Without a doubt, this is one of the scariest video's on your channel Tony. When you were shaving with that straight razor I thought "What a nice man he was. We will miss him..." 😉 Glad that you're okay. Take care!
I've tried straight razors in the past with very little luck.... always get nicked up and miss spots.... my neighbor is a professional barber who works downtown ( Atlanta) and I've let him do it a few times in the past when I've let my beard grow, he's great.... but I can't do it myself at all lol.
I'm impressed that you attempted a straight razor shave. And no blood! I understand the nostalgia of shaving with a straight razor. But I'm just not interested in all the extra work and expense that's required to maintain and use a straight razor. But you are to be commended.
I use a shavette with disposable blades (super 77 from aliexpress) so I don't have to get good at sharpening, and only do it on my days off so I can take my time and enjoy myself. Also nice to have for body shaving and on the back of the neck (if you have someone who can help you)
My uncle was a barber. He used to come over and shave my grandfather who lived with us. He used to hold the razor like a V and only use the tip. Every Sunday pop pop got his shave.
I never have shaved with straight razor..correct me if I'm wrong... but instead of running your blade in water.. shouldn't you wipe the used cream on a towel to prevent the blade from rusting?
doubt rust would be an issue while using it. but i'm using small pieces of paper to wipe it of rather than water. it didn't seem like it rinsed of properly at all times when he did it, and if you throw the paper in the trash can your beard will not get stuck in the sink, i like not having to clean that part of the sink.
Hi Tony….if it helps I think you should watch more RUclips videos about straight razor shaving I can tell from the start that you’re not holding the razor correctly but watching the videos will give you some ideas
We need to see the supply co injector razor! Also include comparison to the oneblade core and leaf twig if possible, they're the 3 big SE Razors right now
First off thank you for taking one for the team Tony! You did extremely well and on top of it you were dealing with a full growth goatee. I haven’t tried a straight for the same reasons, it’s not my wheelhouse either. Your barber uses a shavett with a snapped in half DE blade in it. Barbers no longer use traditional straights for health reasons. Well done Tony👏🏻
A REAL straight razor would've knocked that hair off in one pass. That brand is trash. Go to BeardKnife or someone reputable who puts shave ready edges on quality razors. This brand is really turning off a lot of wet shavers and a dull blade in the hands of the inexperienced...that's dangerous.
Isn't that brand a scam? I've only purchased vintage blades. Got a Dovo, Ruffelmacher and M Jung. All are 30-50+ years old. My reasoning is mainly because there were far fewer scammers back then.
Why did you do that to yourself?! Take my advice step back and don't do it again. Need video shave wars king c 5 , proglide and fusion 5 what's better. Take care and thanks from Egypt. Name: Prof.Aser
Your razor needs a hone because it is actually dangerous to use in its present condition. Also, in order to effectively use a straight razor, you will need to learn how to operate the razor with both hands so you can keep the correct blade angle on both sides of your face. Its like playing a guitar. You don't need to be totally ambidextrous but it will be safer and quicker. Normally, I only go with the grain with a straight razor because my beard hair is like a wire brush. A straight razor is a great tool for knocking down a lot of growth without clogging, like I would get with a twin blade. Once you get the hang of the workflow, it is actually pretty fast, although it is always a mindfulness exercise. I cheat sometimes and use a cartridge razor afterwards to shave against the grain for a nice smooth finish but it can be done with the straight razor if you are patient and reapply shaving cream. You are a brave guy. It would be interesting to see you come back after a while and redo this video with more experience. There are pros who can help with the hone and strop. The danger element should be good for RUclips views.
You seem to be using the Push grip, I would recommend instead using the basic grip, and switching hands for each side of your face. Other than that, great attempt! The good thing about straight razors is the more you shave with them, the easier it becomes, so practice makes perfect
Never shaved with a straight razor myself but on youtube i would always see people pull their skin up before they shave with the straight razor just like what my barber would do when i go cut my hair.
I’m with you. I’m intrigued by the straight razor BUT have always been afraid I would slice myself open. My learning curve with a DE razor was full of nicks until I got things right. Straight razor…much more intimidating. It’s been recommended to me for keeping nice clean lines in shaping up my beard. But no thanks. I don’t trust myself with it. I’ve seen too many movies to trust anyone else with it. I’ll stick with the DE safety razor. Thank you for suffering through it for us. It was a bit of an anxiety filled video 😅.
@@averageguytested you’re the man brah ! Been enjoying your videos for over a year. I have delved deep into the archives for information. I appreciate all that you do.
I gotta say this is the most cringe worthy video I have seen in a while. Lol. Please watch some videos before you do this again. I love your videos but man oh man.
As someone who knows how to straight razor shave, you almost gave me a heart attack when I saw your hand grip and the way you put that blade to your face and a few spots I knew you didn't know what you was doing. There was a few times where I said out loud OH NO NO NO NOT LOKE THAT!!! PLEASE DONT DO THAT!!!
You had me on the edge of my seat brah! 😬😳😱🤣 Kuddos to you for trying and executing a bloodless straight razor shave 🪒 I have no clue on how to straight razor shave, but in my opinion I believe the razor needs a good honing (seemed very dull) I usually check out So Sharp David, IAMCDB and a few others on how they straight razor shave and they make it seem very easy 😬🤣😅 They usually make their lather on the wet side and they don’t rinse their razors (I believe they wipe it on a towel) they say that if you expose your razor with water and not properly dry it and oil it it can rust in the future. Thanks for the shout out brah 👍🏾🙏🏾 Have a Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽 Stay Blessed!
Tony you are better than me I am not taking the plunge to a straight razor like you I would have to learn a whole new way of shaving I'll stick to my de razor
Hey brother, isn't the main problem with that shave that you had way too much length on your beard for a wet shave? Surely it should be clipped back short enough so that hair is not overlapping lower hairs! I've only started watching your videos and in other videos your growth is WAY shorter going into the shave! I would never dream of wet shaving with that length!
Thanks for watching, Chris! I believe the issues I was having with this shave were 1. A dull blade 2. Poor technique. I just used a shavette recently with much better results. A well honed blade should cut through most any beard growth like a hot knife 🔪 through butter 🧈
Buen día. Hay un canal de You Tube en español llamado Las Navajas de Verda Krajono en el cual el señor enseña como afeitarse correctamente con una navaja. También enseña técnicas para asentar y afilar una navaja
Although I'm not an avid straight razor shaver, from what I can tell your technique seems to be fairly fine for a first go. Perhaps maybe a slight adjustment in angle would help. The main thing I notice is the edge appears that it could use a sharpening and might not be properly shave ready.
Right on! It's always a good day when you upload a video. The straight razor is a whole different beast. I find that both traditional straight razors (like the one you used here) and shavette straight razors (where you insert half of a DE blade or a proprietary SE blade) tug a little bit. Maybe my technique isn't quite right, but oh well. I do it for fun every now and then. For not watching any tutorials or doing any other kind of research, you did pretty well. Your angle did seem a little too shallow, which might be why you had such a hard time cutting off the hair of your goatee. If you do decide to try the straight razor again, try using a slightly steeper angle. Aside from that, your use of little to no pressure was very good, and it showed. Only one minor cut during your first straight razor shave? That's impressive! Keep up the good work!
Thanks, my friend! I really didn’t enjoy the shave so I’m not sure I’ll be back for a bit, but I had to try it. People are telling me that the blade I used needed to be sharpened- so I may try a shavette next go around.

This video brings back memories of my first straight razor (SR) shave about three years ago. Ever since then, I have been shaving daily with a SR and still thoroughly enjoy it. The SR you have is a rebadged Titan of VG10-HZ steel made in Taiwan, probably Titan's least popular model. Titan manufacture reasonably good SRs. Their SRs of ACRM steel and ACRO steel are much better. Judging from your video, the blade's edge was nowhere near shave-ready. Please get your SR professionally honed by someone who shaves daily with a SR. A truly shave-ready edge will make all the difference for you.
And that is why I stick with DE lol. Not as intimidating as a straight razor, and they're way easier to use and cheaper IMO. You don't need to buy strops or wet stones or send it out to be sharpened, just gotta send 10 to 15 bucks one or twice a year for your favorite DE blades.
