And Vietnam! In the case of Vietnam, it was WE who refused the election, referendum, unification, and the Vietnamese had to fight for a generation or two to kick out the foreigners.... Now Americans make videos about the delicious street food of Hanoi, and it looks like the long-delayed reunification is more or less working for people. How would I know? Well, it looks like the food is good, anyway!
Only difference is that Germany made a war, Korea didn’t. Japan started to war in Asia. But eventually, Korea had to be seperated instead of Japan. Why? I am still curious....
+TutorialGamingGuy How do you figure those are the Philippines and Indonesian lights. That picture is very close up on the Korean Peninsula. Neither the Philippines or Indonesia are in that picture.
WonderWhy Ah, I stupidly neglected to check setttings. I've only used settings to remove annotations and didn't even know that there can be optional subtitles instead of burned-in captions! My apologies.
WonderWhy Get yourself better mic. The ears are more easily "offended" than the eyes. And i did never liked your audio quality. Maybe it's different for the others. I don't know.
Yoan Dyankov My latest videos all have better sound quality. I can't remember exactly which but around video 6 or 7 I switched to a professional microphone.
WonderWhy please do a video on the following topics: 1) The Iranian revolution 2) The Spain-Catalonia conflict 3) The Reunification of Germany 4) The Pirates of Somalia I could go on, and on. But I realise this is already a handful. Thanks! :D
+Mysterious World I mean the 1979 Islamic revolution with the overthrow of the last Shah, and the leader Ayatollah Khomeini taking over. The landscape of Iran changed completely after that.
+Mysterious World you should watch the movie Argo. It explains the Iranian Hostage crisis during the revolution. Although be warned, it is a grossly exaggerated account of the events, and unbalanced.
The reunification of Germany wasn't a full reunification. After it, the Federal Republic Germany was inofficial disbanded by the removing of the article 23 of the constitution. (1945 was btw planned to reunited Germany with the territories of 1937
Wrong. They were split into two nations because of a power vacuum that formed after Japanese occupation. Two countries formed out of the ashes with the Soviets influencing the north into a communist state and the US mostly ignoring Korea until the Soviet-backed leader of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, decides to invade South Korea.
I always find it strange that Capitalism (which is about inequality) has democracy (which is fair) and Communism (which is supposed to be about equality) has dictatorships (which is unfair). I feel like the most idealistic solution would be democratic communism.
+seewolf Democratic = Rule of the people, and China is a People's Republic in title. Almost every communist regime called itself a democratic/people's republic. Even the DPRK, North Korea, is called "The Democratic Republic of Korea".
democratic communism or communist capitalism? actually China is kind of communist capitalist country, and that's why everyone hates them since they are undefined... capitalist by government, and communist by society
+seewolf There is no conflict between inequality and fairness. If one person works their whole life, and another is lazy, they will be "unequal"; yet the situation is fair.
+seewolf Well you should read Karl Marx' communist manifesto. I'm not a communist myself, but Marx said that the only way communism would succeed was with democracy!!! When the USSR popped up though, Lennon never organised a vote because of the civil wars in the USSR then Stalin came and the rest is history :(
This guy is trying to indirectly blame the US for the Korean war BUT he misses one point (which he briefly mentions but apparently doesn't count) And that is, North Korea INVADED the south. The US backed south had NO intention of ever invading the north. So, regardless of all your rhetoric about the cold war and the US and Russia, the fact remains, if the invasion hadn't have happened, no war would have occurred. It was the intention of Communists to expand. After all, the division of Korea into North and south was mutually agreed upon by the US & Russia after WWII, because as you mentioned, once the Japanese were out of the picture, Korea basically had no government body to take over. It was essential that the US and Russia set up and help build the governments in those areas since they are basically the ones that liberated Korea from Japan. The alternative would have been to do just as you described in Afghanistan, just leave them high and dry. And as you pointed out, at that time, the US and Russia were still allies. But once communism in Russia got rolling, the US was content to leave the north alone as long as they didn't have plans to invade the south. But ultimately, North Korea (And Stalin) are to blame because they invaded first. No invasion,...no war. That simple. It was the same with Vietnam and Ho Chi Min. If he had just stayed in the north and left the south alone, no war would have occurred. But again, he had the backing of Russia and Red China who were trying to spread communism throughout Asia. They succeeded in doing that with South Vietnam. But they failed with South Korea even though as you say, they are 'technically' still at war. But that window of Communism and North Korea ever successfully taking over South Korea is gone for good.
WonderWhy Well, then maybe I misunderstand what you say at 0:22 when you say the 'Split' had "more to do with the cold War" between US and Russia. But then at 1:45 you mentioned, the division of the Korean Peninsula happened directly at the end of WWII in 1945 "before the cold war". (North Korea was established Aug 15, 1945.) Russia and the US were still allies at that point and time. The cold war really didn't get it's first phase started until about two years after WWII and thereby after the initial 'split' of Korea. Russia started it's campaign to spread Communism. That of course resulted in Mao Tse-tung launching and winning 'his' Communist Revolution and establishing The People's Republic of China in 1949. And then soon after, Kim Il-Sung (Who was hand picked by the Soviets to be the leader of North Korea) launched his the invasion into the South in 1950. The US did not Provoke any of those Revolutions or invasions. And in fact, the Communist parties of both China and Korea had already existed long before the cold war or the beginning of WWII. In 1931 Kim IL-Sung had 'already' joined the Communist Party of China. (The Communist Party of Korea actually had been founded in 1925, but had been thrown out in the early 1930s for being too nationalist). But if you're saying you're intent was not to blame the US directly or indirectly then I retract that conclusion. Cheers.
Muhun Kang Nope! The split of Korea at the end of WWII was a result of the US and Russia ending Japan's 35 year rule of the penninsula and agreeing to 'temporarily' occupy the country as a 'trusteeship' with boundaries between their respective areas at the 38th parallel. The purpose of a trusteeship was to eventually establish a "free and independent" Korean provisional government as set forth in the Cairo Conference. Once the elections were scheduled, the Soviet Union 'REFUSED' to cooperate with United Nations plans to hold general and free elections in both of the two Korean zones. So, when you say this percentage of Koreans voted this way and that percentage voted that way, you are just wrong because in fact, elections never were actually held!!!!!! And as a result, Russia set up a 'permanent Communist government in the North. So, it was Russia's decision that determined ultimately what was to come!!!!!! NOT the United States of America! And of course, as a result of Russia's actions in the north, a pro-Western state was set up in the south. And the rest as they say....is history!
Muhun Kang First you say they voted, then you say a poll was taken. They are two different things. And because you've contradicted yourself, the probability is, you don't know your facts, but rather you are desperately attempting to shed the US in a bad light on the event because of your own apparent bias towards the US to begin with. Which is boringly typical in this day and age. Regardless, read my post again. It's pretty straightforward and...A FACT! "Once the elections were scheduled, the Soviet Union 'REFUSED' to cooperate with United Nations plans to hold general and free elections in both of the two Korean zones." Elections never had a chance from that point on. And 'That' my friend is the bottom line and what it all comes down to in regards to 'who' is responsible for the way things ended up! No ifs, ands, or buts about it or beating around the bush with petty arguments as you are trying to do. Accept it, it's history, it's what happened and you can't debate or reason it into being something else. End of story. And the generations of North Koreans to come after that have sadly endured the consequences of Russia's decision for 64 long years
Not the first time. Back in 2000, Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il met in a historic meeting. This was part of the Sunshine Policy Things looked bright for the Korean future, until the demon that is democracy struck at the end of Roo Moo-hyn's term, giving the presidency to the currupt politician Lee Myong-bak, who crushed the Sunshine policy, and North Korean trust, into the ground.

Kim JiHun The name seems realistic but even if the concept was possible (would've been better for everyone) because there's already a United Kingdom, it will be confusing when people refer to "UK"
+Collin ‘Ser Buckman’ Buckman Because it's quite an annoying/obnoxious accent.. I also have an accent when speaking my mother language, but it's no way to present yourself in front of millions of people. Everyone can hide their accent if they want to.
+WOOTIE It's hardly unfair. Like I said, if you are talking to a wide audience you should adjust accordingly. Just like you would probably dress nicer if you were to film yourself. He pronounces words so vastly different from what we have learned in school (non-natives) that it is no longer "just an accent".
+Eloines That's ridiculous. I'm German Texan and I understand him with no problems whatsoever. His accent is not that bad at all, and he's speaking clearly.
USA and USSR should have just gone to war because if BVS taught us anything it's that USA and USSR would have become the bestest of friends for both having a state called Georgia
RacinZilla003 and u forgot they both and nuke and and kill millions of people making other countries get in and stop . At the end u could even exist if ur ancestors survive the nuclear war
North Korea is technically a democracy. There is just one person to vote for and that is. The all mighty Supreme Leader of all people of Korea: Kim Johg Un
IIGrayfoxII Just calling it a democracy and letting people cast meaningless votes doesn't make your country a democracy. By definition, a dictatorship is not a democracy . Not even technically.
Surprisingly, there is quite a bit of economic trade between North and South Korea. You would think that two countries at "war" would not trade with each other. The two countries are pretty much as peace for the most part. China is the biggest influence on North Korea - it also happens to be its largest trading partner, it will continue to open up North Korea to foreign investment and economic growth. Learn more about the history, economics and future of North Korea on my channel.
No, no, no... Why was Korea split? Because the US, for its own design and interests (namely, the Cold War, Japan), desired a divided Korea. The division was NOT a co-decision by the US and Russia. It was a one-sided decision sans consultation from the Korean people and international community. Ironically, it was the North that fell under a _popular_, socialist regime. While in the South, the US installed an _unpopular_, pro-US regime (police state), WITHOUT the consent of the Korean people. Moreover, the bureaucracy of South Korea was composed of former Japanese traitors and collaborators (per the expedience of Washington). In the North, however, the regime cleansed government bureaucracies of former Japanese sympathizers. Furthermore, both Koreas were itching to start a fight. It is simplistic to state that North Korea invaded an unaware South. There had been border clashes for years prior to the "official" outset of the Korean war. The bottom line is this: Korea was an innocent party that was not only colonized/brutalized by Japan (with US consent and imprimatur) but was divided and victimized _again_ following the end of WWII as a result of Washington's foreign policy decision. The US installed a puppet police state in the South and only after decades of grass-roots efforts did the ROK gain true democracy. But this was a victory won WITHOUT the aid of Washington which desired a compliant S. Korea, not an unruly democracy. In the North, what started out as a government by the people, for the people, and established with the acquiescence of the people, has sadly entrenched itself as an authoritarian regime that no longer serves the North Korean people. However, it cannot be overstated that the plight of North Korea is aggravated and exacerbated by hostile US foreign policies now going on over 60 years, including sanctions and military threats, and refusal by Washington to formally end the Korean War or agree to a non-aggression pact. North Korea remains in a time-warp because in large part Washington's foreign policy against it is stuck in the Cold War. And it seems the US has little reason to change insofar as the North plays a useful bogeyman in its Asian foreign policy.
americanliberal09 No, I wasn't trying to say that at all. Please re-read. The main point is that history is more complex and ironic than we've been told.
Poor peasants don't think in terms of ideologies. They just want to eat. And "socialism" appealed to them just as it tends to appeal to most poor people around the world. What Korean people desired above all was independence. And the US didn't give Korea independence but division and a puppet S. Korean government that served Washington's interests. Even worse, it was a police state to boot with the familiar trapping from the Japanese colonial era. SKorea is a thriving democracy today but it was birthed in shame. And the Korean people in toto have yet to untether themselves from the legacy of the Cold War and division -- thanks in no small part to continuing US foreign policy.
Well summarised! As a Korean myself, who is interested in our history, I can say that thus video has all the things that can explain the reason why Korea's divided and has no bullshits that some other videos contain. Well researched!
germany had suffered after they unified, and now two koreas have much more gap than the germanies during the unification. which means, if they unified then they would probably collapse.
A nice summary of the situation. :) The history leading up to the division, from the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and US landing at Incheon in 1945, through to the Korean war (including the bit where General MacArthur advocated nuking china and was unceremoniously removed from command) are a sadly overlooked bit of history given that they come at the tail end of WW2. Fascinating stuff.
yes, it's terrible i can't even understand a word, he should've add subtitles with that accent he has since not all people around the world are familiar with it..
This is really great. We covered the korean war in like 20 minutes in my survey class and with this i feel like i really understand it thank you. Plus you made me laugh with the visuals. Esp the ww3 one.
Great video! Seems somewhat more likely that USA and USSR wouldn't fight each other because they had a perfect agreement to become filthy rich by endlessly supplying weapons to poor countries, and then swooping in to take the rest of the land and resources when they've killed each other. Destabilising the middle east wasn't a mistake, it was the goal haha then, by having them come back and declare war on the USA, it's a repeating cycle for the military industrial complex that means all three facets (big oil, construction, and weapons manufacturing) continuously make money hand over fist. In turn, a fear culture can be propagated into their own countries and a tighter hold and control can be had over the population there, leaving them with no alternative but to, for example, give more taxes the poorer you are, and cut the taxes for the rich. The poor get squeezed out of society as inflation rises disproportionately to living wages, and things like healthcare and education get sold off to richer people who privatize them. This privatisation leads to poor people either dying, or taking out a loan and putting themselves in debt to banks that are part of the same collective of people who privatised the healthcare (so they're in cahoots?!) Keeping all this extreme riches in the top 1% ensures that the 1% have a 99% of the human population to feed off of while they parasitically drain the spirit until they can distract the 99% with shiny things or cool gadgets and get them to walk around like zombies, perhaps having them stare into a hypnotising device that tracks them or shares all their personal data...some kind of screen maybe? I dunno, something anyway that means the 99% feel really isolated and disconnected from one another so that the 99% don't realise the power they actually have. OR! It is all just a coincidence and the governments really do have your best interests at heart and don't care about the money. :) either way, or a third. It's your life.
thanks for the brief but well depicted and illustrated short clip rather than those documents colored in black-white, which had majorly outlined and entailed the background and critical factors that led to the war.
Just one thing. Both Koreas have same name in English, however different names in Korean. North Korea is called DPR Choson and South Korea is called the Republic of the Great Hans.
Mysteryyy MAN6678 DPRK is best Korea. There aren't even any birds in South Korea because they're starving and ate them all and they even eat yellow snow.
slightly better than my country, south one. we call our country 'HELL KOREA' 13 yo S.korean boy was arrested for saying 'north korea is not that bad I think' Pathetic nazi country.
One of the reasons why some Koreans don’t like US is bc the US is the one who divided Korea. Koreans feel that a great injustice has been done to them by US. Koreans feel that it should have been Japan that should have been divided instead of Korea since Japan was the one that started the pacific war. Koreans feel that they have been penalized for Japans wrong doing. I think it’s a legitimate grievance.
And they forgot to mention Canada sending in troops under the UN to South Korea, but hey! We will be quiet about it, even though Canadians were considered blood seeking warriors...
PEOPLE OF THE COMMENTS I BRING YOU CLARITY: 1: He's Scottish and has a lovely accent. He can't very well change it. If you don't like it or can't understand, stop listening or listen to more of his videos. They will clarify themselves 2: IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE USA THAT KOREA SPLIT. The biggest blame goes to the US and USSR, but the world is to blame for being ideologically split and unwilling to accept that no one country is right 100% of the time. 3: Have a lovely day.
Actually, Koreans were also fighting with how Korea should go independent when Japan was invading Korea. They were split into two main groups with communists and capitalists, and they fought for independence in different ways. Fun thing is that president Rhee Sung Man of South and Kim Il Sung of North also fought for independence but end up being a dictator lol
As a Korean, it's sad that Korea is split. I hope Korea will unify. Also, The Liancourt Rocks is Dokdo, not Takeshima, and importantly they're Korean, NOT Japenese.
***** Do you think unifying the two countries are easy? Kim Jong-Un is a dictator, who is blocking the unification of Korea. Also, you don't have any proof that The Liancourt Rocks are Japanese territory. They were recognized from the world and Japan as Korean territory until The Korean Empire. Japan had illegally stole The Liancourt Rocks. Japan says Takesima is theirs, but the real owner recognized from the world is Korea.
잉여인간 Really? But USA said Liancourt Rocks were Japanese territory. And about 50 countries concluded the San Francisco Peace Treaty and concluded Liancourt Rocks to be Japanese territory.
Yeojun Kim ?? The United States of America Secretary of State Dean Rusk said Liancourt Rocks was Japanese territory in his diplomatic note. en.wikisource.org/wiki/Rusk_note_of_1951 And he also said Liancourt Rocks was not included in the peace treaty with Japan.
The death toll of civilians in the Korean War, which began with North Korea's invasion to South Korea on June 25, 1950, is estimated to exceed at least 2 million. North Korea has not apologized or compensated at all. The most tragic event on the Korean Peninsula over the last 100 years has been the Korean War.
No, the most tragic event has to be the treatment of Koreaby foreign powers, what did they expect either Korea to do after the split? Just comply and give up half their territory?
@@nvizible Rhee Syng-man was a dictator, but there were no Koreans who wanted Kim Il-sung There was no Korean citizen who wanted to be a slave to a communist like Kim Il-sung. Rather, Lee Seung-man, who foresaw the future of communism, and the United States protected Korea from communism
They might both speak "Korean," but due to the split there is a ever increasing divergence in the languages. Hangul (the writing system) isn't taught the same way between the two countries and the vocabulary has taken such a turn that N. Korean defectors often have a difficult time understanding.
Joshie Matthews, what part of Europe are you talking about? They wouldn't laugh at you. At worst they would point you to the nearest bank or exchange where exchange rates are posted on signs or video displays. And the USSR might well have sent dollars as the ruble at the time could not be spent outside of the Soviet Union. More likely, they sent billions of dollars worth of supplies and equipment to North Vietnam.
Yes, but the Soviet Union wasn’t involved in combat with japan as much as the US in wwii. Them taking North Korea was sort of payback for when japan took Manchukuo from them in the early 1900s. Japan was the main US taking, although temporary and under a heavily influenced, almost puppet government. You can even say today that a lot of world countries such as Canada and japan are so heavily influenced by the US, that they are a new breed of puppet state, autonomous, but heavily influenced
+MarkoCroatia “MarkoCroatiaMC” McPlays .... superman literally fights for "truth, justice, and the american way". Batman keeps a piece of Kryptonite in his utility belt just in case superman goes "rouge". its pretty much the definition of Mutually Assured Destruction. anyway, the soviet union was "Stalinist", and China was "Maoist", they corrupted the system until it was nothing like what true communism was meant to be. Communism means "Community", everybody sharing and working together for the common good, it doesn't work because humans are generally greedy As*holes. but there were small pockets where true communism thrived, Italy in the 1920s for example. Technically, your family is a communist system, you, your parents and siblings share resources equally.
There are a few historically incorrect parts to this video. 1) Kim il Sung did not act under the orders of Stalin to invade South Korea. Kim was a militaristic leader at that time and his goal was to reunite Korea under his purview. Syngman Rhee was also a highly nationalistic leader that wanted to reunite Korea under his respective ideology and purview. Kim had support from Stalin (no doubt about that) but Stalin was in fact, apprehensive about directly entering the conflict. This was because of a few factors: a) Stalin was apprehensive about engaging the US in direct conflict directly after the Cold War had cemented and begun in Europe. The USSR was still recovering and was unwilling to directly go into another war with the US. b) Stalin knew that the US did not see Korea as a strategically important location based on Dean Acheson's speech and the NSC-68 list which did not list Korea as a strategically important location for the US. Instead, the US had view Japan at that time to be of a greater strategic importance than Korea. However, because of (b), that was also what spurred Stalin to agree to Kim's incessant begging for support (Kim asked Stalin a total of FOUR times before Stalin agreed). Another reason why Stalin also decided to help was because he was riding on the success of the spread of communism. With China (a huge area) becoming communist, Stalin had hopes that this would go on and spur more communist revolutions in the region with success. (Ironically, this was what spurred the US to enter the conflict as well, as the US feared the Domino effect where one country's turn to communism would inspire and spur others to follow - a phenomenon that they were trying to stop with containment) 2) The idea of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) was not established until after the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Although both sides had nuclear weapons, they did not see how their fight would end in certain disaster until they literally faced each other with nuclear weapons in the CMC in 1962. Back in the Korean War, such an idea was not established yet. Instead, why Stalin did not directly engage the US was because he did not want to. One of the motivations of Stalin agreeing to provide some support to Kim was on Kim's promise that the US would not intervene. Being victims of an abrupt stop and breakup of the Grand Alliance in WWII, Stalin was still reeling from the breakup and did not want to further antagonize the US. 3) Stalin's support of Kim was very limited. In fact, Stalin's support was largely financial and logistical. Stalin refused to send in troops to help Kim's campaign. The main troops that fought and literally helped the North Koreans were Chinese troops 4) China did not enter the conflict simultaneously with Stalin. Back in 1950, China was alarmed and did know of this potential conflict. However, being newly minted as the rulers of such a huge plot of land, the PRC did not extend much help to the North until the US troops had pushed the North back to the Yalu River, which prompted Mao to send in troops to help push back the US collective security forces past the 38th Parallel. In fact, Stalin had expected and anticipated that the Chinese would join in sooner or later, and hence, did not send troops directly to help the North even as they were pushed back to the Yalu River which bordered China.
Rubbish I'm Korean and I have a Korean history certificate level 1. You claim Mao Zedong didn't help early in the Korean War. Mao had already sent 80,000 ethnic Koreans to North Korea and allowed Kim Il-sung to invade South Korea.
This is the world's greatest experiment.. It shows all people are the same but end up very differently because of social-economics (nurture over nature).
It might be worth a note that the Chinese felt indebted to the North Koreans as it was Kim il-sung's Army and help that directly led Mao Zedong to victory during the Chinese civil was of 1949.
his first video about how many countries there are came 4months before CGP grey's own video about the exact same subject, please don't compare, enjoy them each for their own thing
No, North Korea has their own internet but it is separate from the rest of the worlds internet and it is mostly filled with propaganda about their "great leader", any access to the world wide web will get you executed.
German and Japan are WW2 war criminal. For this the allies split German in Europe. Understood. Then in Asia, why split Korea instead Japan? What did they do to deserve this fate? Because of this Korea went through one of the most brutal war in history and they are still at war for more than half century and remain only divided country in the whole white world. Added: Dude, the questions above is just rhetorical, trying to help to show how unfair it was for Koreans to be treated like spoil of war by U.S and USSR only for their own interests.
Because unfortunately the USA had a big interest in not spliting Japn with the Soviets because they had an important base in Japan. And because the japaneese invaded korea the Americans ask the soviets to occupy the north part of Korea while they did the same for the south part. And of course neither soviets or americans would give their part to the enemy.

North Koreans WANTED TO PROCREATE AND South Koreans WANTED ABORTIONS

Not funny
very similar to the splitting of Germany
difference is that Germany was strong country but Korea was not.
Also I think Korea is making peace with each other again
...In East and West Germany
Only difference is that Germany made a war, Korea didn’t. Japan started to war in Asia. But eventually, Korea had to be seperated instead of Japan. Why? I am still curious....
I had a dream that me and my brother took a boat to Korea and slept in North Korea then woke up and got a tour of North Korea by Kim Jong-Un

I like the visuals in your video as well as your accent. (Scottish?) You might want to put subtitles in there for non-natives of English, though.
There are subtitles.
WonderWhy Ah, I stupidly neglected to check setttings. I've only used settings to remove annotations and didn't even know that there can be optional subtitles instead of burned-in captions! My apologies.

In conclusion: Korea was seperated into two nations because of U.S.A and Soviet Union (Russia)'s fight.
Mainly China than USSR.
What did you expect the US to put up with the USSR allowing the north to overrun the south?
Daniel Ko thank you for making it clear.
Korea could have been united if it wasn't for china
When the USSR popped up though, Lennon never organised a vote because of the civil wars in the USSR then Stalin came and the rest is history :(
+seewolf this is the policy favored by Scandinavia and Norway is considered the most developed nation in the world
"Mutually Assured Destruction"?
That just sounds MAD!
Not From Denmark If both sides begin war, it would likely go nuclear and thus possibly lead to the destruction of humankind.
It was actually an official doctrine and pronounced MAD
39thala I am in no way blaming the US for the Korean War, I don't know where you got that from.
WonderWhy
Well, then maybe I misunderstand what you say at 0:22 when you say the 'Split' had "more to do with the cold War" between US and Russia. Cheers.
39thala uuyuguyjghu
Muhun Kang
Nope!
Muhun Kang
First you say they voted, then you say a poll was taken. "Once the elections were scheduled, the Soviet Union 'REFUSED' to cooperate with United Nations plans to hold general and free elections in both of the two Korean zones."
Elections never had a chance from that point on.

Now April 26 2018 North and South Korea are crossing the line and having meetings about peace.
And now june 25 2020. That meetings about peace seems to collapse. And the 2 koreas might re arm the DMZ.

It's impossible
Around 10 years ago, it could have been possible, but, now, I don't even think about it anymore.
Kim JiHun The name seems realistic but even if the concept was possible (would've been better for everyone) because there's already a United Kingdom, it will be confusing when people refer to "UK"
Why is everyone talking shit about your accent all of a sudden?
+Collin ‘Ser Buckman’ Buckman Because it's quite an annoying/obnoxious accent.. I also have an accent when speaking my mother language, but it's no way to present yourself in front of millions of people. Everyone can hide their accent if they want to.
+Eloines Actually that is very unfair if someone has to hide an accent they have used all their lives. That is just ridiculous.
Eloines I'm sorry but I am finding what you're saying very offensive. I just cannot accept how you think about this.

North Korea is technically a democracy.
There is just one person to vote for and that is.
The all mighty Supreme Leader of all people of Korea: Kim Johg Un
IIGrayfoxII Kim Jong Blank.
That's called a dictatorship.
yep.
IIGrayfoxII Just calling it a democracy and letting people cast meaningless votes doesn't make your country a democracy. By definition, a dictatorship is not a democracy . Not even technically.

Those 2 countries need to have a peace treaty. No more war. Make Korea whole again.
If you can convince one to surrender to the other, then sure. Try, I am sure North Korea would be glad to do so.
Thank You. I hope Korea becomes one country again peacefully.
Learn more about the history, economics and future of North Korea on my channel.
that will never happen as long as that fat ass kim jong un and his relatives exist.
Hopefully just like in that movie "the interview" he might get assassinated :)
These 9 minutes in a nutshell:
USA and the USSR are controlling countries to fight with each other
usually i have to rant in the comments about how historically videos like these are. However this was pretty good. keep it up
No, no, no...
But South Korea is a free capitalist country, whereas North Korea wasn't.........are you trying to say that communist dictatorship is better?
americanliberal09 No, I wasn't trying to say that at all. Please re-read. The main point is that history is more complex and ironic than we've been told.
Octavus5 Oh, o.k........so, are you telling that majority of the Koreans wanted to become communists? Really?
Octavus5 Are you trying to say that the Korean war was a mistake?
Korea should be united! KOREA FTW!
Yeah it should be, as long as the unity is under SK rule.

Well summarised! As a Korean myself, who is interested in our history, I can say that thus video has all the things that can explain the reason why Korea's divided and has no bullshits that some other videos contain. Well researched!

both Korea must be reunited into united republic of Korea just like germany
But the north has to fall first or when Kim Jong Un dies. South korea has a chance to invade the north.
good idea. dafuq
I don't think so
germany had suffered after they unified, and now two koreas have much more gap than the germanies during the unification. which means, if they unified then they would probably collapse.
They can't, they are two very very different countries now, it's like the difference between two germanies x 1000

Krish Gaming yes i do. Freedom of speach
A nice summary of the situation. :)
The history leading up to the division, from the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and US landing at Incheon in 1945, through to the Korean war (including the bit where General MacArthur advocated nuking china and was unceremoniously removed from command) are a sadly overlooked bit of history given that they come at the tail end of WW2.
Fascinating stuff.
Your video is very informative to those who doesn't know the exact story......
astute remark and very politely expressed. yet i'll rather put it as bluntly just as the speaker "explains" history: it's a joke.

This is really great. We covered the korean war in like 20 minutes in my survey class and with this i feel like i really understand it thank you. Plus you made me laugh with the visuals. Esp the ww3 one.
S and N Korea will be reunited for sure.
Awesome video man, it's got a CGP Grey kinda feel, I'm digging it. Subbed!
You explained it better than anyone else so far. Thanks
That is a interesting piece of information.
thanks for the brief but well depicted and illustrated short clip rather than those documents colored in black-white, which had majorly outlined and entailed the background and critical factors that led to the war.

Kim Jong Un: NORTH KOREA IS BEST KOREA
West Korea best Korea
East Korea beast Korea
One of the reasons why some Koreans don’t like US is bc the US is the one who divided Korea. Koreans feel that a great injustice has been done to them by US. Koreans feel that it should have been Japan that should have been divided instead of Korea since Japan was the one that started the pacific war. Koreans feel that they have been penalized for Japans wrong doing. I think it’s a legitimate grievance.
Koreans should be mad at China for being the reason North Korea still existing :P
The US AND THE USSR divided Korea
Thank you!! Video was really informative
And they forgot to mention Canada sending in troops under the UN to South Korea, but hey! We will be quiet about it, even though Canadians were considered blood seeking warriors...
He said Turkey and Canada was braver than USA and even though USA and UK sent lots of $$$, American soldiers weren't braver than Canadians
Derek Park
Gee, thank you for the summary, google translate made this translation an incomprehensible mess!
Derek Park if that's what he said then I'll say thank you.
I am Korean anyway....
***** North Korea Can Die.
PEOPLE OF THE COMMENTS I BRING YOU CLARITY:
1: He's Scottish and has a lovely accent. He can't very well change it. If you don't like it or can't understand, stop listening or listen to more of his videos. They will clarify themselves
2: IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE USA THAT KOREA SPLIT. The biggest blame goes to the US and USSR, but the world is to blame for being ideologically split and unwilling to accept that no one country is right 100% of the time.
3: Have a lovely day.
Timothy Alvis U.S and USSR didn't have right to decide Koreans fate. But U.S and Russia are committing war crimes even now.
There is no such thing as "rights". Rights are granted by those who hold the monopoly on violence.
@@anniejones3634 things would've be been a lot worse if they hadn't of split.
Bruh USA AND U.S. IS THE SAME THING
As a Korean, it's sad that Korea is split. I hope Korea will unify. Also, The Liancourt Rocks is Dokdo, not Takeshima, and importantly they're Korean, NOT Japenese.
Then unify right now, you South and North.
And Liancourt Rocks is Japanese territory.
Ger out of there, Koreans.
잉여인간
Really? But USA said Liancourt Rocks were Japanese territory. And about 50 countries concluded the San Francisco Peace Treaty and concluded Liancourt Rocks to be Japanese territory.
***** You have no proof. I think you're making things up.
Yeojun Kim
?? The United States of America Secretary of State Dean Rusk said Liancourt Rocks was Japanese territory in his diplomatic note.
en.wikisource.org/wiki/Rusk_note_of_1951
And he also said Liancourt Rocks was not included in the peace treaty with Japan.
Yes
Why should they apologize? They were fighting for the Korean people against first japan, then the US and dictator Rhee
No, the most tragic event has to be the treatment of Koreaby foreign powers, what did they expect either Korea to do after the split? Just comply and give up half their territory?
@@nvizible North Korea is a group of murderers who sacrificed two million people of the same race They are obliged to apologize

South Korea best
If only China didn't intervene.
North Korea worst Korea! South Korea best Korea!
Hayden Kim I love south Korea north Korea can blow up evacuate inoccent people but kim Jon um can die
Halo Modify thank
Halo Modify yes it was because I'm from South korea
In Europ, German started war and divided after WWII, In Asia, Japan started the war and Korea was divided instead if Japan.
Japan must be divided as a war criminal country. But US and USSR divided Korea instead.
Yes so US must be divided
North Japan
South Japan
Cuz they are too small and like shit. They can’t do anything.
So thankful
5:00 The USSR is Batman?? So, I'm a communist?!?
+nunya baznus you taught me more in 40 secs than my teacher in 1 year, thx man!
+MarkoCroatia “MarkoCroatiaMC” McPlays well that's obvious, as most schools don't really offer anything that useful after 3rd or 4th grade.
But Batman usually wins Batman VS Superman... Whatever im not much into DC i prefer Marvel.
+nunya baznus ok, well only "technically"
There are a few historically incorrect parts to this video.
1) Kim il Sung did not act under the orders of Stalin to invade South Korea. Kim was a militaristic leader at that time and his goal was to reunite Korea under his purview. Syngman Rhee was also a highly nationalistic leader that wanted to reunite Korea under his respective ideology and purview. Kim had support from Stalin (no doubt about that) but Stalin was in fact, apprehensive about directly entering the conflict. This was because of a few factors:
a) Stalin was apprehensive about engaging the US in direct conflict directly after the Cold War had cemented and begun in Europe.
(Ironically, this was what spurred the US to enter the conflict as well, as the US feared the Domino effect where one country's turn to communism would inspire and spur others to follow - a phenomenon that they were trying to stop with containment)
2) The idea of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) was not established until after the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
The main troops that fought and literally helped the North Koreans were Chinese troops
4) China did not enter the conflict simultaneously with Stalin.
That is a good point.
Rubbish I'm Korean and I have a Korean history certificate level 1. You claim Mao Zedong didn't help early in the Korean War. Mao had already sent 80,000 ethnic Koreans to North Korea and allowed Kim Il-sung to invade South Korea.
This was really educational. Thanks!

Because of North Korea's Kim Il Sung who started Korean War.
pittD132 Korean War happened 5 years after the split. No split no war.
IF Korea's reunifies, then Manchuria would be part of it.
Because unfortunately the USA had a big interest in not spliting Japn with the Soviets because they had an important base in Japan. And because the japaneese invaded korea the Americans ask the soviets to occupy the north part of Korea while they did the same for the south part. And of course neither soviets or americans would give their part to the enemy.
pittD132
Kim il Sung never divided Korea, the Americans and Soviets did.
