Laughable is a bit overblown. The Os have the best farm system in the league, and it isn’t close. Just because they don’t give up their best prospect doesn’t mean it isn’t a great deal. Padres had a monster farm in 2019. Number 1 farm and like 7-8 top 100 prospects. Then kept that farm loaded when they turned the corner with CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell, Luis Campusano, Mackenzie Gore, James Wood, Jackson Merrill, Esteury Ruiz, Eguy Rosario, Robert Gasser, and Jarlin Susana… and by 2023 they had a $256M payroll and missed the playoffs. Now they’re a .500 team who are getting worse and have a mid-tier farm (though mostly because Merrill just graduated from a prospect).
You can absolutely have a machine and fail. The fans that want the team to go “all in” need to need to realize that Elias didn’t build this franchise up from the gutter to risk it all for 1 WS. He wants a window where the team is perpetually a contender and a WS favorite. That means not going over his deemed value in FA signings (Burnes will not be returning), drafting according to their models (no Brecht) and not trading away prospects that could jeopardize the future of the team. Maybe he pulls the trigger on these deals, but if he doesn’t I wouldn’t be shocked.

So he’s sort of on his last life regarding injuries. Tigers would be smart to get a haul back before the inevitable happens for the flame thrower. Pitchers break easily as you see across the league. Even the great ones. The recovery rate for pitchers with two TJ surgeries are not good. Sure he has multiple years of control but if the Tigers keep him and down the line he gets surgery again isn’t the same like Buehler then they will have missed their chance to get a haul. You could add DePaula and Rushing into a trade for Skubal, and the Tigers would still say “no thanks”. Neither is ranked that high on national publications top 100 lists. Fans always over rate their team’s prospects, and think they should be untouchable. I believe the Tigers will want a top prospect to head a trade, like top 10 overall, I believe they will ask for Holliday (1), but settle for Basallo (12) as the head liner. Not a guy ranked no higher than in the 40s, like Rushing. We are talking about a young Cy Young contender, but you want to give up a bunch of guys that are not performing, good luck with that.

Let's suppose that Orioles get Skubal, the team could look for another pitcher like Erick Fedde or a little bit better pitcher (maybe Texas Rangers could be the answer) because Dean Kremer does not guarantee anything for being a playoff pitcher.

That trade suggestion is outrageous and the Orioles better not do it. The only pitcher on the market worth any prospects for us is Mason Miller because he’s under control till 2030 and he’s ridiculous. We are a young team that doesn’t need to be in win now mode. We just need to sign Burnes and that’s it. If we do, next year, going into October, our 4 man rotation would be Burnes, Bradish, Means and Rodriguez and you’d have Miller and Bautista as the back of your bullpen with Bautista being a 6 out save guy all day. Then your position players are Holliday, Mayo, Norby, Basallo, Stowers, Hays, Mullins, Santander, O’Hearn, Mountcastle, Henderson, Rutschman, Kjerstad, Cowser, Westburg. That’s 15 guys that can turn a good pitch they’re looking for into a souvenir and a mistake just the same. And a lead after 6 is all but guaranteed to be a win with those two, that would be the best 1-2 relief punch I’ve ever seen. That bullpen would win a few World Series behind this lineup and an above average rotation like our’s where are ace matches up with any ace, and then our 2-4 match up with any #2, but are head and shoulders above just about any 3-4 pitcher on any team. I’d let a couple guys go for Miller, that’s it though. I’d give up Bradfield Jr, and a few 1st/2nd round pick guys like Beavers, Horvath, Fabian. Hell, I’d overload it, I’d do all of those guys plus Povich and McDermott, and I’d be okay with Norby/Stowers being included as well. Norby, Stowers and Bradfield Jr for Miller is a really good deal for Oakland, and I’d be willing to kick in Hays, Mateo and Urias as well as Povich and McDermott in whatever combination to close the deal. All 6 of those positions players would likely be starting for Oakland right now with the exception of Bradfield who might need another year in the minors before the A’s could call him big league ready. And they’re all studs. Hays, Norby, Stowers all have video game minor league numbers, hays is a proven talent in the bigs and still very young, Stowers has been a near 300 hitter in a small sample size, and Norby’s first hit was a homer in a real small sample size. Those 3 guys could turn Oakland into a winning ball club because they already have some really great young players, but they’re missing that winner mentality, big league experience and polish. Ultimately, the bottom line is, they all have the potential to hit 285-300 in the show and they all have 20+ HR power, none of them are base cloggers, but Stowers and Hays have well above average base stealing speed. That’s 3 big league ready pieces with big upside potential for a team that has scored runs at the lowest rate in baseball this year. Not to mention Bradfield Jr who has all the makings of a top 50 prospect in all of MiLB as he progresses through the minors. And it’s all for a closer! A bullpen pitcher! A guy you see for 1 inning at a time, a few days a week, for guys that will not only be in their lineup, but they will fill out the top of half of it. The more I think about it, the more nervous it makes me because I feel like the A’s would become a winning team and it would be with half of their positions being occupied by Orioles. But Miller would turn us into a straight up World Series winner next year. Especially if the O’s go crazy this winter and sign Burnes and Fried. That pushes Wells, Suarez and Kremer to the bullpen with Miller, Bautista, Cano, Coulombe and Perez. With Burnes, Fried, Bradish, Means, Rodriguez as your rotation, this would be the most complete team in baseball. By a landslide. Dare I say, we would take a shot at Seattle’s regular season wins record.

As a lifelong Orioles fan, I'd move the three guys you listed for Skubal and be happy about it. Cowser is an okay outfielder who has had a lot of struggles this year and last. Basallo is very young and will likely be a star catcher but we have a star catcher already. Someone named Adley Rutschman if you haven't heard of him. I understand long-term availability of catchers isn't great, but we like Adley for his bat whether that be at catcher, first base or DH. Bradish isn't coming back until mid to late 2025 and he's not under contract for that year which leaves us with Grayson Rodriguez as the ace when Burnes leaves. Not an ideal top of the rotation guy right now imo. That plus the log jam of elite position players the Orioles have in their system with no path to playing in the league, that move makes perfect sense.

Not moving Norby, Mayo, Basallo, Kjerstad, Cowser, Bradfield Jr or Holliday. For Mason Miller I’d consider some of these guys but for Skubal, fresh off Tommy John and injury prone as it is. I’m fine. O’s are a 100+ win ball club as it stands. We’re good either way. O’s have the leverage. What are Tigers going to do? Keep Skubal and let him hit free agency with a weak farm system?
I’ve said this before. O’s top 8 prospects are better than Max Clark. Stowers, Beavers would both instantly be Detroits #1 prospect and McDermott would supplement the farm. That’s a more fair trade. You get your corner outfields with high slugging and power and a projected 2 or 3 in the rotation.
Just because the Orioles have these pieces doesn’t mean then need to be shown the door. Norby, Basallo and Mayo aren’t blocked either. Basallo will DH and play first for a couple years until Rutch splits time. No reason to part with these studs for a guy we can even guarantee will be on the field. Birds have 8-10 years to contend

I'd go Mountcastle, Cowser, and Johnson.

Mounty doesn't have the trade value of Basallo. It's about a 45 BTV value difference.

@RollingWithRoc You're right! Monty has another year, and both Cowser and Johnson have 5 years, and there's your difference.

as a tigers fan Inwoopdnt even consider trading skubal for anyone short of a deal another team would never offer... like gunnar and holiday... skubap is the guy you hope to get when you trade stars. the tigers gave up 6 top prospects for kiggy and only one of em ended up being even decent... as a bullpen arm.

Should run it again jim, for the Dodgers trade put baez in the deal. They can run the same thing they did to get mookie. Take on a bad contract to lessen the price of the main piece.

the trade package is laughable no way that happens - the trade starts with mayo and holiday or i don’t even entertain anything
