Mario because Red could have some awesome moments where he uses Pokemon to his advantage like Link used the grappling hook. Not to mention, everybody else gets advantages. Sonic with super speed, Mega man can climb on walls, etc. Also, Mario was a sore loser.
(Edit: For those of you who keep saying "He could've used climb!" He either didn't bring his Pokemon and maybe could bring them in the next episode, which would be awesome, or he chose not to thus the swag glasses.)

I was going to edit something like that, but I was too lazy. I think it would be funny if he walked in the next episode holding pokeballs and then uses the pokemon in the games because he didn't bring them in this. Idk that's what I think should happen if Mario dies.
He also could've use a Pokemon with rock climb! He's either stupid or didn't bring any. Heck they could've played it like he used teleport and the last pokecenter he visited was up the hill.

Just to be clear with the debate between Mario and Red
Mario has finished the race in first place, but he did not do anything to help Red. I mean, there is no rules concerning team cooperation, Mario could just have jumped holding Red and throwing him to the the top of the cliff.
Red could not climb because of Pokemon rules. He can only move from right to left, but never jump (except if there is a little fence) , nor climb. By the way, the HM08 Rock climb did not exist in the first generation, so it would not be Red's fault, would it? I admit that he could have used its pokemon, but I still wonder why he did not do so...
I'm just trying to sum up the main ideas, let's see next week, who's gonna be executed...
