    It's quite disappointing to hear The Athletic (& Jon MacKenzie) parrot Man City's disingenuous "it's not the money, it's the talent/quality" line. No one disputes how brilliant Pep or these players are or thinks they're not hard-working, gifted people. The point is they were able to recruit best-in-class across the board (squad, technical and management team) by breaching FFP & spending obscene amounts of money.

      It's also hilarious how so many people really believe City players are earning only as much as they reveal to the public. Like yeah they have no history or culture, play in a city that has historically been a deterrent to sign players but they also somehow manage to recruit the best players in the world to play for them at similar salaries to every other CL club and lower salaries on average than RM and Barca and also prevent their players from being poached by them 😂 yeah sure

    I have nothing but respect and admiration for Pep Guardiola as a manager and for the team that he has put together; I'm just sick and tired of their dominance and I find them boring, robotic, lethargic, uninspiring and unexciting. There's nothing natural or organic about them, and it's virtually impossible to compete with them when they can decide to bench, or even get rid of a £50M player (and that's being conservative) if they decide they're not for them. Very few, if any, other clubs have that luxury. For Arsenal to have taken this year's title race to the final day is an unbelievable achievement, and anyone who sees us not winning the title as a "failure" or a "bottle job" is either brainwashed by the shit stirring, attention seeking, agenda based pundits out there, or just click baiting for their channel.
    The 115 charges looming over them, however, massively taint how I feel about them as a club. I have to be honest about that. As of the time of this post, there have been no official convictions, but there's no smoke without fire. You can pull 1 or 2 charges out of thin air and just make those up, but not 115.

      In a less conservative sport than association football it might be easier to do, but let's suppose it's possible: what rule changes would you implement to change the 'winning formula' for football? I mean, Manchester City (and other clubs) won't play a different style if it doesn't work, but if the rules change that might encourage a different manner of play.

    • @David-qj2iu

      City play plenty of exciting innovative football, I would suggest alot more than Arsenal and against many sides who PTB (like Arsenal at The Etihad- was that the best AFC could do?). It's just easy for people to gloss over this or pretend otherwise. Regarding the 115 'charges' do some research and you will see they are contrived and brought under an unaccountable and regularly changing set of internal rules. It's not based on real law which tends to develop whereas this is bureaucrats adapting on the hop. Do you actually trust the framework of 'law' meddling with Everton, Forest or City?

    Klopp's having won one title would be a ding against him if Liverpool had won literally any other EPL titles... but they haven't. Hell, you could argue that aside from 13/14, before Klopp arrived Liverpool were an upper midtable side and had been for a long time (aside from 13/14).
    In the seven years before Klopp's first full season, Liverpool finished outside of the UCL spots 6 times. The one exception was 13/14. They missed Europe altogether 3 out of 7 campaigns. For comparison, Arsenal went also 6 seasons without the UCL (consecutively in their case) but two of those campaigns were full campaigns under Arteta. Klopp got Liverpool from 8th in his partial season to fourth in his first full campaign.
    That being said, I do think Klopp's reputation is a little exaggerated. The reality is that in the Klopp era, Liverpool only have 3 top 2 finishes (out of 7 full campaigns). The idea of Klopp and Guardiola as two titans struggling for the title with everyone else looking on is a myth that serves to elevate Klopp's reputation somewhat. For comparison, City have, during Klopp's reign, 6 out of 7 possible top two finishes. The problem isn't necessarily the conclusion (Klopp is overrated), the problem is the argument used to justify it (he has only one title) just totally ignores the context of where Liverpool were when Klopp came in.

    • @shishsuke
      @shishsuke 24 дня назад +1

      Fully agree with this take. Quite balanced and addresses both sides of the argument really well.

    • @shishsuke
      @shishsuke 24 дня назад

      I also believe Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the perfect time. It was quite clear at the beginning of his tenure that the recruitment at the club was predominantly directed by the recruitment team without the manager having a lot of input himself (their most successful era) with them slowly transitioning into a setup where Klopp had more of a say in the signings and there were a lot more misses than before. Now they've got Edwards back in the recruitment side of things and will probably go back to more of a head coach model which probably will facilitate the transition quite well

    When it comes to VAR, most of the arguments I've heard are actually saying we should change the rules, rather than against VAR itself. If a tiny offside upsets you, that means you disagree with the offside rule, not with the VAR. Of course the arguments regarding confusion about decisions, on-pitch vs VAR authority, and overturning decisions are valid and separate from that.

    calling Klopp overrated is fairly myopic, considering football’s cultural relevance and contributions. maybe his results may make his importance seem inflated, but its pretty obvious that folks of all different club allegiances candidly speak about the Klopp’s era as a net-positive for the spirit of the sport. to garner the respect of swathes of different fans is impressive, especially in such a competitive league. And no doubt Klopp earned the respect too, just by showing up with a fighting spirit every week.

    Here's a controversial shout. I think Manchester United are this seasons biggest OVERachievers. I think 8th and an FA Cup final is extremely flattering for them. They were very lucky to get by Coventry in the semi-final and in the league they have been outplayed in the majority of their games and didn't deserve anything but came away with a point or 3 e.g Wolves (H), Bournemouth (A), Everton (H), Forest (H), Sheffield (A). They have just been very fortunate with decisions, opposition blunders and moments of individual quality. The table in order of expected points has them around 13th.

    • @mauddib1761
      @mauddib1761 24 дня назад +1

      But if you consider the amount they spend on wages (which I think there have been quite a few models that show that typically the wages correlate to league position) and the fact they finished 3rd and reached two cup finals last season they've underachieved. They've been one of the most fortunate teams though like you say.
      In terms of under or over achieving it's a bit weird how expectations change throughout the season like Spurs fans are unhappy because of the end of the season but 5th at the start would have been seen as good and a team like Wolves were 4th favourites for relegation at the start of the season so they've massively overachieved compared to pre-season predictions

    • @JFriisN
      @JFriisN 24 дня назад

      @@mauddib1761Just to clear it up:
      You are talking about two different kinds of 'overachieving'. The comment above is about the correlation between performances and results. Which is why United is brought up as they've overperformed their expected points.
      Whereas you're talking about the expectations of the team, based on things like history, wages etc. Where a team like Aston Villa will have overachieved this season.

    train the referees to be better is such a simplistic solution to VAR - the inescapable facts are that refereeing is subjective & organic, and that referee's will make mistakes, even if they can look at incidents at any speed from any angle for any amount of time. No matter how much technology we have, referee's will still make mistakes and will still go against what fans & pundits think because so many decisions are 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 whatever. As fans we have to accept that nothing in life can be 100% fair. SO, we need referees to make LESS decisions in a game, not more. VAR massively increases the amount of decisions that referees make in a game, therefore there will be more controversy & more mistakes. less decisions = less mistakes.

Daniel Levy prefers the sorts of players that don’t have a face on EA Sports FC 24 and they’d be happy with a move to any prem club

      The idea that you should only qualify for the CL if you're capable of winning it is so early 1990s, the CL is a different level financially than the Europa and helps so much in attracting top talent to your club that will help you achieve the next level. And even if you do win europa, you qualify for the CL next season as a prize. Are you going to refuse to participate in that case? Very strange logic

      Such a poor perspective. You stand no chance of winning the PL, so should you get yourselves relegated to win the Championship? It's such a low ambition, loser mentality that I don't want you to ever change 😂

    IF Arsenal win on Saturday, then Declan Rice is a reasonable shout for the Best Signing award; but if they don't, then all he has done (as well as Raya, Timber and Havertz, for the combined sum of £200m) is got Arsenal 3 points closer to City than last year - and 5 points better overall compared to 2022/23. I don't see how that can be counted as a blinding success.
    In comparison, you have to wonder what trouble Chelsea might have been in, were it not for Cole Palmer's signing; although I dislike the guy intensely, he's single-handedly dragged Chelsea towards Europa League qualification and prevented a pretty crap season from being a total disaster... and all for £40m. I'd also argue that no player has been as consistent as him over the ENTIRE season, whereas others have had spells where they were off-form or ineffective at crucial moments.

      It's always more of a challenge to compare players in different positions, i.e. Rice's contributions are less tangible than Palmer's. But I agree, if Arsenal win it, Rice has to get that label - yes he cost a pretty penny, but he's shown immense value and may turn out to be the difference maker.
      On 'face' value however, Palmer for £40m is just unbelievable - the quality of the foals, the importance of them, especially given his age in a team full of individuals who have cost 2 or even 3 times as much is remarkable.
