There were similar restaurants in Manila bay in the early 90s where I ate as a kid, they all closed down before the year 2000. Its amazing the hong kong jumbo palace stayed open for this long. Floating restaurants are an exclusively 80s phenomenon.
When I was 4 years old, I went on a tour to Hong Kong and Jumbo was one of the first restaurants we visited. It was wonderful, even though I was still 4 I still remembered the atmosphere of the crowded restaurant. It is sad to see it leaving, I thought I would go there again in the future 😥
if there are enough high res still pictures images that are shot on this boat, someone maybe able to piece them together and create a VR experience game on this boat. VR experience will be the next closest thing you can get nowadays to an actual visit. Just a suggestion.
It is a shame what is happening to the restaurant. I ate there once in the mid 80s. That place is an icon. I wanted to go back there when I visit HK again. Hope it is preserved as a cultural center or relocated.
When I was a tour leader around1989 to 1991, I regularly took the tourists to have lunch here. So, I earned quite a commission from this restaurant. I think my last visit was in 2006/2007 when I was a tourist myself and my bestie to have dinner in this iconic spot. Well, maybe it falls not just because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, but also because it is not attractive anymore. Too slow to respond to the change, I think.
I agreed. The 2000 service and the 2016 services aren't that different. The menu haven't changed and so is the interior. The only thing that changed is the prices which have increased quite dramatically. Which is why a friend told me since 2010 tours didn't offered dining experience on the restaurant like it was before, they only do some quick photographs before going on to the next main attraction
I hope they can save this. I haven't been to HK but this looks actually cool and something tourist would visit. Maybe move it closer to the shore and instead of it just floating they can just build something below it to hold it up.
This place gave our family alots of sweet memories as our parents went there having dinner and took their honeymoon photo together wearing chinese emperor & empress costumes during the 80s....very sad to see it delapidated...We will miss u Jumbo...unforgetable sweet memory from Brunei Darussalam,
First, they plan to end the harbor ferry service. Now, the Jumbo is next on the chopping block. It is a sad development. Pretty soon, old Hong Kong will no longer exist. I hope the HK administration will find a way to preserve whatever remains of old Hong Kong. Without these legacies, what will be left? A bunch of soul-less corporate jungle of mindless modern buildings, condos and malls.
Interesting actually a bunch of corporate HQ in hk are moving away from hk as well as their expat staffs. Due to political uncertainty and covid. I remember last visited jumbo probs abt 10 or 15 yrs ago everyone was complaining that’s it’s over priced restaurant with a gimmick so barely any locals eats there and yet now ppl are sad they are closing down. It has been quite for sometime. Sorry I don’t get it so many locals are sad when they never visit or support the restaurant.
@@jzi1012 I dined at Jumbo a few times. Rarely, but it was always a super cool memory; sad to see it go. Seems like everything and everyone is going...hopefully that Hong Kong 2.0 idea that economist proposed takes off and there can be some sort of reunion haha
I do like the idea of a mega restaurant floating on the water, odd how i never heard of it. I can see why something like this would be iconic, especially when various famous figures and movies were set there. But the logistics of a dozen restaurants in the water would be difficult to maintain. And with covid being so restrictive in HK, that attraction had no chance to survive. its a cool concept but it has little chance for sustainability. i bet getting trash out of a place like that would be a nightmare, especially when you dont do it in front of guests. i wouldnt doubt they dumped hella food waste into the sea, but its probably not just food waste. still a cool place

hong kong locals dont go there because ever since the son inherited the business the seafood has a fetid smell, tastes not that great, and is extremely overpriced, only foreigners go there
actually due to pandemy situation, many travel cruise ships are dismantled or abandoned because the cost to break them into resources is taking more money. if they wanted to build new floating restaurant, might as well buy one of those abandoned vessel as a base
I'm sad. I went there when I was 8 years old in the 90s. I can still remember the huge crab we ate. ❤️❤️. And the atmosphere was amazing. I hope they can somehow save the restaurant.
Getting battlefield 4 memories from this. It’s a shame such a beautiful building is slowly collapsing in front of our eyes. Hong Kong needs to preserve this building in the water or bring it to land if possible.
I lived in hong kong when I got married to my Chinese husband i went to the floating restaurant it was very beautiful this was in the late 70 and early 80 s I will be sorry to see it go it’s part of hong kong when I returned to visit family I was sorry to see a lot of the old buildings had disappeared they were what made hong kong so special to me
Such a magnificent & beautiful building. Chinese architecture is one of the world's most beautiful. Its so heartbreaking to hear this one's going down. I hope they come up with a better solution to preserve this hotel.
I still remember when I was kids, my parents took me here, I remember riding a boat n floating restaurant n still had picture of it, kinda sad this place had to closed, even I haven’t visit HK since I was a child
Sadly, it capsized and sank when they were towing it through rough waters. What a horrible move in retrospect. Now it's gone...completely. A historical landmark and treasure sunk.
I ate there all three times that I've been to Hong Kong. I can't believe that portion in the back completely capsized. That's crazy. Hopefully, it doesn't end up being yet another thing destroyed forever by the pandemic.
I went to the Jumbo in HK harbor when I was 15, it was amazing experience, I even have pictures from dressing up and sitting on the throne for a picture!
The floating restaurant has been there since the 1950's. It was called Tai Bak Seafood Restaurant before the name changed to Jumbo Seafood Restaurant in around 1970.
That restaurant is like ancient relic, instead of demolish it I would rather make it a museum, but yeah if the cost end up too high to maintain it even just as a museum build a new one maybe a better idea, but maybe later after the pandemic
My family went there for dim sum about 20 years ago. Nice food and pretty environment. Iconic place. Sad to see it end like this. Really hope Hong Kong government try to keep it.
