- A historical cemetery in Long Beach, California, was vandalized, and repairs will cost taxpayers thousands. The Sunnyside Cemetery is the final resting place of many notable Californians, including more than 220 Civil War veterans and Japanese-American families who endured the travesty of WWII internment camps. The groundskeeper says at least 12 headstones were damaged overnight. The Historical Society of Long Beach calls the deliberate defacing of cemeteries “a disturbing trend.”
Imagine walking up to your family members grave only to see their headstone looking like that. Absolutely disgusting. Thats terrible
Sometimes it's not even caused by people. The graves will get weathered away or fall over on their own. This is especially true with older ceneteries with little funding for maintenance. I live by a cemetery from the 1800s and I can't say just how many innumerable graves have fallen over or eroded.
@@wonderfulhousebrusselsAmbiorix Given the size of cemeteries and the camera quality needed for a place with little lighting at night, it would probably cost just as much. You would also have to hired someone to watch the cameras.

Another problem involving cemetery vandalism: You often see those metal flag holder markers on veterans graves marking what war they served in. Thieves steal these markers and sell them for scrap metal. My great-granduncle was KIA in Italy in 1944 and his marker was stolen from the family headstone. This is unfortunately somewhat common and the reason why not all scrappers will accept military markers.

People work hard ALL their lives only to have their burial place disturbed like this…..IT ISN’T fair to them. They were granted final rest by the Creator….and that rest should be peaceful and undisturbed. My heart hurts for the loved ones of those interred in the cemetery. I know I wouldn’t wanna go to visit my loved one’s site and find it torn up like that. Just seeing a site like that can be VERY distressing for the family. 😭💔😖

I just live not that far from this historic cemetery and is a educational place to learn about the history of my hometown. Recently I visited back in April 2022 and just upset on how vandals could get away with it.

I just visited Gettysburg not too long ago and just being there was extremely emotionality overwhelming. To hear that this has happened is absolutely disheartening. No Civil War cemetery, or any cemetery, should ever be vandalized. This is another reason why I hate California.

The taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for the rebuilding of graveyards. I hope the Vandal gets caught, arrested, and forced to pay damages to the families that were affected by the Vandal’s actions and the repairs of the tombstones.
