  • Baby Boomers Tribute "Let Me Live Again" Pacific Ocean Park 1958 - 1967 Santa Monica
"POP" as it was soon nicknamed and pronounced, "pee-oh-pee" was a joint venture between CBS and Santa Anita Park. It opened on Saturday, July 28, 1958 with an attendance of 20,000. The next day, the park drew 37,262 which outperformed Disneyland's attendance figure that day. Admission was ninety cents for adults which included access to the park and certain exhibits. The term "POP" was also used as a clever acronym for "Pay One Price", though other rides and attractions were on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Like Disneyland, Pacific Ocean Park found corporate sponsors to share the expense of some exhibits. Six of the pier's original attractions were incorporated into the new park: The Sea Serpent roller coaster, the antique Looff carousel, the Toonerville Fun House, the Glass House, twin diving bells and more.

Visited there in 1966 and 1967. The rollercoaster was awesome! I remember the bubble ride over the ocean, mirror maze, carousel and the bathysphere. An episode of Get Smart was filmed there as well as the finale of The Fugitive. Happy memories.

Made many beautiful memories there with friends as a teen in the mid sixties. Went into the army in 1967 (the summer of love), came back in 1970 on a sentimental journey to see my old dear friend only to find her and a special part of my youth burned down in a heap behind a chain link fence. Thanks for the touching tribute.

POP made me forget about Disneyland when I was a kid. My parents first took my brother and me to POP in 1965. It cost $2.00 to get in and you could ride all rides except the Huge Orange rollercoaster as many times as you wanted. The rollercoaster was 25 cents. We'd stand in line for a half hour then do it again. POP will always remain my favorite amusement park. Great Times!

I doubt if anyone else could have this memory of P.O.P.: I was about 6 years old living in Sylmar and all summer I was looking forward to the Grand Opening of The Sylmar Swimming Pool just a couple blocks away. That was all I could think of....being there on Opening Day. And so the day finally arrived and I was so excited to go swim at that huge public swimming pool. I think it was sometime in August about 1960. My parents called to me that morning and said that my best friend's mom came across the street and invited to take me along with her family to .... you'll never guess....Pacific Ocean Park. "WHAT? NO FRIGGEN' WAY!!!, I'M GOING TO THE GRAND OPENING OF THE SYLMAR SWIMMING POOL. I DON'T WANT TO GO, I'M NOT INTERESTED". I'M NOT GOING!!!". My dad pulled me aside while I cried and pouted and said that I could go the pool tomorrow but this was a great time I could have today and that....I WAS GOING WHETHER I LIKE IT OR NOT!
You think I enjoyed P.O.P.? Maybe a little but all day I was thinking about the pool. So that's the memory I had of P.O.P. watching this. Amazing how stubborn I was. Great video, and I'm really enjoying the Baby Boomers tributes. Thank you so much. Thought I saw my Chevy Van there on Van Nuys Blvd. in the summer of 1972. My friends and I cruised there most Friday or Saturday nights. What a happening place to simply be a part of.

It cost an extra quarter to ride the roller coaster so we'd get our dollars together and ride it 4 times in a row. Favorite ride. Sang there in concerts a few times tool Loved POP, though I'm surprised we survived the drives back and forth through the canyon - doubt any of us were ever licensed!

Thanks for the memories, a great video. This was my first amusement park. My grandmother used to take my brother and I there three or four times each summer during the late 50s and early 60s. The rollercoaster was our favorite even though it said, "Condemned ride at your own risk."

Back around 1959, some friends and I were the first in the park before the crowds gathered. You could buy a ribbon bracelet on certain days, that would allow you access to all the rides, all day, as many times as you wanted. I can still hear the poor guy operating the old wooden roller coaster. I swear, we rode that thing 26 times straight without a break. After about 20 times, the guy said, why don't you kids give it a break, and allow someone else to ride. We informed him, what other people, since no one else was waiting to ride the coaster in the first place. We had him over a barrel. He grinned and? but probably a lot of groveling with quiet threats. We survived, he survived, and if he's still around, i'm sure he used that day in his story telling about the park.

I would take the bus down Wilshire from Burnside...for 25 cents and spend the day at POP and get scared on that diving bell.....it PLUNGED UP HARD AND FAST. The fire was tragic. P.O.P. deserved better than that. But loved to watch the surfers do the pilings in the mid 70's before they cleared it all away If it is any consolation, Santa Monica land got so expensive it would have been gone by now anyway.

Several TV shows were film there including Route 66, Season 2 episode 28 “Between hello and goodbye”. Starred my favorite Actress Susan Oliver, trying to commit suicide by jumping from one of the gondolas into the sea. Also the last episode of the Fugitive when Kimble chased the one arm man up the tower, the ride was called the Flying Dolphin (Mahi Mahi). It was a shame how the park ended, wish I had been in CA back then and visited at least once.

    Does anyone remember the
Neptune exhibit? A guy in costume under water in a large tank. Also the entrance off Ocean Ave. with the arched buildings still remain today. There were character artists with their easels to paint your portraits. Probably for one dollars. The 60's were great to be a kid......

Do you know which cross street off Ocean Ave? I MIGHT know where you're talking about, but wanted to be sure.
Edit: Found it. And actually, that's off Pacific and Windward Avenues. On one of those arched buildings there is even a HUGE mural on the side of it that depicts that street in its hayday and you can see the POP pier off in the distance including the Ocean Skyline ride! Wow! I've lived in Los Angeles my whole life, and have gone to Venice Beach NUMEROUS times in a span of 35 years and NEVER noticed that! Wow! The mural is called "Touch of Venice" and can be seen on the side of "The People's Drug Company" on Windward ave! Thanks for sharing!
