I lived in that apartment building when they filmed the movie. During the scene where Daniel and his mom first arrive and he's taking his bike off the car, I was standing on my balcony (says "South" on it). I had been watching them rehearse the scene a few times. When the director said he was ready to shoot, I asked if I should go back inside. He said no, it was okay if I stayed and watched. I wouldn't be seen. And yes, the wooden front gate was just installed for the movie. It was a metal gate before and after.

I live on Long Island NY and see "Daniel" Ralph Machio at the NY Islanders hockey games all the time. He's a big fan of the team. Most nights he's just walking around the arena like everyone else is. Very cool dude. He was also a great soccer player in the 80s growing up on Long Island, which is why in the movie he's juggling the ball very well.
Great video bro! I actually didn't know that they filmed those scenes at the chatsworth reservoir lol I lived right down the street from it for almost 20 years lol

Superb effort in putting this video together, really appreciate it. I stayed at that Hyatt Regency back in 2013 taking some personal time in So Cal. Just looked through some of my pics to confirm.. Unreal....

Loved this video. Is a very warm feeling. I'm from Spain and these locations were so special to me because they were so north american, a place I wanted to visit in the 80's. This movie will always be so magical to me.
Wow so many details that I never noticed before good job! Thanks! I was a kid when this came out and had not been to a beach yet. I was so in love with beaches because of this movie! I have since been to Hawaii and all of the popular beaches of California and Florida. But I first saw the beach in this movie!
Great video! I used to be a long distance truck driver. During mid October 2016 I found myself with a couple days layover in Ontario, California. So I rented a car and visited a bunch of these locations. That had always been a dream of mine! I was 38 years old at the time. I'll be 43 in a week so I guess it's been 5 years ago now. South Seas: There was still an empty lot next door when I was there. The entire apartment building smelled like marijuana really bad and it didn't seem like anyone there spoke English. Lol! The beach: Yeah that was cool to visit. I walked up to the lifeguard tower and watched surfers for a while. The high school: Definitely visited there and saw the sign on the wall. I walked up and touched it with my hands because I just had to. I drove around the block and saw the fields out back. I wish I would have visited his locker. That's definitely a regret. From what I understand that school was also used for the movie Summer School which is another movie I loved. The dojos: I visited both locations. The exterior shots/Orient express location as well as the location of the interior shots which was being used as an exercise place. Orient Express was vacant. Ali's house: I drove past, but didn't get out of the car. It felt really weird driving in an area like that in a piece of junk rental car. I can assure you nobody else in that neighborhood was driving a VW Jetta. But that gate wasn't in front of their house in 2016. There isn't anywhere to park other than in someone's driveway or in front of someone's house. So I didn't get out and walk around people's homes. And I don't think people should really. Golf n Stuff: I believe my visit to this place was at an earlier time. I don't think it was during the same trip. But I played some games and a round of miniature golf with the guy I drove truck with. I don't think he understood the significance of the location. But they had a small poster or something on the wall near the cash registers with pictures and stuff from the movie. I didn't visit the other sites you mentioned, but I did add one location. The bonsai store: From Karate Kid 3. I saw the railroad tracks where Mike Barnes and his buddies were doing donuts in the road and were almost hit by a train. So in total I visited 8 locations. Very happy memory.
Sounds like an awesome adventure. I'm the same age and would definitely enjoy looking at the locations. The apartment smelling like weed made me think there probably wasn't anyone around to reminisce about the movie.
@Adam Chapman it's very strange man. All of my favorite movies from my youth straight up lied to me. And I didn't know any better because I was just some kid living on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Think about all of the movies and TV shows from the 80's that took place in certain locations. For example the movies set in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. The demographics in those movies looked just like the demographics in my small town. Then I get there and I'm the only non-hispanic white dude for miles. It makes perfect sense to me now, but as a kid I had no idea. It's like Seinfeld. Set in NYC and not a single ethnic character. I just think that's kinda funny, but I think it makes some people really mad. Lol! But no, nobody there talks about those movies. In fact they're annoyed by tourists stopping by their apartment building to pose for pictures. They even put a gate up so people can't walk in by the swimming pool and stuff now. When you think about it, those are just financially poor folks living in Reseda just working and trying to keep up with the ridiculous cost of living in SoCal. They really don't want to be bothered.
@danielmoore1232 You bring up a good point. I didn't think about Hollywood bringing in their white cast of stars to these areas. I always assumed the demographic of the neighborhoods changed over time haha. The only movie location I wanted to see was "The last dragon" 1985. I was out in New York in 2018 visiting friends and time slipped by and I didn't get to see filming locations. I'm assuming Brooklyn will be primarily black neighborhood like movie but now I'm not sure lol. Please tell me you have seen the last dragon filming locations in Brooklyn?
@Adam Chapman yeah it's possible some of the demographics in the Valley changed over time. I'm not sure to what degree. But if that's the reason for the almost exclusively white casting in 80's teen movies like Karate Kid, Summer School, etc then it has REALLY changed over the past 30-40 years. But yeah that's possible. And unfortunately I never found myself with any time to do any exploring in New York City. I did drive a truck through Manhattan and drove right past the coffee shop restaurant from Seinfeld. It's much smaller than the show makes it look. I always wished for a layover in Atlanta. I wanted to go visit locations from the first season of the Dukes of Hazzard. The town square from the opening credits, which I hear looks very similar still today. The Boar's Nest which I hear is a church now, and maybe the exterior shots of the Sheriff's office. Just stuff like that. But unfortunately I'm a local truck driver now. I've not left Ohio for like 6 years at this point. I'm just old and fat now. No more exploring for me I guess.
I need to do the same. I still live on Saticoy, but on the other side of The Valley near Lankershim. & I want to visit Ohio & be the only Latino in town 😅
Wow that was awesome it takes me back when I was a young lad. Thanks for sharing. Now my kids know about the Karate kid movies and they love them, specially the early ones

Haha thank you! I think that was the start of me letting my wacky side out. Thank you
Agreed. This was really fun. Very well done video. Thanks! It adds so much that you spliced video with the actual movie.
Subscribed! Thanks so much for the excellent video and comparison! Man I miss the 80s
Thank you so much
All these videos you have made are great, I grew up in the 80s and 90s watching all the big Hollywood movies and tv series and was always in awe.
its great seeing the locations of all my fav movies, When I eventually am able to visit LA I would love to hire you as a tour guide as I can't imagine the commercial guides doing a better job than this!
Thank you so much. Giving people personal tours in the future would be awesome.
What an absolute joyful trip back to 1984. Thank you!👏🏻
This is by far one of the best filming location video's I've watched. This video was very well put together. Great job! 👍
Thank you you!! I really appreciate that
That was absolutely awesome. Thank you so much for creating this and sharing it
I live on Long Island NY and see "Daniel" Ralph Machio at the NY Islanders hockey games all the time. He's a big fan of the team. Most nights he's just walking around the arena like everyone else is. Very cool dude. He was also a great soccer player in the 80s growing up on Long Island, which is why in the movie he's juggling the ball very well.
That's really cool
No way!!! Awesome!!!
Thanks so much for the videos/reliving the Karate Kid. What a masterpiece of a movie that is and was.
Great video bro! I actually didn't know that they filmed those scenes at the chatsworth reservoir lol I lived right down the street from it for almost 20 years lol
Yeah, That was actually a new discovery for me as well
I ENJOYED your documentary on the filming locations of the original Karate Kid. Hope to visit some of these locations one day. THANKS for sharing.
As someone really into urban geography, these videos are fascinating... you can see just how much and how little everyday spaces actually change. Thanks for all this work! My suggestion for another would be Beverly Hills Cop! EDIT: Just saw you DID BHC, heh.
Great idea!! Please do BEVERLY HILLS COP!! @80s Life
Well done my friend! Thanks so much for the tour!
Thank you!
Ahh! You were in town where I live now! Westlake Village! Come on by next time. Thanks for another great episode!
🙂 my pleasure. Thanks for watching
Superb effort in putting this video together, really appreciate it. I stayed at that Hyatt Regency back in 2013 taking some personal time in So Cal. I am a huge fan of the movie and Cobra Kai, and had NO IDEA that hotel doubled as the Encino Oaks Country Club until literally this very second, nearly 10 years after I stayed there. Just looked through some of my pics to confirm.. Unreal....
Nice work! It is SO COOL to be at the same location where someone was once physically present! I'm not only a movie fan, but a history fan in general, and I think about that kind of stuff when visiting historical sites. From this video I think you may have the same fascination as me lol 😂
Just found your channel it's Totally Awesome 🎉 you do amazing research.
Awesome footage loved 80s
Thank you. Me too
Thanks for putting so much care and detail in this! This really bright back some great memories!
You lined up the Shots perfectly. Good job.👍
Thank you very much
Loved watching it, takes me down to memory lanes.
Very good video. I enjoyed it all the way through. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this for us. Looking forward to more then/ now filming location videos from you.
Thank you so much
Excellent! You answered some long looming questions that I had about several of the filming locations, thank you!
“One of his many temper tantrums”. 🤣🤣🤣 Great video bro.
Haha. Thank you!
Men i love your 80s Life channel. Its so great to remember when i was a Teenager. 🙂
Thank you so much for watching
saw a new upload and it brought a smile to my face
Thank you!
This is so cool you took the time to do this video! Great job man!
Grew up on this movie! I once visited these apartments a couple years ago while working in the valley
Love your vids! What's the address of Daniel's house? Thanks
Thank you. I put the address on screen
Did it feel great being there mate
Thank you sooooooooo much for taking the time and effort to put this little 💎 together - your superimposed face over daniels on the 🏖️ was hillstbluesarious!!!
Haha. Thank you. I really appreciate it
I never realized Daniel got jumped right behind his home
I went through that feeling years ago.. never forgot feeling that.
Yeah I always wondered how Miyagi knew where to come and save him. Makes total sense now.
Was thinking that
He didn't get jumped. He got disciplined the Cobra Kai way
@@SALTER818 Damn..What happened..If you don’t Mind me asking??
Loved this video. Is a very warm feeling. I'm from Spain and these locations were so special to me because they were so north american, a place I wanted to visit in the 80's. This movie will always be so magical to me.
Good job in explaining the whole terrain. Very informative and cool.
Thank you
Wow so many details that I never noticed before good job! Thanks! I was a kid when this came out and had not been to a beach yet. I was so in love with beaches because of this movie! I have since been to Hawaii and all of the popular beaches of California and Florida. But I first saw the beach in this movie!
That's awesome. Thank you so much for watching
Really good break down explanations and images of scenes seen in the movie.
Thank you
Excellent job on this video. You really did your homework, especially in finding Mr. Miyagi's home. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I was 10 when this came out, one of the few 80s movie I sadly missed at the theatre.
We are the same age,i must've lucked out and bribed somebody i did see it in the theater haha.
@@jazzyjeff7431 A lot relied on your parents and I do not think this flick attracted much attention. I saw countless movies underage because I was accompanied by one or two parents. Sudden Impact was an 18 certificate in the UK and I sneaked in with my dad when I was 10. Go figure.
@@Truthseeker1515 Yes that is very true.I thought Karate Kid was popular right from the start here in the US but i can't really remember. If it had anything to do with karate or ninjas,i had to see it.
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
Here in Brazil, Karatê kid maked my youth and more👏🏼👏🏼🇧🇷🇧🇷🇺🇸👏🏼👏🏼
That was cool! Great job on the video. Its awesome to see not much has changed.
Thank you!!
I love this! Thank you! I used to work close to the apartment location on 19223 Saticoy Street. I would have a "Hollywood/80's" moment whenever I would drive by on my way to work!
It's amazing how easily recognizable these locations are.
Very cool and thanks for sharing this. Loved this movie and very interesting to see where all this was filmed.
My pleasure. Thank you!
I’ve spent many nights at that Golf N Stuff. Awesome work, dude.
Thank you!
Hey this is a amazing video!!!Thanks for re-filming the original parts of the movie "Karate Kid" and showing us the before and after! Fantastic work!!!!!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
@@80sLifeYou're very welcome!!
Loved this movie a favorite for sure. Legend status
