  • In this video I use the technique of a jam chuck to turn a deep bowl. This is a simple method of turning a bowl without a chuck. In the video I used poplar wood and went for a shape close to a noodle bowl.

A good example of working with you've got, not wanting new gear all the time! Cheers mate, that was interesting and enjoyable.

This is a good idea. Making your own “jam” chuck so to speak. I’ve used hot glue waste blocks a lot as well. Wish I had seen this when I got started.

Another way to do this is to screw the baking plate to a piece of board and then glue the board to the bottom of the bowl with a piece of news paper between them. When your bowl is finished use a wood chisel to separate the bowl from the board.

    A challenge for you 🙂
Can you turn a bowl just using a skew chisel and a parting tool? I think it's impossible but, you being more skilful than I might just do it...Good video and thanks..

I heard, from the chap who gave me my first turning lessons, of someone who turned all sorts of lovely work using only the parting tool! Make of that what you will...
