somebody steals the camera taking any recorded footage along with it... It kind of defeats the purpose of having a security camera if the footage is stored in the camera and the camera is somewhere the burglar could just walk off with it.
elmateo77 of course, but ideally you should have both. One for easy access, and another online. The issue is when Google offers free/cheap cloud storage space, why would you bother with a subscription for dedicated cloud storage
Or...One can buy a 4+ camera system which includes DVR and live access through the net. Starting at around $200. The DVR's can usually store up to 30 days of continuous video. No subscription needed. On top of that, one can put the DVR where ever they see fit as to not be found. Some are even wireless. And in conjunction with a dummy box, intruders would have a hard time stealing the footage. The owner of a store I used to work for got one of these. I was able to monitor graveyard employees in real time as well as hear anything going on because it had mics also.

If you guys are actually looking for home cams, Wyze Cams are great $20 ($30 variant with rotation as well) cameras with night vision as well. It's 1080p with great quality for the price. It's made by ex-amazon employees I think, so they know a lot about what's needed and not needed in a product. It's cheap enough to be replaceable, and good enough to have for a long time. Great present too. You can definitely buy a bunch and place them everywhere. Idk who's gonna see this 11 months after, but if you do. Hey.
@@ThatRedMonkay Chances are, if you are unable to find them on Amazon where you live, you'll be unable to get them unless you use a company like Shipito. At this point, you'll have to spend quite a bit on shipping. Sorry.
Out of the two I find Yi cams to be a nicer option. Wireless isn't really a necessity for me and just a bonus. Would you recommend any other cameras as Yi cams only support 32gb of storage and their Yi cams 2 are sold out which also only support 64g of storage. Also any cameras that would give me active notifications if they detect any motion? Some cameras let you setup their motion sensing area in their softwares. Was wondering that as well :)
Arlo are expensive but there's no charge for storing up to 7 days of footage in the cloud , you can also hook up a USB dongle for local storage (in case internet is down), and you can also download the footage to your PC or device to save it off if it's important footage.
JustMHMD I'm just quoting an article: "In a tweet earlier this week, RUclips confirmed that it is “currently experimenting with how to show content in the subs feed.” Rather than displaying subscriptions chronologically, RUclips explained, it found that “a personalized order” governed by an algorithm made some viewers more likely to click play - or, as the company puts it, “able to more easily find the videos they want to watch.”" So yea, RUclips is now officially dead to me
Thanks for the detail Rokas. Totally bullshit! Why would I subscribe to a channel if I didn't want to see their content?! Such a stupid and unnecessary change. Going to make this website useless to me if they screw up the subs feed.
Wow same thing happened to me. I read all the articles on what RUclips was doing with the feed. Didn’t actually think it would happen to me. RUclips sucks
I didn't realize that the Nest cams didn't have a local storage option. It's this dependence on subscription services for basic functionality of a product that has really soured the consumer electronics market in the past decade.

Check out the Wyze cams. they are only $20 and work great. I had concidered Pis but for $20 with 2 way audio, nightvision, a decent app, and it works with ifttt
I work with Raspberry Pi's a lot and needed a camera to keep tabs on my dog. I was going to build this same thing but saw the Wyze cam for $20. Saved me all the tinkering time and it works perfectly. I've also set up an Arlo system which is like $400 for a camera (and home station which it requires), these aren't directly comparable as the Arlo are wireless and outdoor ready, but as for software the Wyze app is much better than Arlo. There are more customization options on the Wyze and the video delay is very small (delay on Arlo can be like 4 seconds).
Yeah - I was wondering about build cost + time in regard to how much $$ you really save building this setup yourself. While it can be more fun to build something, you open yourself up to potential hours of troubleshooting. I was beginning to wonder about the cost of this setup versus a complete Chinesium camera set + built-in DVR from Wish or AliExpress - but then he said "No Audio" and "No mobile interface", and that makes the Chinesium setups look like the better deal. Granted, you may still be stuck with several hours of troubleshooting due to poor documentation and the odd way the menus and symbiotic settings are set up in the cheap Chinese systems, but if it gives you the audio AND the ability to control and watch via your smart phones, it's a no-brainer. The storage on them is usually limited, but so long as you can connect to a NAS or even an external HDD, that limitation can be easily and cheaply overcome. Having dealt with extracting evidence from security systems before, the audio can sometimes be crucial for identification purposes when you don't get a perfect face-on shot of the perp. In another scenario, if you are reviewing an incident between employees, video alone doesn't tell the whole story, and sometimes who actually said what can be the difference between who remains employed and who gets fired, and an audio recording of the incident cuts out the "he said/she said" element of any disagreement or argument between employees.
Just buy any ONVIF-compatible IP camera and use your PC, NAS or dedicated NVR to store recordings without paying any fees. This is going to be even cheaper (720p IP cameras are about $15 from china, NVR is about $40 if you need it) than setting up a bunch of raspberries and whatnot and take a lot less time.
2:00 Me : Linus, what ripped your shirt? Linus : it is not question what or who ripped my shirt but the question is who will rip you if you don't use private internet access
Also, there are 2 variants of the official camera, standard and Noir. Noir has the infrared filter removed so it can be used in conjunction with an infrared light to get nighttime footage. The downside is that daytime shots will have a reddish hue to them. I am using a Pi zero W to build a wildlife cam, pretty interesting to mess around with.
The raspberry pi is amazing. There are so many free and open source libraries to do all sorts of things, from remotely controlling a 3D printer to using it as a security system.
Please don't be that guy. RUclips allows user to see how many viewers watch the video at a specific time. I'm pretty sure the sponsor will look up to that number. They only pay linus for the amount of viewers that watch the video at that specific time. Be nice, we love this channel anyway.
Yes, I do refer to linus that he able to get that number. And there will be high possibility the sponsor require that number in order to determine how much money they need to pay them to advertise their product in this video. I do agree that linus won't share anything unnecessary data with the client unless it is somewhat related to their contract.
Roun Dair it’s because you watch popular and predictable youtube channels based on your watch habits. eventually, you’re going to see people with similar watch profiles to you like Justin Y. just watch videos that have less than 100,000 views as well as to view the videos within 12 hours of release
For some reason RUclips decided that this video should not be in my sub-box. I have even activated notifications and I did not even get one of those. Why RUclips? Why?
I built one of these 4 years ago. Same idea but on the pi 3 because the pi 0 didn't exist. And using Raspbian because there weren't any distros for it at the time. 4 years later, still running amazingly

Yes because I’m sure someone down in the big corporate office of nest really gives a shit about what your eating for dinner or how many times you scratch your balls throughout the day. If only you knew how much info google or amazon has on you probably wouldn’t give a shit about a simple cloud
@@crazycarl00 do you own a smartphone and/or computer? If so, your already under constant surveillance. Adding a couple more cameras probably won't make a diff. But I get what you mean.

Most anyone does too you is sell what sites you go too, what types of things you buy to sell to advertising agencies.
Did this a few years ago and it is awesome! I even receive Gmail alerts when motion is detected by my camera. I also used a similar setup for my bird feeder, making bird watching super easy.
The whole point of more expensive security cameras in the first place is to be plug and play, and although the raspberry pi DIY security cameras are way less expensive they require way more time setting them up and don't have the familiar face detection that the nest subscription comes with, or the easy to use app that allows you to go through days of footage and easily find what you are looking for.
That can all be done by running Blue Iris on a dedicated Windows server. All you need is a reliable video feed. Sure it's an extra machine, but you were going to do that anyway, right?
Went down the Nest Rabbit Hole, I'm now in therapy. I'm told I'm making progress now (this part was Humor). I just don't understand the whole "Nest" philosophy. I admit I'm not a cell phone person. I've been working on a supposedly enterprise level system , but, it ain't gonna happen with nest. Just wasted two weeks of time for two IT persons (this was management pushing the "Nest" cameras). I'm stopping here before I get labeled as a "Ranter" .
All of the features mentioned by you here could be done with free softwares like Agent DVR or Contacam or paid ones like Blue Iris and offers more options. The plug and play can be easily done by just getting some cheaper IP cams instead of Rpi they used which is what you'd go for if you're not massively tech savvy. Or you can get an ESP32 and just flash stuff and done, or pay someone for that. Not only is that significantly cheaper. It's also superior and more customizable
Rachid HF - you won't immediately have a problem if you just dunked it in pure water, but metals will still disolve from the board over time. It's still water, and will still corrode.
Just to add a little that has changed over time. Nest has now been bought by google in 2014 and no longer is per camera subscription, it app is still not the best but is being merged into google home. It is now worth looking into for home security, especially since some devices can double up with other functionality.
There needs to be a Part 2 to this. Quality looked fine for lighted/daylight recording - but what about night time, darker recordings - and IR? Security recordings don't just end when the sun goes down!
Those funky eyes on either side of the white 3D printed mounted camera are the IR lamps for that camera. There's a version of the pi camera that has no IR filter. But it looks awful on daylight. The perfect opportunity for DIYers (like most of the RPi community) to work on a mechanically actuated IR filter that retracts when light hits some sensor.
in theory a raspberry pi could be used for 2 way audio also, but this would involve additional equipment and additional cost as well as a means of real time monitoring (I believe someone in the comments already commented on the software now having a mobile app)
one of my biggest grimes with home security cameras, is the atrocious resolution and the advertised make believe resolution they claim. we ended up getting one of the cheapest and nastiest knock offs due to this, and while the day time quality isn't great, but night quality is surprisingly excellent. for lowering home insurance, it's worth every cent. and I can see who's approaching the house. we got an 8 camera system for AU$ 300 and can cover pretty much every side of the house and yard. and most surprisingly, the software is pretty decent, has apps for android and ios, and the PC software allows it's own separate recording per PC. it's advertised in ALDI and dicksmith and jaycar so not hard to find. be interesting to hook up a decent camera to test the hardware of the main box, but haa money..
Great video. I'd really love to see the written guide, and also, it'd be super cool to see a replacement for the "Ring video doorbell pro" which has a similar business model to Nest (FUCKED!), but makes super sweet doorbell cameras. Basically; the difference would be the Ring uses DC straight from the doorbell wiring, and we'd need to figure out a way to wire up a transmitter/receiver capable of providing signal to both mechanical and digital doorbells. I don't think it'd be too hard to do, and improve upon greatly, their design leaves a lot to be desired as is. The potential application of a camera built in to the button would be a good starting place, or even upgrading the infrared night vision to a better IR emitter, or even one you could mount in better locations than directly under the camera. Although my knowledge of wifi protocols/signal transmission and programming is limited, I'm certified to work with DC electronics, and I'd be happy to work with you guys on this if you want an extra set of hands. I'm a little irritated with Ring. Regardless, hit me back on here if you end up doing anything with this! Thanks for all the information over the years! Also, Linus, you need a new shirt.
Willy Steinhart Christopher Willis RUclips would prefer you watch jack Paul or whatever his name is, that’s why my Friend and also google owns nest egg
but if someone were to rob your house, and take the computers, how do you set up the server so that you can retrieve footage? Can you build a silent Raspberry Server/Media box somewhere to hold footage? I would probably bolt it to the ceiling of a utility room/closet, passively cooled if possible.
I think he mentioned that you can back the data into your own cloud storage of choice (like google drive or whatever). Given the size of a Pi server, if you went that route; it could be easily hidden in most homes. It only has to be hidden to prevent quick find in most cases (unless it's an unusual type of break-in/kidnap etc.); I would usually consider some type of offsite backup of the data. I've used several methods in the past myself. One can keep a cloud copy of recent events, but sometimes have a server somewhere else (at work, or at a friend or relative's house, and set up a connection over the internet). You could also keep the feeds accessible on your smartphone.
@@plotprogressorb8662 - but remember to have a backup power-supply for these type of installs. If the site is being directly attacked seriously; it's quite likely they might tamper with power or connectivity. Make sure of battery backup and alternate comms (mobile data perhaps)?
You could also use webcams with USB to RJ45 extensors and a USB hub. If you want outdoors nightvision, you buy those IR reflectors and pair it with a photoelectric sensor, to turn on on low daylight. Most webcams have attached microphones so you have audio as well.
I call BS on lowering insurance rates. I told my insurance had security cameras and I asked if I could get a discount they actually raise my rates because my security system was worth $5,000. They raise my rates by $10 a month.

Tiago Lopes RUclips has been “tweaking” the sub box recently.
Same for me. RUclips decides way too much what I should watch.
Same here... i saw it on the sidebar while watching an other video but not in my sub box

I didn't realize that the Nest cams didn't have a local storage option. It's this dependence on subscription services for basic functionality of a product that has really soured the consumer electronics market in the past decade.

Check out the Wyze cams. they are only $20 and work great. I had concidered Pis but for $20 with 2 way audio, nightvision, a decent app, and it works with ifttt
ty i was looking for some recommendations. I dont have the time to build one hehe.
I see yi 1080 home camera for about $20-30 on ebay which also has micro sd storage. I have 4 now.
There are more customization options on the Wyze and the video delay is very small (delay on Arlo can be like 4 seconds).
yi has access to all your camera footage....

I didn’t receive this in the sub box either. However, it was in the Home section, which is dodgy at best.
Any tips how i can set up those cameras outside?

Also, there are 2 variants of the official camera, standard and Noir. Noir has the infrared filter removed so it can be used in conjunction with an infrared light to get nighttime footage. The downside is that daytime shots will have a reddish hue to them. I am using a Pi zero W to build a wildlife cam, pretty interesting to mess around with.

RUclips only allows this to the uploader and Linus probably doens't share his youtube account
Exactly when I did that.
Yes, I do refer to linus that he able to get that number. You guys should do your own original diy project on a specific tech and it would be intriguing.
Can y'all make an updated diy home security series?
Nice video, Linus! Especially with Ed Sheeran in the video! Wow!
Hey Linus, how about watercooling a Raspberry Pi?
Now that's overkill - I want to see it.
Use demineralized water and you wont have any problem
Rachid HF - you won't immediately have a problem if you just dunked it in pure water, but metals will still disolve from the board over time. It's still water, and will still corrode.
or submerge that whole thing in oil xD
LN2 overclock one!
Just to add a little that has changed over time. Nest has now been bought by google in 2014 and no longer is per camera subscription, it app is still not the best but is being merged into google home. It is now worth looking into for home security, especially since some devices can double up with other functionality.
Still don't want clouds watching me. Creepy hackers 😝
this is why the raspberry pie so amazing there so many projects you can do with it. Security, fun activitys and so much more.
There needs to be a Part 2 to this. Quality looked fine for lighted/daylight recording - but what about night time, darker recordings - and IR? Security recordings don't just end when the sun goes down!
I think his studio has security lights at night.
Security lights? I think you missed the point of what I was asking.
Just add a cheap IR light.
This would help: blog.ligos.net/2016-04-18/Day-Night-Cycle-For-MotionEye.html

The last thing a drug dealer wants is cctv with cloud storage enabled ;-)
but if someone were to rob your house, and take the computers, how do you set up the server so that you can retrieve footage?
Can you build a silent Raspberry Server/Media box somewhere to hold footage? I would probably bolt it to the ceiling of a utility room/closet, passively cooled if possible.
Tungsten Wall well if you have built your own server then yes
