  • Do we really understand what LOVE is? Could we be mistaken? Do we confuse love with other emotions that are actually selfish in nature? Is love something we can acquire from others, something we can possess, something we can lose? Let's explore this word 'Love' and how we use it, and see if we can deepen our understanding.

@@rickki6 I too was where you are now. In one of my tearful prayers to Spirit I asked it to be shown, to be taught how to love others and myself. I did not love anything much less myself. In time Spirit answered my prayer...be patient, ask to be taught, to be shown How To Love Yourself... loving others will come Namaste

I am a strong believer of unconditional love . I have loved and lost in life expecting love - but I found solace when I learnt to love unconditionally. One loves the self first and then sees the reflection in the person they love )

I am afraid that human love is not unconditional. Love is not always a good thing. It can be a very life damaging emotion.

There is no one love. The problem is we have multiple concepts and we all use the term love for it, even though they different things. There are so many different types of 'love'. In English it's more confusing since you use 'love' for more things then we do in my native language. Different languages make different distinctions.

To me unconditional love always sounds like a lack of self love and self respect. Loving someone that treats you poorly or makes you feel unsafe is a trauma bond, not love. If to love you first must love yourself, unconditional love can not exist if it comes to the detriment of said self love.

/I have been thinking about these things pretty much my whole life. Most of my life I have wanted English to have more than one word ****/`1for love. The Greeks had many for what we use the word love for. We do occasionally have other words that also mean love yet they are all things that fall in the eros category. Christianity because of the NT being written in Greek does go into the others a bit, especially agape (divine/unfathomable/esoteric/love for strangers or enemies). I think all the forms of love, in the Greek sense, are valid and can happen concurrently. We need to learn to separate them. Even I, who knows about the multiple kinds of love, confuse these at times. I think that using that one word in English for such a complex thing has really messed things up. If it can for me who understands these things, it must be really muddled or even opaque for those who don't even consider these issues. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It actually made me realize that I have embedded that enculturation of love = feeling good. More than I want to admit. You should look into the concept of agape. The Buddhists refer to it as Buddha heart. How we treat all humans and really all living things should be approached with this kind of love. So this means that other loves like eros or philia or storge (the big three) should always be combined with that. To me the ideal for romantic love is philia, eros, and agape. Some pragma eventually is good too, especially for long lasting dedicated and/or live together kinds of relationships. Ludus is helpful but not necessary. That's where my mental journey has been. Lately I've had to use agape to achieve philautia, well strive for. I'm not good at loving myself, yet it is essential if we are going to be able to fully love others. Really philautia without agape leads to narcissism which is why one needs to balance all love with agape, it can lead to unhealthy places mentally and emotionally.

Problem is we use one word for many different things. I believe I've mentioned this on another of your videos and you probably know but for the peanut gallery, the Greeks did a great job at separating the kinds of love. The love you are talking about is mostly agape. Romantic love that will last and good familial love and friendship love will have agape with it.

How do you balance l8ve with someone who expects you to give your all but they can pick and use you as they like. I believe i had a narcissistic partner and trying to heal and improve. I was expected/judged to give my all and take emotional scraps (imo)..how do you discern
My giving unconditionally and being used because of it? Insight will be appreciated

Listen Morty, I hate to break it to you, but what people calls “love” is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard, Morty, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage. - Rick Sanchez

There are many types of love....love for your kids, your animals, siblings, parents, friends, mentors, ancestors, nature,a higher power, yourself, spouses, etc. Some would say you havent truly experienced real love in your situation.

That’s lust or sexual attraction I think. The best love I’ve experienced is ‘unconditional positive regard’ in psychotherapy. Very different to sexual attraction.
