    European airlines, and Travelport, a UK-based GDS formed through a merger of smaller providers. Besides air travel, GDSS now support
    hotel room distribution, train travel, cruises, car rentals, and even airport transfers. GDSS are normally connected directly to the heart of airline sales technologies -central reservation systems or CRSS. A CRS is a software program that manages seat reservations on the airline side once a GDS requests a seat. But this connection channel doesn't cover scheduling information and pricing. To set time tables and prices Airlines must connect with two additional third parties. Airlines publish their prices on so called ATPCO or airline tariff publishing company. It's the main global source of fare information that further distributes prices across GDSS online travel agencies or OTAS and price aggregators like Skyscanner. On top of that, airlines connect to scheduling providers such as a Innovata and OAG. These technology companies supply the travel market with flight schedule, routing connection, and flight code info. Powerful middlemen, GDSS have become close to a monopoly on the air travel distribution market.
    For many years they've been the main point of contact for both airlines and agents, including online travel agencies. Most travelers today research prices at OTAS and about a third of travelers worldwide purchase tickets there.

    Hi, is there any GDS for cargo shipping industry (maritime, trucking,...)? Many thanks!

    • @AltexSoft
      @AltexSoft  Год назад +1

      Hi there!
      Probably the closest analogue to GDSs in the trucking industry are the load boards (e.g., DAT or Truckstop). They collect information about loads, prices, and available trucks, connect brokers to carriers, and provide valuable industry data. As for ocean shipping, such freight marketplaces also exist (e.g., Freightos or SeaRates), but working with a trusted, full-service freight forwarder is still more common.

    what is the difference between military GDS and the Civil one?

    • @AltexSoft
      @AltexSoft  3 года назад +1

      In this video, we mention global distribution systems abbreviated as GDS, the concept used in civil aviation to name the systems that aggregate flight booking data. It doesn't seem like military global distribution systems exist. Perhaps, you're looking for some other concept abbreviated as GDS.

    Great video! Btw, is it possible to start a hotel booking site by using a GDS? So there is a not need of onboarding hotels indipendantly to my site? How an OTA can make money if it uses a GDS?

    • @AltexSoft
      @AltexSoft  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you can start a hotel booking website with GDS inventory only, but it's far from ideal. While GDSs have large inventories, you may want to add descriptions, images, and other content. GDSs may have problems with that when it comes to hotels. Normally, online travel agencies source hospitality inventory from multiple suppliers (e.g. GDSs, bed banks, larger OTAs, etc.), and depending on a specific accommodation request, pick a supplier that would provide better margins.
      You don't need to onboard each hotel, but you may want to have direct agreements with target hotels in your strategic destinations to get better margins and/or offer better pricing to your customers. Targeting the entire world with a generic hotel inventory sourced from GDSs isn't the best idea since you must outcompete Booking.com, Expedia, and other key players.
      This leads to the second question. How do you make money? You can add markups and commissions over the net rate that you get from a supplier. Or you can upsell other products, add hotels to tour packages, and add markups and fees to them. GDSs themselves can reward you with incentives depending on the number of sales you make.
