WHY IS THE WATER BLUE? | BANFF ON CANADA DAY!? | TRUCK ISSUES | JASPER AND THE ROAD TO ALASKA Ep22

  • We say goodbye to our friends in Bozeman and make our way to Flathead, MT, where we find the most beautiful Walmart views ever! We stock up for our journey through Canada and head toward our first border crossing in Carway. We were told by the border guard that we were just in time for Canada Day. Bad timing on our part!
    We plan on staying at a first come, first served campground in Banff, but a road closure knocked that one off the list. We try to get a glimpse of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise with the RV in tow. Because of the Canada Day crowds, roads were shut down to traffic. We stopped at Lake Louise Campground to see if there were any cancelations. Though there were no spots available, we were told about free boondocking at the Lake Louise over flow lot just 24 minutes from the lakes.
    That night we caught up with Dan and Lindsay from Follow Your Detour and hiked Johnston Canyon! The falls and suspended trail along the rock walls looking over the glacial river was phenomenal!
    Link to Follow Your Detour's website:
    www.followyour...
    We get up early the next morning for sunrise at Moraine Lake with donuts and coffee! Moraine Lake was everything we imagined it would be and more. Unfortunately, on our way there, we got a check engine light on the truck. We go to check out Lake Louise, but it was packed, and Corey couldn’t focus until we figured out what was wrong with the truck.
    Nothing was open because of Canada Day, so we search for a scan tool and then are asked about OnStar. We signed up and got a diagnosis on the truck in 10 minutes. It was just an emissions code: P21DD. We plan to get it fixed at a GMC dealership in Anchorage, Alaska. We leave Banff and head to Jasper feeling much better about towing our home all the way to Alaska.
    Jasper offered beautiful mountain ranges, aqua water and the Columbia Ice Fields for us to explore! We hike up to Athabasca Glacier and take in the wonder of its sheer size! We build cairns at the base of the glacier and head off to finish our 10 hour drive day of over 500 miles. We stop many times along the way, but one of our favorites was Athabasca Falls where we hiked through old river beds. We reach Fort St. John and make plans for Liard Hot Springs!
    Stay tuned for next week’s episode where we head toward Liard Hot Springs and cross the boarder into Alaska! Thanks for watching! Don’t forget to like and subscribe and click on the bell icon for notifications when we release new videos!

    Seeing the blue waters of Banff in photos for so many years, put it at the top of our Bucket List. It certainly lived up to our expectations! Have you ever been disappointed by something you had on your bucket list? Hope we have some Austin Powers fans on here! 😂

    Wonderful video!! We are really enjoying your northern adventure, it's so beautiful!! Just an fyi, the "rockpiles" you see all over Canada are called Inukshuk. They let you know that someone has been there before you and you're not alone! They were initially used by the Inuit people, and were used as a marker for navigation; and they signified hope and friendship. Happy travels! 😊

    Did you know that many overpasses in the Banff area were specially built wildlife overpasses like at 6:44 in your video to entice & protect wildlife crossing the highways more safely. There are some cool youtube videos on it & its cut down 80% of collisions. I love watching others experience our beautiful Alberta :) Jasper & Alaska are on my bucket list. Safe travels.

  • @LowsJuan

    Lake Louise was named after the 4th daughter of Queen Victoria Princess Louise Caroline Alberta. So now you know where Alberta got it's name also. Too bad you didn't stop in Jasper as it is the less commercial version (cheaper) of the Rocky Mountain National Parks. The upside was you got to see the Icefield Parkway hwy 93 that runs between Banff and Jasper. I think its one of the things that all Canadians should see before they die.

When we were in Banff area, we went to Peyto Lake. It was further away, not as crowded and unbelievably beautiful. The water is bright turquoise. Safe travels always!

    Being Canadian, I've been through much of what you've shown before, and always look forward to going again, albeit, it's the crowds that deter me, not the location. Banff & Jasper are just hard to beat, of all the places we've been to, albeit my wife does love Yellowstone as well, and we've yet to see the Smokey Mountains or Tetons! At the end of this, it looks like you're in Dawson Creek's Walmart, as I've been through that town every year since the '80's, as I use to go hunting for moose/elk well in off the Alaska highway in years past! My wife & I have been to Alaska twice...the first time right up the Dempster highway (Yukon) to Inuvik, then back down to Alaska where we toured it as best we could (this was a few decades ago) and then went back up 3 years ago for another tour. That was with our truck and slide in camper, and now we've got a diesel pusher motorhome, of which we may go again in a year or two, as it truly is a beautiful state! Gosh, just thinking, I believe the last video of yours I watched was when you where in Florida....so I bet I've got a lot of catching up to do! By the way, I love your family, your camera work and editing....oh, and music, just well done, so thanks so much for taking us on these adventures! Stay safe, be kind and hasta la vista 'for now'! :)

    Sounds like u guys had a bit of a challenging time in my home of Canada. Hopefully you got try our fav coffee and donuts from Tim Hortons. Those shots of the water & mountains...wow! Breathtaking. I know I'm watching older stuff but I enjoy watching you guys. It's honestly better than what's on TV these days. Glad the check engine light was minor. Ya the emission stuff they loading on the newer diesels..... well.... that's another story..

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  3 года назад +1

      It was a little nerve wracking at first with the check engine light as we were about to travel all the way up into Alaska! We actually had a Tim Hortons in our home town in Maine, the owners of it lived in our neighborhood 😃 I’m really stoked to hear your enjoying the old stuff, its old but still huge part of our story! I’m sure some of those videos are rough on the editing side🙈 the emissions on these trucks is killing them. The “fix” is causing more pollution in the long run. Trucks are not lasting as long, more replacement parts are needing to be manufactured, a whole new industry with massive accompanying waste was created ( def fluid) . More fuel then necessary is required. It’s absurd, but “ they” did something...

    The overflow camping at Lake Louise is actually 11$ Canadian unless something changed. :) There's a self pay kiosk not far from where you parked between you and the shuttle parking lot. That was mid September last year. Hey at least you got to see it. I got there and spent the night after driving up that day from SE of Kalispell MT. I hit flurries before arriving and almost snagged a spot but they said camper was too long 25". They were cool and let me dump my tanks though. I left the next morning around 6-7 in heavy snow flurries. It got worse up at the lake and you could barley make out the boathouse where they rent the canoes. There was a whole tour group of Japanese visitors taking pictures of a lake you couldn't see. I had paid for another night but the temps were hovering around freezing and my battery/propane may have struggled through another night. The forecast according to the ranger was more of this for next couple days so I left for the panhandle of Idaho. The skies cleared and it warmed up when I got to Radium Springs. Maybe next time :)

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  5 лет назад

      caverbrad oh man , that sounds miserable, mostly because you couldn’t see the lake! I’m a little sick to my stomach, it is $11! I’m cheap but I don’t steal... I would have gladly paid $11, we thought it was a super convenient spot! We never saw any kiosk, and the guy at lake Louis told us it was a free spot... we even talked to the same attendants over the course of a couple days in the lot trying to get shop recommendations...

    • @caverbrad
      @caverbrad 5 лет назад +1

      Well it isn't marked real well and the info on the kiosk faces the shuttle area which is dumb. I assumed it was free too yet I saw people walking over to the kiosk and investigated it myself. Hey one night was covered by me as I left a day early. :) On my return trip to the US the next day I got inspected but they offered me a free bundle of firewood someone was trying to take into Canada. LOL

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  5 лет назад +1

      Our One Life good, an Austin Powers fan😃 I really couldn’t say about resources, I just picked up a camera an ran with it. Start with how it works, it’s all about light.. don’t shoot in auto, learn what the 4 main camera settings mean. 1 Aperture that’s how much light is going to the sensor, the lower the number the less things will be in focus and less shutter speed is needed(you want a lens that can shoot at at least f2.8 for low light and you want to shoot landscapes at around f9) 2 Shutter speed , that’s how long the sensor needs to be exposed to light to expose a photo properly. That’s where an f2.8 lens comes in handy if you’re shooting at night or low light situation. Too slow of a shutter speed is how blurry photos are born😱🙈 3 ISO, the lower the number the more light is needed the cleaner the image will be. The higher the number less light will be needed, the higher the number the more grainy the image will be, there’s lots of trade offs in photography. 4 is white balance, the color tone of an image. Our eyes adjust infinitely the camera only has one shot at it. Daylight is 6500 k the old incandescent bulbs for instance are 2700k (soft white) you want to make sure you’re shooting at the right temperature so your colors look normal. An example of this would be a photo of indoors and have part of the outside in the scene as well, the inside will most likely be more orange looking then you want and the out side look too blue. You should just leave white balance in auto unless your images start to look too blue or too orange then manually change it. That’s the super dumbed down version of how the basics work, and there’s zero grammar back there so good luck😳 now I’m not saying you have to go around shooting in full manual all the time but you want to know how things work. I personally shoot in Aperture priority mode, I pick the aperture (f stop number) I set my iso , the camera picks the shutter speed and I set my white balance to auto. From there I use exposure compensation to let the camera know I prefer things under slightly under exposed . You can get shadows back but once you have a nightlight that data is gone and can’t be recovered. Hope some of that made sense😃 feel free to ask any other specific questions as well. Basically just get out there, shoot and learn from it😎

      AlliChuck Adventures we are all about splurging for something really amazing like canoeing Lake Louise and if it had been for 2 hours, we would have but 30 minutes wouldn’t have gotten us anywhere!

    When I saw “truck issues” in the title I knew it was a check engine light and KNEW it was the def system. Cleaning the environment 1 plastic jug and cardboard box at a time. Hey we have particles and nox gas in the exhaust, let’s inject something else into the hot exhaust and burn that.....INSANE.
