Especially when Cas enters and is injured from trying to get past Gabriel, it's a metaphor, which goes along with the main theme of the episode. The humor is performative and a sheen applied to the cold hard truth of reality. And it's interesting this is the method Gabriel uses to get this point across to the boys. He's treating them like characters. Which of course he would, his father god taught him these guys are characters that are supposed to play their roles. So also the reality an angel makes to get that point across is a cheap imitation of the real thing, the world which god created as a stage for his characters.
