      Julia Trotti can you make a video about how to take your own travel photos from your dslr (solo travel photography) because I’m expecting to go on a solo Europe trip soon and want to take great photos plus no one has uploaded a proper video on that 😊😊

    I've just gotta say, There are a million vids on RUclips about 35mm vs 50mm. But your vid has BY FAR the best explanation as to why someone would use one over the other. Really appreciate the vid, subed.

      I have to agree with this assessment. Your video was better for at least a variety of reasons: #1. You explained specifically what you are looking for from the lens and what it gives you. #2. You took time to show the shots. #3. You took time to explain in each shot why you showed it and what you were explaining ie. “too much background blur” etc. #4. The side by side 35 vs 50 pics toward the end. This all added up to an informative video that made sense.

    Thanks for the video.
    For portraits, I have used lenses that range in focal length from 28mm to 200mm.
    Which focal length I use depends on the type of portrait I am shooting.
    For large group portraits, I like 28 or 35mm.
    For small group portraits, I like 35 or 50mm.
    For environmental portraits, I like 35mm.
    For full-length and ¾ length, I like 50mm.
    For half-length and head & shoulder, I like 85 or 90mm.
    For face shots, I like 105 or 135mm.
    For tight face shots, I like 180 or 200mm.
    When I do not have time to switch lenses, I use the following two zooms on two bodies:
    28-70mm f/2.8
    80-200mm f/2.8

      :-) Julia! I have a question if you have time: I've been watching reviews about Canon 30mm lens and 50mm. The reviews, which date back 4 years ago (ruclips.net/video/AKsgrgaGuu0/видео.html), concluded that the 50mm 1.4 just doesn't have a good quality, even compared to the 1.8. I would like to have your opinion. Did Canon improve it's 50mm 1.4 since then? I am asking because, for the moment, I simply cannot afford any of these L series lens. Thank you in advance!

    I'm with you -- 35mm 1.4L is a great choice for portraiture, esp. in non-studio situations. I also love the 50 1.2L too, though I reach for the 35 more... The bokeh from both are great, though of course the 50 1.2 will offer more at comparable focal distance from the subject. Thank you Julia.

  • @KBee795

    Hi Julia, I favor my 35mm f1.8 over all my lenses as it shows what the human eye sees. This was the press lens used by reporters and military photographers. It's the lens that stays on my D7500. I also have a 50mm f1.4 and a 85mm f1.8 and agree with you that the nifty fifty is a non-distorting lens that is very sharp. My 85mm is also nice but used more as a studio lens or outside to get some distance from the group so I'm not in the way. My candid shots with the 35 are sharp and focus is fast. If I were to suggest only one lens it would be the 35mm in the fastest F stop obtainable. I also use zoom lenses for landscapes to frame the shot just right and use a tripod so a fast F stop isn't an issue there. But for some of my family shots, to catch that moment, my 35mm lens keeps getting the shots. Keith

    Great video. I like that you gave your point of view without demonizing other choices. Thanks for sharing. I just bought the 35 mm f1.4 and I adore it. I'm getting by with the 50 mm f1.8. So far, I can't justify the expense for the 1.2. So far, my bag of primes is the 35 mm f1.2, the 50 mm f1.8, and the 100 mm f2.8. So far, my bag of zooms gets more work as they are practical for sports. That kit is 16-35 f2.8, the 24-70 f2.8, and the 70-200 f2.8. By the way, the models in your neck of the world are killer.

    I agree that 35mm and 50mm are best lenses for portrait expecially when you need that subject have to be clear as well background. In 2014 I was in Shiraz and I used a 85mm nikon 1.8; my friend professor in Photography at Academy in Shiraz opposite to my choose had the traditional 24-70mm 2.8. It was a very good meeting to evalue portrait possibility of lens. I think tele is suitable to decontextualize subject, and wide angle has its best for subject absorbed in clear background, half-way to portrait/landscape together. Telephoto lens tends to crush the image, to make it flat on the whole, and to get subjec fat; the wide-angle gives depth, volume three-dimensionality to the image but get a subject tiny. Therefore it is necessary to evaluate also and especially what picture we are going to make. You run the risk by using a tiny model of too much tiny and viceversa for the fat model. Thanks for you interesting video Julia.

      The Non-L versions of 35mm are good as well, and a respectable photoshop that sells second-hand lenses might have a good copy of such a lens as well. 35mm and 50mm are relatively inexpensive for them being close to the field of view the human eye reproduces and, by simple coincidence the breaking index of glass is near to optimum for those lenses and only require a reasonably simple lens and lensgroup setup compared to wide-angle or tele-lenses.

    Lots of positive comments below saying what I want to say... gist of it, nice to see someone who embraces the 35 for portraits! I expected to see another portrait video using 85 or longer focal lengths. I often use 70-200mm or 100mm macro for portraits, but often my favorites are with the 35! I shoot with a partner who at first ONLY owned a sigma 35...and she got amazing results! Keep up the good work.Subscribed!

    Would love to see how your kit has changed over time and what you don’t use anymore. I love your work, I always get inspired.
    I use an APS-C body and I have gone from using several lenses to just a few. My main lens is a 40mm which has a 60mm length on my APS-C body. I find it to be an amazing lens that I use about 95% of the time for my street photography and portrait work. I use a wide angle for some landscape work and one other work horse. I am glad to see others who don’t need twenty lenses on every shoot.

    Achieving tack sharp images with an 85mm is to use the single spot focus dot on the nearest eyeball to the camera. A UK Canon Ambassador gave me that advice. I noticed that you use a Canon 5D Mk3, I don't know how many focusing points that Model has, but all I can tell you is that 5DS or 5DMk4 especially the Mk4 would be a noticeable difference in focusing for the type of photography you do. 😀 Regarding movement I would use the 5 spot cross ➕ position it on the screen where you want the models head to be in the frame. Just keep the cross hairs on the models head. I use a 5DS and it has a set of custom buttons for improving the speed of focus capture, which are also customisable, as well. Rudie Windson Canon USA does an excellent job explaining Canon customizable focusing system!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  6 лет назад +2

      I first had a 5dmkii many years ago and the upgrade to the mkiii focus points was so amazing! haha. At the moment the mkiii works well for me so I might skip the upgrade to the mkiv for now and wait for another model instead. But yes, I completely agree about how to use the focus points when photographing portraits. I am planning on making an in depth video about focusing really soon :)

    I always thought the 50 would've been a waste in my bag, as I would always want to see more of the frame... But then Sigma just released their godly 40mm 1.4, which is closer to the diagonal of a full frame sensor (43mm I believe) for it to be 100% true to life. You should do a review on it, and how it compares to your 50 1.2!

And 38mm is pretty close to 35mm , i bought it from a while and its very versatile and sharp . I Hope you find this helpful ^_^

    Hey Julia, Thx for this series of videos on the lenses you use/no longer use. They had a great influence over my unending indecisiveness. After watching 3 of them you convinced me to buy the 35mm and 50 1.2, which represents a huge upgrade for me as I only had a 24-70. I have yet to buy the 35 (I also love the deformation it creates when shooting close to the model) but I'm super happy with the 50, although the speed of autofocus is indeed a bit behind when the subject is moving. but I knew it when buying it thanks to you and I reckoned it was worth saving a 1000 euros (France). maybe I'll upgrade this lens one day. keep up the good work. Cheers,

    Really enjoyed the monologue. Who else is always thinking about the best combination of primes? I'm at 35mm 50mm and 100mm. Feel that 100mm is better than 85mm as it doubles as a short telephoto for other non-portrait usage.

    I have no idea why i like your accent so much. And yes, 35 and 50 are awesome. Fujinon 35 f 2.0 apsc is my 1st lens, and it is really good.

    Nice to finally find someone who don't go for extreme bokeh. That makes the pictures extra awesome.

    • @sendykumalakanta1
      @sendykumalakanta1 6 лет назад +1

      Then you can use a crop sensor camera, it wont have extreme bokeh as full frame even wide open.

      I think so too! It's nice to see some surroundings of your location sometimes 😊

      It's actually not about bokeh, but compression a totally different subject, but nevermind.

    • @MO-hq4iz
      @MO-hq4iz 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, but the compression changes based of focal length and when Julia talks about bokeh she is really talking about the surroundings of location, and this is the compression and is a property of field of view, so focal length and crop factor is the key here.

    Dope video. I’ve been debating this very dilemma (35 vs 50) for a long time. This crystallizes their use case for me very well. Thank you.

    Just a random thought.
    I wish Canon would take their 55-200 and make a f2.8 version of it.
    Just rambling :)

    I have Fuji 23mm and 35mm (35mm & 50mm ff equiv) and now I can stop looking for 85mm ff. The 2 primes are enough for what I’m doing now ;)

    Good video. I love using lenses which are just "not meant to take that kind of shot!" to take that kind of shot. Case in point, just as you like the quirky look that 35mm gives to portraits I've also started using my Tamron 15-30 to do the same with individuals and groups (although you DO have to be careful to keep people as close to the center as possible lest they become twice as wide as nature intended towards the edges) and using my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 for landscapes. I do own Canon's 50mm f1.4 -for 6 years now, but for some reason never really fell in love with it.

      @juliatrotti  6 лет назад +1

      Yess, I love that! I can only image how many cool shots you could get with a 15-30! And yes I agree, even with the 35mm you have to be careful with what's in the edges of your photo because of distortion.

    • @randydietmeyer5883
      @randydietmeyer5883 6 лет назад

      Yes, there is some distortion at 15mm, even after correction, but hey, they are still kids. :) www.wayneslandphotography.com/Christmas/i-LCCMtX7/A

      I've started working on that video so I'll be uploading it soon! I also used to struggle with what lenses to take with me, so I would take all of them and my camera bag used to be so heavy haha

      For me 16-35, 50 and 85 work great together. Depending on what I shoot I sometimes leave either the 50 or the 85 at home. But I think everyone has a different opinion on that topic 😬

      Average at best. Photographers who have shown 85mm and 135mm cut off at the knees her comment about lack of distortion. It may not seem like the 50mm has much, but samples from 85mm to 200mm speak more loudly.

    Thanks Julia, I’ve only just found you and sub’d. Thank you for steering me away from the usual 85mm scenario. I guess this is best for studio work and head shots. Could one get the wide angle, no distortion and bokeh with the 50mm 1.4 if one stepped further back from the subject? In which case this would be the one for me to buy. I might go for the Sigma Art 50mm as I used to have a Sigma Art 35mm before I sold all my Canon gear and the bokeh was really top spec creamy!
