    *~ Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand were talent phenomena's; two of the top & greatest popular singers of the 20th century with massive appeal, that other singers emulated; both gifted actresses with movie careers that earned huge box office success. (Barbra Streisand is STILL the highest selling female pop singer, pre-digital, in the US. Her 1st movie, "FUNNY GIRL" earned Barbra her 1st Oscar for Best Actress, and was the highest grossing film of 1968) ...Great Reaction, J ~*

      *~ Interesting side note: Since you made reference to the TV film, "LIFE WITH JUDY: Me and My Shadow", Judy Davis was born on April 23 - Judy Garland's extraordinary Carnegie Hall concert (and then a hugely successful album that won 4 Grammys) was performed on April 23. ~*

    Thanks for this video. I love your enthusiasm. There have been so many covers of this duet, but the original with Barbra and Judy will never be matched. Barbra was just making a name for herself at this time and Judy saw her perform and thought she was wonderful. It is a testament to her selflessness that she invited Barbra on her show to help give her more exposure. It was Judy’s idea to sing this duet. She took Mel Torme (the arranger of her special material on her show) into her dressing room and put on Barbra’s record of ‘happy days’ and started to sing get happy in counter point to it. Torme was astounded by her natural instinct. The duet remains one of the highlights of the tv series. I have heard it so many times but it still gives me goosebumps. BTW, I totally agree that the miniseries was the best biopic of Judy. Tammy Blanchard was a dead ringer for the young Judy. The best thing that they did was to use Judy’s own voice.

    I'm as choked up as you are. This is one of my favorites. I love how supportive Judy was of Barbra, who must have been terrified, since she suffered from stage fright. You should watch Barbra's solo version of "Happy Days Are Here Again" sometime. That was the song that launched her career. And sometime you should check out the video of Judy's daughter Liza Minelli performing "Mein Herr" from "Cabaret," with choreography by Bob Fosse.

    • @JeffBazell
      @JeffBazell Год назад +1

      Barbra is on record saying she didn't have stage fright at that time. She was still in the excitement, "I'm gonna show you" era. She got stage fright after she famously forgot the lyrics to 3 songs when she performed in Central Park, June 1967. She only sang if the lyrics were on cue cards and later, teleprompters. Her stage fright pretty much vanished after 1994. Then it was fun for her.

    A wonderful reaction to a piece of classic TV history! Both ladies were nominated for Emmy awards for this episode of "The Judy Garland Show". Judy was 41. Barbra was 21 and about to star in "Funny Girl" on Broadway. The rest, as they say... BTW, you don't have to go far for more. They did another duet (a playful medley, "Hooray For Love") and Barbra did two solos--"Down With Love"* and a pristine version of the classic "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered". Enjoy! 😊✌️

    Barbra--aside from everything else she is--has been so lucky. To come along at a time when she could sing with Judy, Louis Armstrong, Donna Summer, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Neil Diamond, Barry Gibb, Tony Bennett, Andrea Bocelli, the list goes on. Of course if she hadn't been great, none of these people would have wanted to sing with her. This duet, however, is in a class of it's own: One of the most wonderful pop music moments in history. It's fun to watch newbies react to it.

    She later said that this performance was the passing of the torch . She and Streisand…….the two greatest pure singer of all time. I went to every Garland performance when she came to NY, and then the same for Streisand. Their voices are unique , both are singers who embody the story of the song. I wish Christina Aguilera would watch this, she has the pipes but too often engages in vocal gymnastics ( showing off her range) and sacrifices the meaning and poignancy of the lyrics. This is why Garland and Streisand are the best of the best.

    This song actually came out during the Great Depression of the 1930s. It’s suppose to be a song of irony. Happiness occurring during economic destruction (i.e. “……happy days are here again!…….shout hallelujah…..”). Their intro of loving and hating eachother was appropriate.
