- Welcome to the fifth day of my Culturally Immersive ASL trip to Gallaudet. I am a hearing college student learning ASL!
Let's reflect back to March 2020: PRE-COVID
I'm spending a week without any speaking---all of my communication will through using ASL only!
Here in my fifth day, we are visiting the first and only ASL Starbucks in America! Wow-what an experience! All of the staff must be fluent in ASL and all orders are made in ASL! I absolutely loved visiting the ASL Starbucks, definitely one of my favorite parts of the trip!
We also had an awesome Scavenger Hunt on Gallaudet University Campus! We had to search for different buildings, landmarks, sculptures, etc. It really helped me get a layout of the campus as well as learn more about the unique parts of the University.
My favorite part was definitely the ASL Starbucks, as an ASL student, this is such an incredible opportunity for me. It also helped me recognize the need for deaf space and visual focus.
Note: I’m still learning ASL, my signs and grammar are not perfect. Thank you for your patience.

that's actually really cool that you attended just before shut down!
This is actually really interesting to learn about and see as a hearing person! I wish others would also educate themselves on this and create more inclusive environments just like this.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My daughter is hearing and is thinking about attending Gallaudet for their ASL program. I’m afraid it may be too overwhelming for her but after seeing your video, I feel a little more at ease. Did you end up attending the university?
