I remember him sitting in my lounge room (Canberra, Australia) finely cutting garlic under olive oil and preparing a "genuine" Italian pasta. The "home" noodles had been travelling with him for a long time waiting to be cooked by him in a friendly kitchen. While attending to the garlic, we sat together listening to recorded performances of the Tchaikowsky violin concerto which he was scheduled to play during his Japan tour. His comments on his fingering and bowing in the work were amazing. He visualised his whole performance while preparing the pasta!
He had to be shifted from his hotel room to the Suite because there was a complaint against a crazy violinist who played non- stop for an approx. an hour before breakfast. It was Ricci playing the 24 Caprices as a morning warn up!!!
Thank you! I'm glad I can do my part in get the word out on Ricci!! He was probably one of the top 5 violinists of the century. He was also a very good friend and mentor.
I don't like these kind of comparisons (what about Menuhin, Heifetz, Stern, etc. etc.) but undoubtedly Ricci was a great and underrated violinist, with a very wide repertoire.
This is perfectly normal procedure. It would be the same if he was playing it with piano. He was not waking the conductor, just alerting him that he was ready for the orchestra to enter. The conductor was waiting for this!
There hasn't been many Ricci video's posted here, your contribution is deeply appreciated .Thanks !
