Plasma Cutting With Small Air Compressor (WILL IT CUT??)

  • Plasma cutting with small air compressor. I brought a new very small air compressor to see if it was capable of running my plasma cutter. Your plasma Cutter Air Setup is a huge part of the power your machine will have .Cut 50 plasma air requirements or cut 40 plasma requires quite a large air supply but my thoughts are if you turn down your cutting amperage as well as your psi maybe we can get away with a smaller air compressor when plasma cutting. But you wont be able to cut long lengths with out giving it time to catch up and refill your holding tank. I wanted to find the lowest air pressure for plasma cutting and still be able to cut at least 3mm thick. Watch my video to find out what size compressor for plasma cutter you can get away with.

Wow Pete Thank you so much this is exactly what I wanted to know.
I have an air compressor almost the same and I was really curious to know if it would be suitable for plasma cutting.
And thank you now I know that indeed.
Keep up the good work Well done I enjoy watching your videos.

Yep - have same compressor here under another brand and works fine... However, its damp air thats cursed me in Northern Europe.. Whats a good drying fix.. I just have a couple of those inline filters, still get very spitty spluttering arc.

Pete knows more than Pete thinks he knows. I wonder how it would work with 6mm/1/4”?

Well it wont but I didn't say that , But if you are cutting thin bits and pieces it will work fine.

How about adding another similar compressor and connect those 2 using pneumatic solenoid valve 3/2 220v, it got 1 out 2 in. When compressor restart it will trigger the solenoid and altered input air from another compressor that previously full charge..I think that will give more longer cut but with the same load of electricity because compressor will not restart at the same time..yehaaaa..love all your videos sir

@@petestools I've found that 2 way solenoid 220v 2 pcs and a 3 phase contactor with 1NC 1NO will suit best.. When compressor 1 full it will give no power to solenoid valve.. This cable will be our control signal.. It connect to A1 and A2 at the contactor.. 2 way solenoid valve no.1 will get power from NC.. And another ( solenoid valve no. 2) will get NO..rundown is when compressor 1 in a full pressure -> 2 way solenoid no.1 will always open.. When compressor 1 in a charge state ( restart) - > 2 way solenoid no. 1 will close and no. 2 will open the line from compressor no. 2.. It will in this state until compressor no. 1 is full.. And the whole cycle repeat..

Should work with supersilent air compressor? Usually they have less power 0.75 or 1hp and sometimes 1.5hp. Should work also with small reservoir like portable air compressor or extreme supersilent portable air compressor?
I know is possible to tune the pressure switch to start earlier, before it lost useful pressure.
There are plasma cutters with built in low hp oil less air compressor that work, they are not the best, but they work. Maybe an oilless motor with little resevoir perform better and provide correct airflow.
