2:55 Yes it is. The other thing is that 10 out the 18 professional teams come from one state: Victoria. There are suburbs of Melbourne whose teams fill 80 000 seater stadiums every week.
Random facts - Aussie Rules was the first version of football to be played under fully codified rules anywhere in the world ( 1859 ). Yes, it was codified before both Soccer and Rugby . Inspiration for the rules came from many different backgrounds .One of them was the Indigenous game called Marngrook . Its believed that the highflying marking efforts seen in our great game come from Marngrook . Marngrook could possibly be 10s of thousands of years old as it was played by the Indigenous population , the oldest continuous culture on Earth 60 000+ years .
The idea that racist white people adopted an indigenous sport is modern fiction. The AFL have officially adopted this fiction which along with modern 'traditions' of the Welcome to Country, and Smoking Ceremonies establishes a woke fantasy re-telling It is so similar to Gaelic Football that it is obviously derived from that. Marngrook simply involved kicking an object high into the air.
@Macman-v8m Rugby's codification in 1845 is pretty well documented too. I can only imagine you're using some strange definition of the term "fully" codified, as though Australian football has never changed since 1859.
The game is called footy for very good reasons as follows. The rules are designed to use your foot to kick the ball. You want to run? Ok, but bouncing the ball is going to slow you down one way or the other, even if only marginally. You want to grab the ball and pass it using your hands? OK, but you hit it, tap it, absolutely no throwing. That only goes so far. You want to hunker down over the ball to deny access to the other team? OK, but as soon as the other team touches you and you don't legally dispose of it eg handball or kick it there and then, your team is at risk of losing possession. Straight away. Kicking the ball is the clear winner. It means big meters in distance. It means rapid, continous play that often looks chaotic until the superior footballer outhinks and outplays his or her opponent. Its fast paced and often very exciting. Its one of the first codified sports in the world, and they've kept the elements ensuring a free flowing game from the beginning. That's the essence of the game in my opinion. It emphasises speed and kicking which is why a major score, the goal, is scored only via a player's foot. Enjoy.
I'm personally a Rugby League fan. In Australia, AFL (Australian Football) is the most popular of the football codes. Possibly the most popular of any sport here. But as far as football codes go, its AFL, then not far behind is Rugby League. 3rd is Football (Soccer) and then long down the line in 4th is Rugby Union. Union is just about dead in Australia.
a sport that isnt played anywhere in the world except in some weird head to head between two different sporting codes. I dont think there has ever been a competition created in either Australia or Irelend that plays by the 'agreed set of rules' I guess it does give great players in these localised sport to actually represent their own country if nothing else comes out of it.

Welcome to the world of AFL. I wouldn't pick a team until you've watched a few games, then choose your favo. My team, Hawthorn, is young and on the rise. Lots of energy and enthusiasm plus a playing style that is fast-paced and exciting to watch. Go Hawks!

There is nothing that can beat an awesome game of AFL Things can change so quickly even when all hope is lost. Individuals become legends, emotional trauma everywhere. It's the best.
Hahahaha nothing like some good ol' trauma. I read another comment describing how fast paced the action is - that's my biggest annoyance with what soccer has become (slowed down game) so I'm super excited to watch a match and feel that rollercoaster of emotions at some point 🤣
I read this when I woke up this morning and did a google search - you're right! It's been here since '97 😯 I'm thinking of attending a game and doing a little vlog at some point. Cheers!
Speccy bro lol great reaction much love from Byron Bay Australia 🇦🇺. I've played AFL since I was 11 and I'm still playing I'm 40 and it's the best game on earth.
Go for the Swans, best team in the AFL. Won the home and away last season by mile, but did lose the grand final. Have been in the finals most years won a couple of grannies and are hard to beat. Based in Sydney they have a special culture of their own and so.e brilliant players.
I recommend Geelong Cats as a team to follow, as I was born in Geelong and we've made the last 4 about 10 of the last 15 seasons. Including premierships in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2022. 3rd last season which was won by the Brisbane Lions. With regard to kicking the footy, while I'm sure you have a strong and fast leg, learning to kick the ball well with the various styles takes years to develop. We grew up playing it and have honed those skills over time.
Sounds like a quality team! Honestly the moment I said it I knew I was being big-headed haha. I'd still love to give it a try though - I'll video my attempts 😂
Melbourne are the first team founded in 1858 . We have recently won a flag (2021) and have the best Ruckman and some of the best midfielders . Great colours in Red and Blue.

There are many different ways to choose a team: Geographic, logo, mascot, colour combinations, history, club song etc. My father played in the South Australian League for the Bulldogs Central District and when he left the state he needed to pick a team in the AFL so he picked a name out of a hat and it was The Essendon bombers (black with a red sash) so I grew up as a Bomber supporter. When I introduced my wife to the game she was born in Sydney so she chose to support the Sydney Swans (white with a red v). I played, coached and was the president of a small local team called the Macleay Valley Eagles (blue and yellow) which my daughter and son played for. Looking forward to seeing who you choose because all of the teams have history, club culture and rivals. PS just don't be a Collingwood Magpies supporter (white and black stripes) as they suck.........lol (They are my team's rivals) Great reaction 👏

Thanks for the comment and that bit of history, I'll keep an eye out on the Bombers and Swans!

“Never Tear Us Apart” is an INXS song, which was adopted by Port Adelaide FC after their AFL club and state league team came together after years of bickering over administrative issues. Now at their home games they have a pre-game ritual with that song playing, it’s worth checking out a video of it.
Oh sweet! Liverpool fans sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" before every home game - there's some similarity there. Maybe Port Adelaide FC will be my team 😂 I'll check it out - thanks.

Aussie rules football was the most popular form of football in Transvaal, Natal and Cape from the 1880's to 1906. But lack of support from Australia and the success of the South Africa rugby union tour of Europe with the shift in interest Aussie rules died out there prior to the Union of South Africa.
rugby is basically played in 2 states where it is the sport of the people but the rest of Australia play our own game. So the MCG is probably the only place in the world where 2 sports 'originated' while Aussie Rules (AFL or footy) first was played there. And as you would probably know it was where the first test cricket match between Australia and England was played. Not to criticise you but you would know Rugby is always (in States) Queensland and New South Wales, yet you never wondered what was happening in the rest of sports mad Australia
The reason that person named North Melbourne is because we've had the worst 5 years of any team in memory. Like we've forgotten how to play the game. A number of ex Aussie rules footballers are in the American football leagues as punters as they know how to kick long and accurately. Aussie trainers are in the USA showing the Americans how to do that.
Australian Rules football I would say is bigger than rugby & soccer. AFl was what cricket players did over winter to keep fit. Players run about 12-15 kms per match. It takes a very different skill to kick the ball successfully. Brisbane Lions won the premiership last year.
@shmick6079 haha yeah I did! I should campaign to start a new league here in SA to use our cricket stadiums 😂 I think ours just gather dust in the off season 😅
@ if you’ve ever watched a cricket broadcast from an Australian network and wondered why we have wickets first on the scoreboard (ie 3/103), it’s because all the scoreboards at local ovals are used for both sports. The total score in Aussie rules is always biggest, so there’s more digits on the right hand side, so we’ve always put the wickets on the left.
@@IAM_SALEM I am irish and its kind of similar in that rugby is not as big domestically as one might think, its actually our fourth most popular sport behind Gaelic football(similar to aussie rules),Hurling(not curling) and soccer. The Irish team gets a great following so to the provinces but below that level its very sparse on the ground.Cricket hardly exists at all very much a minority sport.
The Brisbane Lions who won the flag in 2024 had to come back from being down on the table, down by 44 in the semi against GWS and down 25 to Geelong in the preliminary final. Essendons heart ache is quite resent......the result of using drugs to win and being caught. They are an original powerhouse club from the old VFA and one of the clubs that wanted to go professional and broke away from the amateur VFA to form the VFL in 1897. Aussie Rules was the first football code in the world to codefy rules and start a competitive competition, in 1856. Soccer followed a few years AFTER.
@IAM_SALEM the trophy is the premiership cup called the McClelland Trophy, but the team that wins is awarded a pennant as well - which we call the flag. It's a very old sport, so some of the terminology is not common today - pennants were symbols of championship. The winner will unfurl the flag, usually at their first home game of the following season, as a reminder that they are the reigning premiers.
Only 2 states in Australia really care about rugby. And Rugby League is the preferred rugby generally. AFL is the biggest football code in Victoria , SA , WA , Tasmania and NT.
Rugby is only big in the Eastern States of Australia, NSW and Queensland. The AFL and Cricket is huge in all of Australia. AFL is played on Cricket grounds since the 1850s
Not quite. Australian football is small in NSW and Queensland. Almost as small as the rugby codes in the other half of Australia. The two codes mirror each other in popularity.
You might be a good kick of the ball, but the field is really big, it's as wide as a soccer ground is long (or wider) so it's not just about accuracy but distance as well. It's all "line and length" my friend. That's why the goals are so big and you can miss but still get a consolation point, because they are really far away. The playing field is (about) 160 metres x 140 metres. (depending on the venue) With attempts on goal from 50 metres out, quite common (not ideal but common)
As soon as I said it I knew I was way over my head haha. Size of the field is insane - I'd still love a go though, would be interesting to feel the difference.
@@IAM_SALEM oh it's brilliant, we love it and consider it the world best/worst kept secret in sport. We know that most of the world would enjoy watching it. The season starts in March, pick yourself a team and get on board, all are welcome in the AFL. U can kick the ball on the ground like soccer altho not recommended because of its shape there’s no rule that says u must have it in ur hands altho probably impossible u can just kick it on the ground all way to the goals

What this video does not show is how HUGE and L-O-N-G the footy field/oval is ! Another video, 'What Is AFL ?' shows other sports areas, including English football, what Ausssie call as 'soccer', in comparison to that of Australian Rules Football. There is a very marked difference !
Just on kicking... kicking a round ball as opposed to an aussie rules football takes different skills... there is International games between Ireland and Australia playing a variation of Gaelic football which uses a round ball and often the Aussie players have difficulty kicking it straight. The same apples to soccer players attempting to kick an Aussie rules ball, the dynamics are different. No comment on your skill, just an observation for you to consider.
Trust me you'd be rubbish at kicking. Like every sport there are skills you have to learn. The ball is oval shaped and you have to drop it correctly or you'll look like an idiot.
They lie right from the outset by saying it’s not like any other sport in the world. It’s alike Gaelic Football. They are so similar that Ireland and Australia play a hybrid form called the “International Rules Series” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Rules_Series
If you read that article you'll see the games went from regular to occasional to nothing. The last game was 2017. I reckon the Irishmen weren't interested in being injured all the time. Hard tackling isn't part of their game.
Thanks for this - I read your comment this morning and actually read up on it. I'm thinking of driving out to watch a game and do a little video vlog of the experience!

A number of ex Aussie rules footballers are in the American football leagues as punters as they know how to kick long and accurately. Aussie trainers are in the USA showing the Americans how to do that.
8:20 watch an entire season first, then decide
CALCIO is the most insane sport i have ever seen
Australian Rules football I would say is bigger than rugby & soccer. AFl was what cricket players did over winter to keep fit. Players run about 12-15 kms per match. It takes a very different skill to kick the ball successfully. Brisbane Lions won the premiership last year.
There's that old origin myth. It usually springs up in these types of videos. Football was invented for footballers, not cricketers.
8:35 🤣🤣🤣 mate you couldnt have guessed any better they haven't won a finals game since the early 2000s
You thought rugby and cricket were most popular in Australia?
What do you think all our cricket ovals are used for in winter? 😜
@@shmick6079 I'm Australian and never put those things together. TIL.
@@psylenced pretty cool bit of trivia I reckon
@@IAM_SALEM I am irish and its kind of similar in that rugby is not as big domestically as one might think, its actually our fourth most popular sport behind Gaelic football(similar to aussie rules),Hurling(not curling) and soccer. The Irish team gets a great following so to the provinces but below that level its very sparse on the ground.Cricket hardly exists at all very much a minority sport.
Brisbane Lions 😊
The Brisbane Lions who won the flag in 2024 had to come back from being down on the table, down by 44 in the semi against GWS and down 25 to Geelong in the preliminary final. There are some great videos about their season but his one is the best: ruclips.net/video/vsPzRQgPgEI/видео.htmlsi=pI6vRVJVxmak2kno
I haven't clicked the link yet even though I so want to - would love to react to it - love me a come from behind story 😄
Collingwood, the most hated team, the BEST team......and joint highest premiership cups.... 16!
AFL is not like the Premier League with almost every team being successful at some point. Some clubs just aren't run as well.
1:51 yeah, nah - North Melbourne have just been playing crap since covid….
Haha unlucky! Who do you support?
@ …….North Melbourne…….
@ Oh man..........
Go for the Cats, mate. They have been competing for the flag since 2007 - ultra professional club that is never out of contention.
That seems to be the popular choice. So the trophy you play for is called the flag I'm assuming?
And a definite watch for AFL is how Port Adelaide nearly changed the AFL in 2014
🤔
The AFL also encourage a family atmosphere as far as attendance at the grounds, with many kids attending and a zero tolerance toward violence an anti-social behaviour.
Go LIONS !
There is another video called What is AFL Aussie Rules Explained which is worth watching.
Sydney Swans all the way 🦢🦢🦢❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍.
Brisbane Lions are my 2nd pick 🦁 🧡💜
You could support the Brisbane Lions.
U can kick the ball on the ground like soccer altho not recommended because of its shape there’s no rule that says u must have it in ur hands altho probably impossible u can just kick it on the ground all way to the goals
Choose the mighty Hawthorn Hawks, we're by far the most successful team of the last 60-odd years. Watch: top 50 goals of all time, top 50 marks (speccies) of all time, and highlights of the 2018 Grand Final. Best sport on the planet, and it 's all OURS.
Sydney swans is the probably the best to follow as they have made the finals for like the last 10yrs.
He just kicked it out because they won the game. The distance before a bounce is just "gut feel".
In terms of the MCG and "Never Tear Us Apart", there is a great video;
Liverpool F.C. & 95,000 Australian fans sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" FULL Dolby MCG July 24,2013

Please don't choose Collingwood. Please. For the love of god, man.
@@richber hahahaha - I'll take your advice. What has this team done??? 😧
Yeh maybe you could not play a game.the midfielder in any given game will run approx 15-17 klms in the game
Yup, with my lower back problems now that might be a bit too far for the old boy 😂
I was gonna suggest you support the eagles but if you are a Liverpool fan, we don't want you 😂
😂😂😂
CARLTON MIGHTY BLUES RARARA
What this video does not show is how HUGE and L-O-N-G the footy field/oval is ! Another video, 'What Is AFL ?' shows other sports areas, including English football, what Ausssie call as 'soccer', in comparison to that of Australian Rules Football. There is a very marked difference !
Support west coast eagles
Just on kicking... kicking a round ball as opposed to an aussie rules football takes different skills... there is International games between Ireland and Australia playing a variation of Gaelic football which uses a round ball and often the Aussie players have difficulty kicking it straight. The same apples to soccer players attempting to kick an Aussie rules ball, the dynamics are different. No comment on your skill, just an observation for you to consider.
Haha of course! I knew it as soon as I said it but one day I'd love to try 😁
Australia is a sporting nation but for those with very poor ball skills and no real sporting flair, we have rugby league.
Yeah mate. No offense but you definitely keep your ego in check when it comes to kicking!
@@nickrenshaw4733 😂😂 definitely. But I would love to try it out!
Carn the Tiges
The women's teams play harder than the mens
Women are a lot tougher!
Go for the Adelaide crows! they have the best rivalry and have some of the best games
I'll be sure to check them out
BTW "Never Tear Us Apart" is an INXS song adopted by the followers of Port Adelaide, whose team in the AFL is Port Power.
Trust me you'd be rubbish at kicking. Like every sport there are skills you have to learn. The ball is oval shaped and you have to drop it correctly or you'll look like an idiot.
Bro don’t bother learning this so called sport, ur best not hearing about. Ignore it, it’s a joke.
I feel like you should go for geelong...
Seems like the popular choice!
They lie right from the outset by saying it’s not like any other sport in the world.
It’s alike Gaelic Football.
They are so similar that Ireland and Australia play a hybrid form called the “International Rules Series”
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Rules_Series
If you read that article you'll see the games went from regular to occasional to nothing. The last game was 2017. I reckon the Irishmen weren't interested in being injured all the time. Hard tackling isn't part of their game.
Plus the ball is a different shape.
And the goals are a different shape.
@@Michael-D.-Williams The way rules in gaelic are changing its virtually international rules anyway
@@Joseph13163 Get back to me when they legalise tackling a person, rather than just smothering the ball.
AFL field is way bigger than a soccer field and a rugby field afl field is huge
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_South_Africa. You'll be surprised to know that Aussie Rules is played in South Africa
Thanks for this - I read your comment this morning and actually read up on it. I'm thinking of driving out to watch a game and do a little video vlog of the experience!
@IAM_SALEM Good idea I think it would be popular and South Africa's AFL would love the exposure and support I'm sure
