This week’s film breakdown analyzes ex Los Angeles Rams Quarterback Jared Goff and why he was traded for ex Detroit Lions Quarterback Matthew Stafford. A lot transpired with Goff and Rams coach Sean McVay and after a wild roller coaster ride of success and failure, the Rams traded Goff for Matthew Stafford. Why and how did Goff regress? And how good will Stafford be as his replacement? This episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze past and present Rams Quarterbacks Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford.

Being a Die-Hard rams fan, Jared Goff had his best years when defenses hadn't caught onto what the rams were doing as far as offensive playcalling. He had a runningback who could take over the game every play he was on the field, this is what was used to help manipulate defenses. There was also the fact that Rodger Saffold, Andrew Whitworth, John Sullivan etc... He had an amazing o-line, an incredible runningback etc... Mcvays playcalls were very different than the rest of the nfl, so the rams could cruise through defenses easily. When Mcvays system was figured out vs the bears and pats, what goff relied on for many years was over. Goff does well when he is playing in the right system. He isnt the best quarterback when it comes to having the game all on him or defenses sending pressure all the time! IT was figured out that defenses could send 0 covereges to scare goff into bad decisions. When the offensive line regressed, and Todd Gurley was not the same. The pressure was on Goff to make plays through the pressure of the defenses always sending blitzes. Goff has a hard time adjusting to things being more on him to make plays that the great ones make. Reading defenses also became a problem that showed because he would get confused before a play thinking its cover 2, and it was an all out blitz. This is just a summary of what i know. I would tell you more but you get the point!

Goff was a product of McVay's innovative system. He didn't hardly have to think at all, McVay was quite literally doing it for him. But any time he had to do it himself or when the run game wasn't working, he panicked. He's just dumb

    • @camoOC

@@falconhoward4032 I don’t know if he’s actually dumb (maybe you’re right 🤷🏻‍♂️) but as a Rams fan he always came off as lazy to me. I just can’t picture him being in his cave studying film all off season and trying to increase his football IQ, like the greats do, but maybe this move to Detroit will put a fire under his ass. Hard to have a fire under your ass when you’ve already been paid like that though.

Lifelong Lions fan here. I'm suspicious (and hoping) that the problem in LA for Goff was actually McVay. As an outsider, it just seems like McVay caught the NFL off balance, and has never recovered since being figured out. I just don't understand why all the problems got dumped on Goff and everyone is still thinking McVay is this offensive genius even though his offense has been junk since the SB run.
Any of you Rams fans have a take on that?

@@RamsHouse102 Since you have a rundown on Goff, I'll give you my take on Stafford (if you're interested).
Stafford has more arm talent than just about every other QB in the league. I've seen him on the field with everyone (including Rodgers twice every season) and Stafford always gives you a puncher's chance. He trusts his arm, and will throw into tight windows and good coverage if he thinks there is an edge his way. He'll make 5-10 throws every year that will make you check your jaw for looseness.
He's a slow starter, but is a top tier clutch player when given the opportunity. He's tough as hell and will play through injury... even to his and the team's detriment. Lack of effort will never be a problem.
Matthew is a great community guy, good teammate and won't embarrass the organization off the field. He lacks the internal fire of top level winners though and comes off as a "company man" and as more of an employee than most athletes.
Loved having him as our QB all these years, but I'm not sure he's a great fit for the Rams personality wise. Detroit is a town that loves mild-mannered superstars, and how he handles the hype of LA is going to be the most interesting part of this whole thing to me.

      @cdjhyoung 2 года назад +3

@@f3arlessl3gend82 I was thinking in terms that signing with the Lions means you will never be in a Super Bowl Game. The last HOF player for Detroit to play in a Championship game was Joe Schmidt. That Championship game was in 1957. He then suffered through most of the 60's watching the Lions go nowhere at the end of the season. Even when Joe Schmidt became coach, and he was a good one, he got the team to 10-4 a still didn't make the post season. As for talent that came here and never made it to the Super Bowl: Karras, Lucci, two Saunders, the tight end from the 60's and the greatest Lion of all, Barry. Herman Moore, Mega Tron, even Suh, as screwed up as he was, deserved better than being trapped on a Lions team. Detroit has seen HOF talent play for the Lions, but none of them got what every great competitor strive for: a chance in the Championship game.
So my point is: No matter how good Goff is or isn't, he is doomed to failure simply because of the franchise he has been dealt to. He will leave town a rich man, but he has seen the only Super Bowl from the playing field he ever will. Unless he gets traded again.
I wish Mathew Stafford all the luck in the world. He deserves a Championship.

I know it's premature to contemplate how far Matthew Stafford will take the Rams in the NFL near and distant future. There are way too many analysts(professional and otherwise) that put too much stock in Wins and Losses. Stafford has played in and lost 3 playoff games, while Trent Dilfer has won a Super Bowl. So exactly what is that supposed to tell us?! It tells me a bottom of the Totem Pole QB can win a SB if he has a competent offense and an amazing defense, while a Top Tier QB can go an entire career without any post-season success when the rest of his team couldn't care less. A wise man once said "You have to learn how to lose before you can learn how to win". At least I think that's what was said. Anyway, Stafford has always done his job and then some. Defenses rarely stopped his passing game, even though they went almost 4.5 seasons(70 consecutive games) without a 100 yard rusher, Stafford was able to sling the rock all over the field, keeping them in most games. That's without a decent O-Line as well. The Rams can easily win a SB if the team doesn't let Stafford down the way MY Lions did. Good luck Rams fans. #StaffordsMyQB

@@jayh3433 I felt that Jerrod Goff got the short end of the stick lol I mean he's not great either but he can be very good at times but the whole trade too me was strange but you're spot on about the situation I just said Stafford was great but it wasn't that I was saying he was Brady or Montana level great help yeah he's good but I think finding greatness isn't as easy as many may think; I mean everyone would like to Have Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady but the reality is their is only one of each of those players lol

Hopefully we get lucky like the Bengals did with Burrows and Chargers did with Herbert. Lions made the worst mistake drafting Okudah over Herbert

I've always loved Matt Stafford. I really hope he has a great season. I'm so glad he finally has a great coach and a good team around him. The Rams are looking pretty good. Still I wonder if consistantly giving up all of these picks will catch up to them at some point.

They just keep kicking the can down the road. They've been pretty lucky with injuries with their higher paid guys, so if at some point that catches up with them it will be really bad

As sure as Amen in church! Stafford is not that kind of QB/missing piece winning over Bucs, Chiefs, Bills, Packers... maybe Seahawks, Titans. Just to think they could have gotten Brady and skipped for a year later for such a bogus deal after numerous throw away future trades. As shitty as that joke of jackass logo. Change never needed; but if do it 5x better!

This aged well. Stafford got what he deserved after playing at such a high level all these years.

Stafford is a member of a Super Bowl champs team in LA. He made Great plays to take them to a SB run!
