The slot in the shaft and in the hub of the wheel are "key ways" the thing that fits in them is called a key. (a square key) Ron W4BIN

Was wondering how I can determine if I need new motors or just brushes?

I have a remedy for that just hold the motor upside down so the the pin with the hole will stay hanging down then put the freewheel lever on

you should just connect the new motors to the chair at first before all this hard work to be sure 100% the old one is the problem.

IMHO he should have checked the old motors after they're disconnected from the power module by applying 24V DC. If they don't spin with 24V DC power applied check for bad motor brushes, bad commutator, bad bearings or bad gears. Easy fixes except for the gears, or just buy a pair of good used motors & gearbox's on Ebay for approx $150.00 to help save the customer money. I'm pretty sure the customer would rather pay a few hundred bucks VS paying for new motor gearbox's at the retail price as of OCT 30th, 2021 for $545.80 each X two + taxes and his labor rate per hour. My apologies to him if he did and the customer wanted new motor gearbox's anyway.
