  • The struggles of being self taught... but hey, learn from your mistakes, right! I recently learned I mixed up the names for deckle and mould in at least two videos! But the info out there is not super straight forward, so I went down the rabbit hole researching deckle and moulds and figured I'd take you guys on the journey too!

You probably came across this information anyways, but just wanted to let you know:
i guess this word (deckle) comes from german.
A "Deckel" is something you put on top of pots, pans, buckets, toilets. It means "lid", and since the most credit of inventing the paper press goes to johannes gutenberg, who was german,
it would make sense that it just means "lid", which is the top part

Well as a German with the word "Deckel" in her vocabulary, which just means cover, lid or top, I'm just gonna ignorantly assume that the deckle is on top.

So the deckle frames the sheet but the wire cloth w/ thicker wires for the water mark is the mold?

Mold sets the sheet form(and virtually it can be any contour), deckle is a mesh sieve and flat to disperse material evenly.

So for a newbie, what is the purpose of it? I just ordered a frame yesterday without the deckle part because I couldn't see how that extra cost would be of any use for me. Did I make a poor choice?

The purpose is to give the paper a more consistent shape. There are several other versions that allow for multiple smaller sheets to be made.

My heart tells me the top layer should be the mould since it forms the shape of the paper, but my brain knows the German definition for deckel is top
