The great thing about your channel is you don’t just talk about the cameras, you actually show the differences & get right to the point. Most major photographers on here won’t or very rarely do that. Keep it up man
I have both lenses and totally agree. You have to stand too far with the 85 on an APS-C but the results were amazing. The 50 1.4 is easier to use and it produces superb portraits and offers better low light performance. Great review and thank you!!
I use both the 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 Sony OSS lenses on my Sony crop sensor A6500 for head and shoulders portraits. However, my go to portrait lenses are either the EF 85mm f/1.8 or the 70-200mm f/4L IS on my full frame 6D2. I also occasionally use my 135mm Canon SF lens with no SF dialed in... I don't like the 50mm on a full frame sensor because of the perspective distortion achieved by shooting close enough to get a head and shoulders framing. Actually, anywhere from 85mm to 135mm is a good focal length for me on a full frame camera. I also love a 55mm or 58mm f/1.4 lens for head and shoulder portraits with a crop sensor camera. I frequently use a manual focus 55mm f/1.5 Auto Sears (Tamioka produced) lens on my A6500 but not on my 7D2, because manual focusing is far better on the Sony than on the7D2... Actually, I also have a very unique lens which is great for portraits on a crop camera and not bad at all on a full frame camera. It is an 80mm f/1.7 Night Hawk, a security camera lens which needs to be shot wide open since there is no diaphragm. I only use this outdoors since I tend to shoot at f/4 to f/5.6 indoors. I need the wide open aperture outdoors because I do not have the control of the background like I do with studio shooting. Meat thing about this lens is that it only cost about forty bucks with an additional ten or so for the adapter to my Sony E mount...
Very helpful video showing the difference on were you have to stand. I haven't seen that before. been looking all over RUclips for a video like this. Thank man!! I appreciated it.
I got these two cannon lens right now with the cannon adapter for my cannon m50 still trying to figure out the 85mm but I got so comfortable with the 50mm and figure it out right away.
I dont agree. I have both and I really dont like the 50 but I love the 85. The 50 is really soft at 1.4 so it doesnt make sense to even use its maximum aperture. Autofocus is not great either. The 85 has really good auto focus and you get really creamy bokeh while still very sharp. I also disagree that 85 is only for portraits. I use it alot for street photography and it forces you to become more creative and selective in your compositions. That makes your photos unique and they stand out, compared to the 50 which is a good allround focal length, but not great at anything.
I agree with you. I have the rf 50 mm 1.8 stm and i am disappointed, i planing to buy the old one 85 with an adapter. Is the 85 sharp? Tell me more about 85 please?
@@AShehaj The 85 is sharp enough. I upgraded my camera kit to Sony a7iii a couple of months ago and got the Sony 85mm f1.8. That lens is notably sharper than the Canon EF 85mm. But the canon still does a good job if you dont want to zoom in too much. You can also pick it up for a good price which is definately value for money.
Hi @TbonesTech ! Thanks for your videos. Could you help me with this one : Canon ef 50 mm f/1.4 usm vs canon ef 85 mm f/1.8 usm ( my range of budget) Which one do you recommend for pictures of people dancing or any occasion indoor in low light conditions?

Good video but probably worth mentioning that the biggest difference isn’t working distance; it’s the effects of tension and compression you’d get on the person’s face.
I got a little question: Is your 6D always nailing the focus with the 85mm 1.8 or have you made any adjustments? If so please tell me, because my 6D doesn't focus right almost every time I'm shooting with my 85mm.
Thanks for your video! So what do you think is best for newborns and kids? I have 85 mm 1.8. and thinking to sell it and buy canon 50 mm 1.4 . Please, help to decide

Brother I'm going to buy 6d mark ii.... Bt I'm confused over lenses... Basically for wedding... Which two lense I should bye?? 50mm 1.4 / 85mm 1.8 / 35mm 1.8
Hello ,,i have ordered 6d mkii with canon EF 35mm f/2 is usm & the 85mm f/1.8 usm for wedding next week . These two lens are more than enough for a full frame camera.
I am looking for a lens but not sure which one to get, i have a 50mm 1.8 AFS and want to upgrade. Budget max 500$. I need it for full body picture outside and with bokeh. Would 35 or 85 be better? Or even 50mm 1.4??
@@sanio.7795 The 50mm 1.4 is too similar to your 50mm 1.8. It doesn't help you for a new angle (or as you write for "an upgrade"). Now it depends on what your looking for on an APS-C body - more tele (go with the 85) or more like the wide angle (but then 35 would be not the right choice - there you should look about something like a 16 if there is some lense within your budget)!
Can you in the next video make a comparison shot between the different shots? Like show all shots together, that way you can actually see the difference!
Which one is better for best bokhe effect . I didn't feel any big difference between this two lense after take a shots . Please suggest which one is best for background blur and bokhe effects
yes this is so true. im really inlove with 85 mm lens whenever we shoot local pageant here in our country and I used 50 mm whenever we have engagement session but still they're both sharp. :) filipino freelance photographer here. :) thanks for the information sir.
Brother please reply... I am planning to buy canon 200d with 50 mm lense. Will it produce better result? Can a cheap dslr bod with 50mm lense produce good image quality?
depending on what type of photography you’re doing the 200d can get you a great image with the right glass on it. It doesn’t have a high burst rate so it wouldn’t be a great sports camera and a cropped sensor does worse in low light than a full frame camera. However, if you are planning to do well lit portrait photography, you should get some great results with a 50mm or 85mm lens with a fast aperture (1.2-1.8) you’ll get that nice bokeh and 24.2 megapixels will provide you a good amount of detail in your image. Just remember on a crop sensor 50mm will be like 85mm and 85mm will be more like 145mm. The higher the mm the more compression you’ll get on an image which usually makes for a more blurred out background but can also change the shape of the subjects face. Hope this helps a bit!
I’ve used the 80d and had great results, but having looked at the specs of both cameras I don’t imagine the 80d would be any better than the 200d. I see the 200d has a higher expandable iso, but that might not mean anything if the image falls apart past a certain point and the 80d has a faster maximum shutter but once again it wouldn’t mean anything if you’re doing portrait photography. I would buy the 200d and invest more money in good lenses.
80d is probably better for video, but you can always manual focus your photos if there’s not enough focus points, but it depends what type of photography you’re doing.
because 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 have the same price,. so if you have money and you its not enough to purchase both lense, this review will help you to choose between 1.4 and 1.8
Great video, very informative! I have the Sigma18-35mm f/1.8 on an APSC-S Canon camera...any thoughts (preferences) on whether I should purchase the Sigma 35mm [56mm effective focal length] f/1.4 or the Sigma 50mm [80mm effective focal length] f/1.4? Thanks!
You don’t have to be so tight with the portraits, a 50mm lens at f/1.4 has a shallow enough depth of field to step back and have more of the background in the image.
Thanks. You answered my question exactly. Clear and to the point. (If you didn't use so many words, you wouldn't have to talk so fast. lol) Good presentation though. I like your background in the conclusion.
