I work at a ski resort and about 2 years ago I was taking the company bobcat up the one ski slopes, not for a joyride, but because I needed to address a large leak. Mind you almost everything we have for the ski slopes is on tracks. As I was going up the slope it was of course pretty slippery, well the bobcat all the sudden turned 180° and I was now sliding down the slope. I finally did get control of the machine and decided I better find a different route to where I had to go. Lesson learned: was make sure you know exactly what you are doing, things can go from good to bad in the blink of an eye. You definitely have to respect what you are operating.
Everyone's an expert when we sit back and watch these mishap videos, however, some fail to realize that not everyone is the expert they claim to be when they first took the driver seat... I've operated heavy equipment from skid steers, track hoes, back hoes, front end loaders, dozers etc,. Anytime you take the seat for the first time, it's a new experience... You have to get a feel for the machine and what it's capable of... From time to time you may find yourself in a similar situation and not quite sure how to correct it... This is where experience comes in and it just doesn't happen over night... I'm sure this operator, with more experience under his belt, could've easily walked that machine out of that... For those of you new to the skid steer scene, you'd be amazed at what one can do with this machine... It just takes practice...
Joe Dirt Skid steers are modern day Houdini's in my eyes.lol I have been caught in a few situations myself, but calm cool and collected will get ya right out.
Joe Dirt exactly man alot of time it's just about working your bucket and tracks in a bunch of different directions until you get the angle or grip that is necessary these bobcats and pretty damn tough to get absolutely and positively stuck
I would have rolled the bucket down and drove out but everyone looks at situations differently. I say who gives a crap about the Bobkitty.... look at that house right on the lake!!!! I WANT IT, Thanks for posting the video, without it I would just be sitting on the couch in my underwear telling someone else how to do something lol
A skid steer was engineered for the brain of an 8 year old to understand and thus be able to run its amazing how men in there 20s think this is expressive, It's hard making such an easy job look that difficult but you did expressive work
kinda reminds me of the first time I operated one. I learned very quickly not to go forward up steep hills without a load. also don't make any sudden moves with any attachments. it like to fall on its ass
Could have yes, but he was tipped so far forward that his body weight was probably preventing the seat bar from being fully seated, therefor his BICS was preventing the hydraulics from working. It would be very difficult to have the seat bar all the way down when the machine is so far tipped forward.
You do awesome work Jim, I've enjoyed watched all of your videos. A true dirt professional. And never afraid to show a mishap that others can learn from. >salute
At least nothing was damaged and the truck was close by. The 1st time I tipped forward on a skidsteer I took out the wooden sides on the dump truck. Experiencing something like this is how we find the limit of the machine and ourselves.
You made a mistake the first time. I drove over soft dirt like that a lot of times. The key to not getting stuck like you did is tilt your bucket all the way up and you will be gliding over the pile of dirt instead of sinking your bucket like that. I'm sure you know all that but decided to throw it out there anyway :) good vid
Is it a newer machine and had some sort of an angle sensor?? I have a 190 and I've been in much worse of a perdicamen and I just worked myself out with the bucket
Hi again Jim. To say anyone can drive a Bobcat would be like saying anyone can play a piano. Sure anyone can smash the keys over and over or play chop sticks. But making music out if it is a completely different thing. I view the Bobcat like this. I would love to see you make a video on the finer points of Bobcat operation. Why you do something a certain way. What you see as the completed result before you get started. I've heard it said you are a master of something once you make it look easy to everyone else. And I think you are there. Of course I'm talking about your hundreds of other video's :)
you could've dumped the bucket, then use the bucket to walk your self out (going forward, not backward, though walking the bobcat out backwards with the bucket may have also worked.
Leave the dirt from your first push in the bucket, and now use your bucket as a blade and on your last push empty your bucket. You only need to lift a few inches to back and repeat. This way your bucket is always near the ground.
he obviously had a BICS issue as he tried to restart the machine a few times but it would not let him lower the boom. When you press the "Press to operate button" the hydraulics are allowed to operate. but in his case, probably his seat bar was not fully in the seated position, preventing the hydraulics from operating. Bobcat builds their machines with a safety system that will prevent the machine from moving if all the safety conditions are not met.
Always wondered how you shot those downward angles . Wouldn't it have been easier to just tilt the camera :) ??? Good thing you had those long arms to aid in exiting the cab!
You has written " I'm just glad I never had my door on." Oh, yeah! it's good the door was keeping your body safely. :-) When I watched that moment I was thinking " I'm just glad the truck-man did not destroy the video by swearing and by cursing! :-)) " ha, ha, ha!
Hi Jim, love your videos man. I've watched them all. I'm about to purchase a T750 and have learned a lot already from you on some do's and in this case don'ts when operating a Bobcat. I guess nothing is idiot proof, that'd take all the fun out of it. :)
Thanks for watching! We all make mistake from time to time because like you say, nothing is idiot proof. Good luck with your new T750. Hope to see some videos of it in action.
+chris ainsworth Thanks. Yeah I agree, I broke my windshield one time and took the door off. After that I never leave it on now unless it's raining or snowing.
Oh, don't think so, I have a 463 that could have wiggled out of that, much less a T190 with 3x the power and super float with those tracks. You held it up with the bucket, then you could have walk it down with the bucket.
Great video Jim! Let us know if you ever need final drive repairs or parts...we might all just drive up and hand deliver them to you if we can stay and fish on the lake :)
FinalDriveParts.com I have contacted your office in the past about a drive motor from a T190 rebuild but I haven't heard back.....I guess it is just too much hassle shipping to Canada. Too bad, you look like a great company to do business with.
JimHowDigsDirt I apologize for that Jim, was your contact with our company in the last 6 months? We have undergone massive expansion lately tripling our operations. We do ship out of the U.S, but it can be a little hassle on both ends. We ship a lot to Canadian customers, but they usually have someone at the border that we ship to, then they drive down and pick it up in the U.S side. We are currently running rebuilding specials for T300, T190 T180 and 331 machines. If you are interested in our offer, please call John Maples, our sales manager and I will make sure we get those drives to you. 888-9-FINALS www.FinalDriveParts.com the video on the homepage explains the current offer. Thanks Jim, keep your videos coming we enjoy them!
I recently did the exact same thing on a much steeper slope! I though I was going over for sure! Also, I had about half a tank of fuel, but at that angle it moved in the tank and the engine died. I wasn't to excited about having to climb back into it after fueling all the way to try to get it unstuck. I made sure I threw some rocks under the front of the tracks so that it wouldn't tip anymore. Eventually I got out safe, with a rather large audience haha. Great vids, I'll have to use my gopro
Think it’s safe to say we have all been there running heavy equipment, I know I have lol, that’s why they make tow cables and chains, shit happens, looks like one of Spikes trucks.
Once he was able to have the seat bar all the way down the machine worked like it was supposed to. maybe you need to watch the video and appreciate he was willing to put this video up for us to view.
I can see how you got stuck in that loose fill. Check out the demo-dozer bucket for this machine. I have the same rig and the Demo-Dozer made it so much better. Just search for it. Blair
Could have driven it either way, ive pushed back in impossible mud in my CAT skidsteer using the bucket. one push with the bucket would have pushed it out backwards
New a guy who was doing some work around his pond. Enclosed cab, door closed. Drowned alone. Be careful. Stuff happens in a hurry. No promise of another day.
Unless we are winging it back after the storm, we usually try to keep our plow on the centerline when plowing snow. After lots of practice drivers can usually judge the width of the wing and come within centimeters of guardrails, poles, bridges or other objects. It's a little nerve racking at first, but becomes second nature after lots of practice!
Always happens when you push just a little further than you know you should have. I keep burrying my machines in mud when I push to get jobs done instead of waiting for ground to dry completely.
@@JimHowDigsDirt You don’t have to explain shit happens and when it does there’s always someone out there that’s going to say you should have done it this way. You know experts 😂

That would be a tight squeeze wouldn't it? I'm just glad I had my door off!
Doesn't weeping tile strips do the same thing?
The rear window has an emergency pull zip tie. Pull and escape if the door is on and your in a spot like this.

So what exactly went wrong here? Using the wrong piece of equipment or what?
Gorgeous property! Where is this?
last year on a job site my dad owns some one tipped the brand new one he just had bought all the way over though
Not how big but how many ways you can use it? LOL how ironic.
So this was a video on how to NOT operate a skid steer loader?! Lift you bucket and drive forward at the same time an drive donw the bank! Dah!
Life SHOULD teach you this type of lesson.
Agree w you Danny hahaha..I think was he's first day driving a bobcat lmao
Then there is the inch worm option using the hydraulics to go back up out of a hole. I have an old MELROW 444 I could work circle around this guy,
The material in his bucket was too
Heavy, he would have ended up going over the front.
