...it's taken me years of returning to Ulstvolskaya, but I think I am finally "getting" her. My perception has been that she is much more difficult to come to terms with than many supposedly more obscure and incomprehensible composers, most of whom identify as dodecaphonists. You have to stick with her obdurate-seeming music and face it, but then something remarkable and extremely hard (at least, obviously, for me) to quantify or express happens...

paul amrod Well said. This is totally uncompromising and listenable at the same time.
Webern's music suffers from horrible performances. His songs are difficult and are badly sung.
I think both composers are great in their own style.
