Hi Tonia. As a Canadian migrant in Australia, it is more challenging coming to live in a foreign country as a family. Even if the locals speak English. But as in all of life's challenges, it's how you face up to them and deal with them. If you have what you want where you are, stay put. But do come and visit the land down under.

I've only discovered this lovely young lass very recently. She seems very grounded & down to earth & good on her for wanting to explore & experience the world. As you said no place is "perfect" but Australia is still a pretty damn fine country to live in. As someone else has commented visiting for a holiday is quite different to making the HUGE leap to "up stumps" & move permanently. This lass seems switched on enough to realise this & good on her for at least wanting to try. Australia is such a vast country there is something here for every one, just depends what you're looking for. I live in relatively remote rural Qld & even out here we hear the occasional American accent from Americans who've made the long trip to move here permanently & i say good on 'em. All the best mate

It's hard to compare visiting somewhere on a tourist visa and actually having to make a life somewhere. I'm an Aussie and I did a big trip to the US for some conferences, courses and to visit relatives, and moving around the US, meeting like-minded people at conferences, courses and in hostels and backpacker places sounded exactly like her experience of Australia. My lifestyle in the US was exciting, fun and fulfilling for months and everyone I met was fantastic and from all over the world.
However, when I'm back here in Oz, working, cleaning the house, maintaining the yard, repairing stuff, looking after relatives, looking after my own physical and mental health (unsuccessfully), paying taxes, a mortgage, power bills, water bills, phone and internet, petrol, getting a car serviced and repaired, trying to fit in doing some exercise (soon, OK, soon), keeping contact with friends (sometimes), trying to upskill, do courses, network, etc., etc., etc. - everything you have to do sustain yourself and your career long term, it can be a grind, the same as it is anywhere.
I don't have a partner (currently), any kids, pets, streaming services, etc. to worry about, but friends of mine do and that limits their opportunities (not so much the streaming services). I've always had a better than average salary, so others are doing it a lot tougher than me, but I've also had to move to different states four times to get work in my field, so that means house-hunting, buying and selling, packing and unpacking - it's not all a bed of roses. I don't know anyone with a grown-up job who can take a couple of months off to contemplate their navel and then waltz back into another similar-paying job. I took time out to look after my Dad with dementia and was on a Carer's pension for a while. It took me a year to get back into my field after that. No employer is going to look at your CV and not ask about those time gaps.

For what it may be worth, I am a light aircraft pilot and have been for many years, and I live in Canberra. If you fly from Canberra to an area between, say Jindabyne and Bermagui, in winter, you can see to the west people skiing in the Snowy Mountains and to the east people at the beaches around the South Coast. You are wise to watch these videos with a grain of salt and indeed Australia is not perfect. However, we do have a remarkably high quality of life.

Evan, by coincidence I was born and raised in Moruya on the South Coast, which as you’d well know has an airport and is the stop before Bermagui airport. I’ve commented on various sites that after living in Asia and Europe, the flight from Sydney to Moruya and Bermagui is the most picturesque I’ve ever been on. It follows the coastline all the way down. It’s only a small plane and you can see so much more than you do on a Boeing 747!

@ToniaElkins I'm absolutely certain life in the USA will change a lot in the next 4 years for many.
I'm intersex, and I have intersex friends in the US who have already had their lives changed dramatically in just a few days, losing jobs, passports, rights to use public restrooms. Those on the right didn't believe the POTUS could actually do the things he said he would.

My husband & I are Australians living on a middle income. We have been able to do several European & US holidays. Due to the distance we need to travel overseas, we take 6 to 8 weeks to do our trips. We usually buy a motorcycle or hire a car so we can travel the back roads & get off the beaten track & experience the real culture of the country we are visiting. We do check out the tourist attractions but they are not our main focus. We have met so many friendly & welcoming people on our trips. On our first European holday we called in to thank the French family that care for the grave of my uncle who was shot down over their villiage during WW2. They insisted we stay with them for a week while they took time off work to show us all the sights in their locality. Thirty years later we still communicate with them & have had them visit us when we were able to reciprocate their hospitality. The only negative issues we have had were in the US where we were told Australia was not a free country because our government had banned guns despite the fact my husband & several of his friends owns firearms. We were also told Australia was a communist country because we had a free universal health care system. These negative issues were isolated & the majority of US citizens we met were lovely & interested in knowing more about Australia.

73 years an Australian. Everything she says is true. However, it's not quite as true if you are working full time. Yes we are still more laid back, still have a better work life balance and still have good pay and conditions, including a lot of leave, but it's not quite the same if you are working 40 or more hours per week or have a family and home to care for.
She is right though about some of the expenses. Education and medical expenses are far lower in Australia, and the quality is generally world class.

Worldwide Inflation is impacting on everyone here in Australia too. The difference is the majority of Australians are not living on the edge of a financial precipice - we have (mostly) savings, we have free healthcare, we have unemployment benefits for those who need it, we have government pensions for the elderly who need it, we have our superannuation waiting for us when we retire. We feel supported by our social system and so we can relax and enjoy life more. Life is Ike this in many other countries around the world too - but e also have better weather than most 😀.

Marissa was living in New York so her cost of living was much higher than her native Ohio.
She was exaggerating with going to the beach year round in Australia places like Melbourne and Adelaide have winter daily max temperatures in the 57 Fahrenheit range, Sydney and Perth in the 65 range not really beach weather.
The standard in Australia is 4 weeks vacation plus public holidays which vary depending on the state but average 10 per year. Shift workers that work over a 24/7 roster get 5 weeks vacation.
If you have pets moving to Australia is expensive, quarantine and government charges combined are about AUD $3800 per animal and then there are transport costs.

'Work - Life -Balance' is really a thing!
It seems to me, as an Australian, that from all the American videos I've watched and my interactions with visiting Americans, that that 'balance' just doesn't exist in the US. It appears that you have very restrictive work practices .. little worker protections and many seem to need to work multiple jobs just to get by ... so no time left to be 'enjoying' life. Sounds a bit odd considering many Americans state that the US is the .. 'land of the free'!!
The whole 'lack of worker protections' thing appears to be nothing more than a system the wealthy elite have put in place over many years to ensure they have an obedient and compliant workforce. The end result for workers is a feeling of being highly strung out and living in feer of losing employment ... income .. health insurance .. and everything else that flows on from that. Not a good position for anyone to be in.

@ToniaElkins to a degree, competition for jobs happens in Australia too, but it would be ramped up to 11 in the US, for the simple fact of having 330 odd million of your closest mates competing for that one position but here we only have 26 million mates. Oh hold on, I'll delete that, makes us sound like loners over here. Lol. I'm not into competing for jobs either. I really enjoy what I do for work and have issues with the company that I work for, as do we all, but I stay loyal to them because it's better the devil you know. Although, I've chosen a relatively easy industry to move from company to company with experience, I could get a job anywhere in Australia and probably internationally too, and it's even an industry that allows you to keep on working past retirement age and even hire people 70+ without an issue so long as you're fit and able enough to do the work. That cannot be said by other industries here or abroad.
