I'm definitely not able to differentiate Western gulls outside of adult plumage. Will triple check, but it looks like you are right and have earned us an extra bird we didn't know we had seen. Could definitely come in handy as things are winding down a little now we are back in the east, so thanks for the shout!

I have a question to ask: I think you are using a Nikon Z series camera (?Z6), FTZ adapter and a Nikon 200-500, how do you find this combination? I currently use a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 100-400 and Tamron 150-600 G1 and would like to upgrade. I am considering adding the 200-500 first then upgrade to a Nikon mirrorless. Thanks.
Hi Keith, thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely trying to feel more comfortable staring into a lens! Good eye on the camera, it is a Z6ii. I was advised that this would be better for video than the Z7 that I was also considering (cropped to 4K on Z6ii vs downscaling on the Z7). The Z9 is out of my budget, and the Z8 wasn't released yet (darn!). You're also correct on the lens and adapter combo. I used to use a D7200 and the lens still works fine with the adaptor/mirrorless. Shooting video with a DSLR was frustrating, which is mainly why I upgraded. I can't give you comparisons on other telephoto lenses because I haven't owned any others. F5.6 makes it a little slow at times. The improvement in my photos (sharpness, speed) was better than I anticipated when I switched to the Z6 (full-frame camera vs cropped 7200). The focusing on the 200-500 can be a bit frustrating sometimes, but obviously birding is probably the most challenging usage. I find my photos/video is at its sharpest when the subject is 50-100 feet away, and it can degrade quite fast beyond that. It is fairly sharp through the full focal length, only dropping off slightly at the full 500. To be honest with you, beyond using it for these videos, I have started to use it less for taking "arty" type photos and more often use it for record keeping (proof I saw X bird) and identification purposes.

I think it will be pretty close with things inevitably slowing down now that spring is over. Hopefully not too much of a scramble come late fall!

Yeah, the Cali Surfer dudes in the background were pretty funny. The snake was massive, to be fair. But it's a harmless (to humans) species.
