The fact some mad man thought of it, let alone invented it, made it sound a mad combination of a medieval Celtic-to-eastern-to-Ukrainian-to-Mongolian violin bagpipe guitar, then built it, replicated it and other people learned to play the bizarre contraption is a marvel in itself. Let alone the fact it its lived on to this day and yet it looks like some impossible futuristic retro cyber punk Sci fi impossible gadget, it sounds awesome ... And the scotch-drunk bonkers name "hurdy gurdy" just adds to its uniqueness. #subscribed... Thank god for talent like you ... and for RUclips for bringing it to the world! Awesome!
Best part: the instrument design in its earliest form was the "organistrum" -- which was created in the late 900s or early 1000s CE.
It originated in the Byzantine empire around 900CE, so it really nicely standed the test of time.
It's also called a LYRA in Ukrainian...

We do separate between lyra (plucked) and lira (bowed/wheeled) but not everything adheres to that distinction either. And there are even hammered instruments that are called lyra!
The name was given to it by the English as as a variant of "hurly-burly", seemingly because there were French sailors playing it noisily in the harbors. ／(⁎≧∇≦)＼

"Memrise" would be a good brush up (phone app). I bet you would find it easy to relearn but probably not likely to remember too much more than what you already have.
