  • In this exclusive sit-down, Kevin Curtin interviews the legendary Chris Jasper. Formerly of The Isley Brothers, (1973-1983) Chris played a major role as their keyboardist, primary songwriter, producer, composer, arranger, and chief architect of "The Isley Brothers Sound" during this period.
He is responsible for some of their biggest records and played a major role in defining a new sound for R&B during his time with the group. In this interview, Chris tells us stories behind a lot of their classic records, his contributions to Isley Jasper Isley, and going solo. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

I read the story, the younger Isley's as well as Chris Jasper grew tired of writing all the music for the older brothers, it was said the younger brothers would stay in the T neck studio writing and recording music, the older brothers with drive to the studio in their Rolls-royces go in the studio sing their verses record it and drive back home.

The Isley Brothers were the main and biggest influence that really pushed me to work hard and take music seriously. I began playing guitar at the age of three . The first album that I heard was 3+3 . That was in the 70's. This music was flawless to my ears. I had always wondered why. There was no youtube in the 60's / 70's so being able to hear your favorite artist speak about their work ethics was impossible. I have watched a lot of interviews of both Chris and Ernie , very motivating and appreciated. All of my years of hard grueling practice really has paid off, my life as a guitarist has been great and very fulfilling. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    great interview
unril recently most lovers of soul music and the isley's had no idea chris was the man behind all of those great isley brother songs back in the day.. he was not up in the forefront like ernie or ronnie so people who saw them play and listened to their records just thought he was just another pretty boy "hanger-on background musician" just filling up a spot in the band who also was an opportunist who got into the family by marrying one of the isley brother's sisters... boy was that wrong!
would have loved to hear him go in depth about that breakup from the isley brothets band though.. that was not touched upon at all!

Myke Ford you’re right! I hope Chris still gets royalties on those songs. Now we know Chris and Ernie were the brains behind all those 70s records. And yet, on every album it always said written and produced by all the brothers. I think they did that mainly for business reasons so they could be secure financially years later.
