    I think some people forget that Sumetal has been performing for at least 16 years. She may be 25 but most performers are in their 30s and even 40s before they have her experience. Baby Metal have been at it for a decade. Lots of practice and excellent people around them makes all the difference. Hope they make it to America again soon. They opened my eyes to metal and as a 60 plus person I am glad they did. Now I have to get my old buddies to give it a chance

    I definitely agree that BabyMetal is not a band to judge based off of just one song. If I was going to recommend a song to react to, it'd be Rondo of Nightmare live from the Budokan show. It really showcases the skill of the band and of Su-Metal!!!

    Great Reaction! Koba, the producer of BABYMETAL, has long worked with metal bands mainly on independent labels at the record company he joined upon graduation from college. He spent more than a decade of hardship there, but eventually the metal division was discontinued because it was unprofitable.
    He had been a diehard metal fan since his school days and refused to switch to trendy music. The company that hired him could not unilaterally fire him under Japanese law, so they placed him in a small kids' talent department. If you don't like it, quit on your own.
    But he took his job seriously, focusing on children's food and working with the local government to educate children about proper diet (shoku-iku) through music. It was not glamorous at all, a humble job, but he took it seriously. But then he discovers a girl with a unique talent. She had a strong, penetrating voice that could make any song deviate from the norm. She was BABYMETAL's lead vocalist, Suzuka Nakamoto. Everything started from there.
    The song was about how to make "Soltam," a typical Thai salad with papaya, and was rapped in Thai by F.HIRO, another famous Thai rapper. He raps that the more you pound the ingredient, green papaya, the tastier it gets. It's just like life. F.HIRO was also beaten up a lot by his fans when he participated in the collaboration for this song. But the result was a worldwide hit. babymetal has always been like this. Even now, they are still being beaten up. But they are getting bigger every day because of it.

    Thanks again from Japan. I am a 67-yo Japanese retired guy. At BABYMETAL concerts, you can find many people who are apparently older than me. (And infants, too) The only problem with BM concert with aged audience is a sore shoulder in the morning after. It is very hard to keep swinging towel above your head for 4 minutes all along to this song. It is amazingly fun, though 🤣

      @@armromza8899 Hi! Thai fan! F. Hero came all the way to Japan for the world premiere of this song and he had been very nervous to perform at a huge arena in foreign country. At the actual show, Su-Metal shouted "Come on F. Hero!" to summon him and she screamed "Thank you F. Hero!" at the end of this song. Then the three girls bowed deeply towards him to show their respect. That scene makes me happy.

    _Matsuri da!_ 🦊🤘🍠
    Welcome back to the Foxhole.
    Nice job to keep spreading the Fox God word and always is a pleasure to hear wise man with musical production knowledge talking about BabyMetal.
    Babymetal never have afraid of trying something new.
    In this case they are mixing thai rap with BabyMetal unique sound, although this is audio album track over a live performance video. Of course with the Kami Band playing behind this song is even better. Since BMRR channel doesn't got that one, you can find a decent live compilation version at "who?" channel if you want to listen this again with live sound.
    This is a party festival summer song (Matsuri da), especially for season like this in Japan nowadays, they're actually singing about papaya salad and mixing with other things as an allegory of life to enjoy mixing different stuff, in this case the thai and japanese culture. Papaya is a fruit.
    F.Hero is a thai rapper and he rap about that in his part. Waving your towel while dancing and singing is a must and the girls love that.
    This song belongs to 3rd album but this one as well many more songs are exploring a different Babymetal side, sometimes more mature, but trying to not lose their fun. This one belongs to the Light Side disc of that concept álbum.
    The footage of this was took from BABYMETAL AWAKENS: The Sun Also Rises 2019 in Yokohama Arena Japan, F.Hero was invited for this, the night before he was really in panic with the amount of people and even throwing out after the show, It ain't easy to face that crowd, especially after receiving some negative critics from BM fans who didn't like his participation on this, fortunately he felt good and received a warming welcome. Also that night introducing the _avengers_ system, a group of three backup dancers filling the third spot that YuiMetal left (she leaves the group in 2018). They rotate so not always you'll see the same one on stage, usually the live official MV is with Kano Fujihira, she started this when having 14 years old, so young like our girls back in their early days. None of them have mic or sing and aren't official members, they just dance.
    Next recommendation for your friends following with Metal Galaxy era:
    - "Kagerou" with the Kami Band intro live at Legend Metal Galaxy 2020, you can find this at BMRR, or...
    - "Distortion" live at Download Festival 2018.
    Funny thing you talked about listen BM in a car while someone next to you is watching you, it reminds a short video with certain actor from a movie that received a CD recommendation about listen metal music and then going to his car and listen that CD with BM must while people from car just right next to him is lifting the window lmao😆🤘
    Btw nice Star Trek sweater.
    Thanks for coming back and see you next time with more BM songs.🦊🤘🔥

    Great reaction. This was filmed in Yokohama on the second night at the start of their 2019 tour. F Hero is a rapper from Thailand, he flew in to Japan specially to perform on for those first two nights.
    He got a lot of grief online from idiots saying he "wasn't worthy" to play with BABYMETAL (whatever happened to the idea of 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai'?) and even thought of pulling out and having his part taken out of the song altogether, but on the night he got a great reception. He has said that he was so nervous that he went and threw up after coming off stage.
    As this was the official video it had the studio audio, there is compilation video mostly of this performance with the live audio (it is even better), so part of what you missed here was Su-metal calling out to welcome F Hero to the stage.
    This is definitely a feel good party song ... 'PA PA YA' is a summer festival (matsuri-da I think they say - something like that) song - about a spicy green papaya fruit salad. F Hero was rapping in Thai to the same rhythm as mixing the ingredients for the salad with a mortar and pestle.
    They are pretty much saying that, much like the salad, mixing the right spices into life will make that better too.
    The third girl in this video was one of three dancers brought in to take turns filling the third spot in the choreo after Yui left the band in October 2018. This was Kano's very first show with BABYMETAL - she was still only 14 years old.
    If you see BABYMETAL live remember to take a towel (or buy one from the merch stand) to swing around your head for this song. Seeing everybody doing that makes Su and Moa happy ... and we all want them to be happy all the time. 🦊
    You are absolutely right about how tiring going to watch them is - at the end you walk out sweating and exhausted, but you will have the biggest, most stupid grin on your face. 😁

Based on the talent and incredible stage presence of the lead singer . The big company did not think it would work , but through the talent of the 3 young girls it succeeded from playing food halls at festivals and small venues to what you see now and are even better sounding live and as you said an experience to be there . No messing about in studio or with mv with sound or making performance look better .

"PA PA YA!!" is a dance song with an underlying massage of striving for personal excellence, collaboration with a very well known Thailand rapper from Chiang Rai name Natthawut Srimok nickname Golf but known popularly by his stage name F.HERO (Fukking Hero) and specialise in the Hip-Hop and Rap genre. Some remarks in Thai lyric translation part:
    Molam= Thai-Isan local music
    "Papaya -Pok-Pok= Thai pun phrase means Som-Tam, Thai food made up from papaya-chopped mix up with chilli, tomato, garlic, palm sugar, lots of vegetable and others depends on varies area. Then hired an A++ band to back them (Kami(God) Band) and the agency Amuse has an army of people to help create the stages and lighting. Everything is top quality, and the producer doesn't go cheap an anything. Do BABYMETAL- HEADBANGER LIVE LEGEND 1997

    Good reaction and well done introducing Babymetal to different people. There is no denying they do mix pop in with the metal (and other genres), but unlike the Spice Girls where a formula was used with an identified and pre-determined audience almost guaranteed to sell records and they found 5 girls to fill the preordained spots, Babymetal was formed entirely around the talents of the 3 girls, in particular the lead vocalist Su-metal. There was no known audience for what they were going to do and the agency provided no extra budget above what they were providing for the parent Idol group - none of which was set aside for Babymetal.
    Where the Spice Girls' label provided all the money and support they needed in order that they would succeed, Babymetal's agency thought the producer was mad, that anything related to or involving metal would simply not work and that this would be a short lived and failed experiment. They allowed him his pet project only because there was no financial risk to the agency ... mainly because they provided no extra money to get it started.

    ⚡ 💕 / 🌶 🌞
    This is a Summer festival party song. Matsuri Da! (It's a festival!)
    I wasn't aware of him before this collaboration, but F.HERO is a well known rapper in Thailand.
    His rap was all in Thai.
    The lyrics in the rap section use papaya salad as a metaphor for life.
    It's spicy and sweet, but you have to crush the spices in a mortar to bring out the flavor. : )
    BABYMETAL's producer Koba went to Thailand to record F.HERO's track for 'PA PA YA!!'.
    He suggested adding accents in Morlum, the Thai folk song genre, and Koba liked the idea.
    They got a Thai producer named Thitiwat Rongthong to help with the traditional instruments.
    Generally speaking, I think 'Karate' is a better introductory song for BABYMETAL, although 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (from Sonisphere UK 2014) that someone else mentioned is also a great suggestion.

      Do you think people in general from within the industry would do better with certain BM songs to start with? We've seen the usually Gimme Chocolate WTF videos, or BxMxC, or Road of Resistance, or Headbanger first timers, even BM Death. You mentioned Karate or IDZ at Sonisphere. Are there others? Nice reaction brother 🤘🦊🤘.I like when people understand music and production.Most musicians and astute music fans understand genres/styles can be mixed to create something new. It's been happening a long time. Personally I think in the western world 'highly produced' is now kind of a bad word... people think corporate/ fake/sellout and so on. It's not like that for most Japanese, doing the best you can and working together is not widely considered to be a negative.

    • @oldguyreactions
      @oldguyreactions  2 года назад +2

      Well he did say "highly produced" is not a bad thing. It could be bad or could be good. So he did not say it was bad. I asked him what he meant by that and I think he meant that it took a ton of people to produce what we saw. It wasn't garage bandy.

      @Codametal 2 года назад +2

      @@oldguyreactions It may not have been started in a garage (In Japan, residences RARELY had any garages as not everyone owned a vehicle), but Babymetal started with zero budget. They had to hire actors to play instruments and borrow clothes for the first year or two until they brought in a bigger audience. They did play foodhalls, malls, even on the streets before they got to where they are. Watching Pa-Pa-Ya is the culmination of over 7 years of work, and two studio albums.
      Please forgive us for jumping the gun on criticizing too harshly on your guest. We've seen it many times when a new reacter sees a BM video and immediately passes judgement on 'what type of band' it is. We understand he is speaking from what he knows, and that's what he immediately sees. We've always respected that in a reacter because BM isn't for everyone. But his tone of immediately dismissing the band as a 'produced' band gives it a negative connotation when he doesn't actually know anything about the band. An immediate harsh critic will immediately get harsh criticism in return. You can tell by some of the responses that sometimes the One can be a bit protective of the girls as some of us have been following the girls ever since they were teenagers, some even as far back as since they were kids.
      I sincerely hope your guest follows the simple rule of thumb to listen to 3 songs of any band before passing final judgement. He should give some of their other songs a try. Like he said, not all produced bands are bad. Just because it is a produced band, doesn't mean the members worked any less than those who came out of garage. And if he knew how far the band has come since the beginning, fighting through a vast amount of adversity, the band is strong and now a driving force in the world today as the founder of kawaii metal. One piece of trivia, there are certain songs that only Su-metal sings solo, and some only Moametal and Yuimetal sings (Black Babymetal), and while one or the other is singing their setlist, the other is backstage doing homework. As they learned in their previous idol group Sakura Gakuin to adapt their focus immediately to do something else. The talent of Su-metal, the band, the production, the personalities of the girls and the bandmembers, the appreciation for each member of their audience, and the choreography, crowd control and participation, and all the practice so these three little girls can do what they love to do. And they absolutely love to perform for their fans. They always have, and they always will. They even had a song written in English specifically to thank the fans who has given them support, love and learned japanese just so they can sing with the girls. You probably won't find any other group like them anywhere, where everything you see on the stage and venue, it's all done for the fans. And Pa-Pa-Ya is only one song. That energy lasts for the entire concert. Not many performers can last that long.
      So I hope you bring him back, if he wishes to. It is still very interesting to hear different POV on BM. We are all fans, but are open to help people understand the girls, and gain a unique insight from people. I mean, there are billions of people in the world, right? Take care.

    I'm down to Road of Resistance or Headbanger LIVE next, Babymetal is crazily good for their live performance that as you see right there they can just take their live shots and made official music video. But this one is not Live audio so you havent heard Su vocal without all those effects, she's so clean to sing and dance like that whole concert

  • @road-runner
    @road-runner 2 года назад +20

    So basically:
    - He didn't liked it
    - He compared the girls to the Spice Girls. Okay, I will take this as an offense.
    - He said it's "heavily produced" i.e. manufactured by a company... you know, the classic speech.
    - He said he wouldn't add it to his playlist or go to their concerts. That's okay.
    Probably not the best song to get introduced to BABYMETAL, and the studio audio doesn't help either.
    You should try something more simple like "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" live at the Sonisphere 2014. No over-production, just the Kami Band and the girls. Clean, powerful, metal.

    • @Codametal
      @Codametal 2 года назад +11

      Yeah, even though I was an early fan of the Spice Girls, comparing them to BM is just...wrong. NONE of the Spice Girls can sing or have the background as Su-metal (or ever will). Spice Girls represented girl power. No one has more presence than Su-metal performing on stage. It is often said, Suzuka Nakamota may be 5'2". But Su-metal is 10' tall. Someone hard to ignore.
      I think he got a preconceived notion when he immediately pigeon-holed them as a 'manufactured' ban. Yeah, he sounds like 'one of those'. But who knows, manufactured or not, if the music itself because ever song is different. He'll eventually find a song that may interest him once he gets passed what he thinks he knows about the band.
      Maybe it's a marketing strategy on Amuse's plan to hit every single genre in existence, but what better way to expand your portfolio than to actually make those songs sound good regardless of genre? No other band can hit a wider market of genres as BM, they've got something for everyone. Kind of like...Amazon. 8-)

      Guys, guys...we are old guys. Don't think of us as knowing anything in todays music. We are clueless. The guest is a retired professional musician and has worked with sound. But he is old school. He said it was heavily produced. As in, not garage band type of material put together by the 3 singers. The spice girls was a reference to having 3 girl pop singers singing. Not a comparison to sound or singing voices. It takes a large amount of people to put on the type of video we saw in his opinion. He is from old school music...70's. So this is very different for what he is used to. That is what is interesting with "old guy reactions". We have no clue. don't be offended by us discussing it. We thought it was awesome.

      @@oldguyreactions I'm probably older than you, so... And as much I remember I believe the Spice Girls were 5. 🤣
      I was just summarizing the facts I saw. Sometimes, the production distracts from the actual performance and I believe that sometimes, less is better to better appreciate their performances.
      We don't hide that they started inside a company (actually a talent agency) BUT it was the (crazy) idea of one man, one of their producers. Apparently, no one believed in this idea so they didn't get any extra budget to start with. So they only had their enthusiasm and the opportunity. Su-metal was chosen specifically as a main vocalist because of her strong vocals despite her young age. And Yui and Moa were chosen on purpose due their similar appearance and their compatible voices with Su.
      There is footage from their very first live performance in 2010 and what you see here (2019) is not even comparable. They earned every single piece of everything they add in between.

    As to your comment about them being possibly a “corporate” or manufactured band….uh no. They actually started with no money. The band was created around the talent of lead vocalist Suzuka Nakamoto. A music producer saw her perform at age 10 and was so impressed by her vocal ability and stage presence at such a young age he realized that she could make his vision a reality. Koba Kobayashi (the music producer) was a heavy metal fan who wanted to inject life into what he considered to be a stale and aging genre. He believed that Suzuka’s vocals and stage presence were such that she could front a metal band so he took her and Suzuka’s two classmates at Sakura Gakuin Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno and fused pop, choreography and metal together.
    Because it was a passion project with no funding they played strip malls and small venues (they did not have enough money to hire a real band so they had friends dressed up as skeletons pretending to play music to a pre-recorded backtrack). The girls even had to borrow clothes from friends for the shows.
    Their popularity grew and by 2012 (they started in 2010 when Suzuka was 11 years of age and Moa and Yui were only 10) things began to happen. The girls paid their dues. They and Koba were under contract with the largest talent agency Amuse and once the agency saw the potential they gave Koba the go ahead to hire the most talented session musicians that Japan had to offer and they became the backing tour band (called The Kami Band) for BabyMetal.
    BabyMetal is respected by and have either performed or collaborated with legends of Metal such as Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, Korn, Guns and Roses, Rob Zombie, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and more.
    They have over 50 LIVE song/performances and every one is different. They are fearless exploring other music genres.
    If you choose to react to more I recommend
    Road of Resistance Live in Japan or Headbanger LIVE as your next reaction.
    A word of advice: Stay away from LIVE performances at Glastonbury as the BBC did a disastrous job with sound production (mics not turned on and poor quality sound)
    Good luck.

      Thank you for that information. Super cool. I believe the guest was referring to the production being a large production that had the large corporate feel. There are some bands that are raw in their performances. Just getting up on stage and grinding it out. This video felt like every second was planned out.

      Producer is Kei (or Key) Kobayashi as written in romaji, with family name (surname) first.
      At the start, October 2010, Su- was age 12 (two months from 13) and Yui and Moa were 11.
      Not classmates, fellow members. Sakura Gakuin was not a school but an Idol Group created by Amuse for developing talent.

      @@oldguyreactions you are right about everything being planned out to the letter. I understand that some world not like that. I wouldn't like it in nearly any other case but Babymetal is a theatrical performance with choreographed dancing. There has to be some level of organization in what they do. I saw Rammstein a couple weeks ago and noticed they are the same way. They have the exact same movements, mannerisms and facial expressions in each concert. Who cares?! It's musical theater.
